Ever since the story broke I have been transfixed. I don't know why. I don't know these people (I live overseas) but something about this case fascinated me.

Anyone else?

I’m glad it’s not just me encountering people in East London who still hark after the Krays and that life, I couldn’t believe it when I first moved here. (Walthamstow if anyone’s interested).

Dahlietta · 14/11/2017 12:15

I assume they are as they have clicked on the thread.

Well, I clicked to find out who Arthur Collins is! I recognised the case when I started reading, but I hadn't really registered his name.

Nothingrhymeswithfamily · 14/11/2017 12:18

Having lived within spitting distance of the essex / east london border. Its almost ingrained and part of its heritage. Ive certainly encountered a lot of wannabes around that area in my time.

discotits everyone local has a kray story mines too outing but its looked on as a golden time of chelsea smiles and cheeky chappy bank robbers.

HangingRock · 14/11/2017 12:23

I remember it saying in Viz comic
"They was the gentleman of murder. They'd shake your hand before they murdered you."

christmaspudding1 · 14/11/2017 15:16

Can't believe somebody has suggested a reality tv show, those shows are some of the problem, making out it's a glamouress live etc, gangster culture is out there no way do we want to encourage it

TheFirstMrsDV · 14/11/2017 15:26

Disco me too. I used to be one of about three MNers from E17.
Now there are loads.
Are you one of the new posh ones? Grin

That was what was reported back in October.....

DumbledoresPensieve · 14/11/2017 15:35

Someone mentioned the Krays upthread quite a bit. Not trying to derail but does anyone else not understand the fascination and glorification of them? They were two brutal, criminal thugs. Why all the films about them, the continued documentaries? I know people whose father was in their gang - he served his time before they were born. They are all proud of their notorious link, and when the last film came out were all over FB with pictures of them and their dad on the red carpet with the stars. Made me ragey!

NumberEightyOne · 14/11/2017 15:35

She's cashing in on the notoriety of her boyfriend.

I would be livid if I were one of his victims.

Discotits · 14/11/2017 15:41

I think so MrsDV! Blush Only been here 2 years! I’m not Village though...

MrsJayy · 14/11/2017 15:45

It is the infamy thing and of course theyloved their mum although I do like the kray film with the kemp brothers It didn't portray them as glam I have not seen the Tom Hardy film, I guess people are morbidly curious about crime

TheFirstMrsDV · 14/11/2017 15:53

Its ok, don't be embarrassed Disco. I don't discriminate. At least we have nice coffee shops now you lot have moved in Grin

Dumble I don't get it either. I love a bit of social history so enjoy documentaries about working class lives but hate all the glamourisation of two psychopathic drug dealing thugs.
They weren't criminal geniuses and they weren't working class heroes.

This whole area came to a standstill when the last one died. They are buried up the road. All these people paying 'respects'. The very same people who spend their days moaning about immigrants coming over here and robbing old ladies Hmm

You can't walk round here without tripping over some sad old fucker who claims to have been part of the firm back in the day.

Its pathetic.

Discotits · 14/11/2017 15:54

I’m in one now!

MrsJayy · 14/11/2017 15:57

I lold at tripping over sad old fuckers Blush

Nothingrhymeswithfamily · 14/11/2017 15:59

numbereighty
I don't think she is, she was a tv presenter before he did this. She's actually been off the tv since he did this.
Is she never allowed to work again because of this prick?

HangingRock · 14/11/2017 16:04

Mrsjayy. I liked the Kemp brothers film too. I liked that it focussed on how it affected the women. Not seen the Tom Hardy one either

MissionItsPossible · 14/11/2017 16:05

Not wanting to derail the thread but I think the fact that The Krays are beloved and celebrated as -salt of the earth- types and Jimmy Saville is reviled is crazy. Especially if you google his name with one of the twins names and do some digging.

NumberEightyOne · 14/11/2017 16:09

If you read the preview write-up it's clear that she'll be talking about how she's coped since the attack.
She 100% cashing in on it.

ihatethecold · 14/11/2017 16:10

The Tom Hardy film of the Krays was very good.
Not so much the subject but the acting.

ReggaetonLente · 14/11/2017 18:28

I think it's particularly galling to think that there are women all over the world who are forced into being in relationships with criminals and being complicit in crime - because it's the only way for their family to survive, because they're trapped in a cycle of violence and poverty, because they know that a chaotic, uncertain, even dangerous lifestyle is as good as it'll ever get for them.

And then you've got women like Ferne, who are wealthy, have had the luxury of finishing their education, who have the support of their families and who have power and influence in their own right, actually chasing that kind of lifestyle.

A girl I know from home was and is still in a relationship with a local drug dealer. She has two kids with him. She certainly has more material goods than I ever will - designer clothes, 5* holidays, new cars every six months (although DH recently told me that was to change the plates, and be less traceable, rather than for the fun of it). It's no life in my opinion though - they have two front doors for extra security, everything deadbolted, constantly looking over their shoulders not just for police but for rival dealers.

She doesn't deal drugs but she definitely knows what's going on, although I don't think in any great detail. I saw her a couple of years ago and she was reasonably open about it - no reason not to be as anyone local knew it anyway. She said her partner's view is the 15-20 years of the good life is worth the 10 years inside. If he even gets caught, which, of course, he doesn't think he will.

JustDanceAddict · 14/11/2017 18:47

I heard an interview this morning with one of the victims and felt terrible for her.
He pleaded innocent so the victims had to give evidence in court.
They said he might get a life sentence as the courts will treat acid crime as strictly as knife or gun crime now. It won’t be classed as gbh.
I think the fascination with these bad boys by Towie stars is just an extension of the ‘old’ east end bad boy obsession. I feel bad for Fearne if she didn’t know what he was like though. I’m sure I read an interview with her a while ago that she was ‘waiting’ for him to come out of prison.
