to be annoyed by being paid for work via a pocketmoney card?

Just want to see if I am being unreasonable here.

I've picked up a job as a Christmas Temp at Tesco this Winter, gave in my bank details as requested for being paid as per the letter contract.

However, in the post today, I've received a Tuxedo prepay card. Yes kids, the same thing you'd give your teenager. I will be paid through this pre-loaded card to save Tesco on their administrative fees.

Infantilising at best I know, however I could suck it up were it not for the fact that it will cost me money to use for bills, direct debits etc. etc. I know I can use it in the shops, but I feel like it's an extra burden on those of us who are picking up extra hours working in a shop. You know, just to pay bills.

What do you think? Has anyone else had this experience?

And for the record, no, the pocketmoney card was not mentioned at all in any of the recruitment gumpf, contract or anywhere outside a Google search which has yielded that Tesco are using it for their temp staff.

Money is old... it is being replaced by Data. Electronic payment systems can track your spending, it's that data which seems to be the new commodity which is so valuable. Very hard to track cash. Bad news though isn't it. If the computer says no we won't have cash to fall back on. I hope it never comes to pass but I'm afraid it will. Even the cash is turning plastic.

Thanks for the explanation as to how the finances work, waxy!

I like cold hard currency. It's there, in my hand and a lot harder for Mr Moneybags to snatch it away.

As for Blockchain - I've read that a whole bunch of Blockchain solutions are being heavily pushed by Accenture.

I'll never understand the government trying to eat "solutions" force fed it by the same corporate entities who screwed countries out of countless billions of taxes through technology and offshoring solutions.

On a sidenote, putting car taxes wholly online on a database seems to have resulted in a big increase of people dodging pay their car tax.

As a consequence, I imagine pushing people into having all of their money in electronic, paid-for format, may mean that people's uptake may dwindle. I know I would club together with my immediate family to pay for a bank account between us to circumvent charges if I absolutely had to.

Because we all know, once everything becomes paid-for by the consumer, the banks won't annually increase the fees right. Right?

And thank you helenadove for bumping this topic. Star

Although I am not a Housing Association tenant, I am absolutely impressed by your long-running thread highlighting the neglect and downright abusive treatment they / their contractors are subjecting people to. I am really worried for HA tenants' futures now the government seem to be planning to make them private entities.

That doesn’t explain why Tesco cannot pay BACS. Which actually would be cheaper because these cards are not produced as a result.
I would write to your MP OP

Iwantacampervan · 22/11/2017 09:58

'The Telegraph' newspaper is investigating this now.

Traffig · 22/11/2017 11:36

Good on you Hampton and Helena and others. I've been following this thread.
Disgusted at what has happened to you. Even more disgusted at the likes of USDAW who has not even attempted to recruit temporary workers or stand up for their rights.
It's a shabby weak union with a history of the FTO's looking out for themselves and sweetheart dealing .. in my valid and informed opinion etc.

Sending you good thoughts and hope the Telegraph runs with it, would be surprised but impressed!

PrincessFiorimonde · 22/11/2017 15:11

Very interesting thread. Glad you're well out of it, OP, and hope that Iwant's daughter (and other Tesco employees) also get this resolved.

HelenaDove · 22/11/2017 19:33

bump

BishopBrennansArse · 22/11/2017 19:37

USDAW were utterly toothless when we asked for support in a workplace issue when we were in retail. Shop steward sided with the store and did as they were told.

HelenaDove · 22/11/2017 19:40

Its funny how those on the trade union thread havent commented on this one despite the fact its been bumped quite a lot.

Iwantacampervan · 23/11/2017 13:39

I spoke with the journalist from 'The Telegraph' yesterday and have been told today by him that Tesco press office have offered to get things sorted for my daughter quickly. That would be good but what about everyone else and also, what's to stop them paying by these cards again?
Thank you hampton for starting this thread as it made me aware of the issues.

HelenaDove · 23/11/2017 13:46

Hmm Might pick up a copy of the Telegraph and skim through it to look at the adverts.

The press office is offering to sort your daughter's pay out, Iwantacampervan? Rather than HR or accounts?

My, that's going to be a very busy press office once your daughter tells all her colleagues they too can be properly paid if only they ask...

Tesco are an absolute disgrace!
Hopefully they will be hauled over the coals by the govt for blatantly lying and cheating people out of their true salary entitlements.

Glad it’ Been picked up - but wish the Mail or mass circulation newspapers would pick it up and run with it

HelenaDove · 25/11/2017 14:47

bump.

HelenaDove · 25/11/2017 23:51

this is very slowly starting to get more traction on Twitter tonight.

hamptonhangingpork · 26/11/2017 10:49

Thanks Helena.

I hate how Tesco are lying through their teeth, especially since Tuxedo boasts about issuing 30 cards a week and are used for seasonal workers. It's interesting how the red tops are avoiding mention of this or how people with bank accounts are being paid this way.

Really shows which way their bread is buttered trying to minimise Tesco's malfeasance.

Agree. They will probably be running even more adverts than usual due to the time of year.

Investigative journalism is dead. (apart from Jon Snow + Channel 4 news)

Have you spotted the new Tesco Chrismas tv ad. Donating turkeys to people in need.
