to think that nobody died from travelling backwards on a train?

Why do people make a fuss about this? The trains I travel on aren’t full, so I get to watch this pantomime of ninnies quite frequently.

Today I’m facing in the direction of travel at a table seat, empty seat beside me and two empty seats on the opposite side of the table. A couple get on, she sits opposite me and he insists I move my bag (the train is less than 50% occupied) so he can sit beside me.

I’m considering doing some man-spreading, even though I’m not one.

They paid for a seat. Your bag did not.

I get motion sickness if I travel facing backwards, so I always opt for a forward facing seat.

It's not that complicated, surely?

PandorasXbox · 09/11/2017 11:37

If it’s an attention seeking thing how do you explain babies and toddlers having motion sickness?

StormTreader · 09/11/2017 11:38

"I always pick ‘ forward facing ‘ because even though I’m not going to vom on your bag after 20 secs I’m going to feel rough. Probably a headache. ( not that I’d entertain wrestling an appt out of my GP practice to share that with them ) So I always always always pick ‘forward facing‘ and do they ever give me one????"

Do you pick other criteria as well? If you are also picking "quiet coach" or "table seat" then there are far less of those and it may be giving you those at the expense of the seat direction. Try just picking "forward facing" and see if you have more luck?

Butteredparsn1ps · 09/11/2017 11:40

I’m one of the attention seeking feckers.

I’ve been attention seeking on Trains and boats and planes.. (and buses and coaches and pedaloes). Ive even felt sick in the front row of the cinema without any actual motion at all.

And it’s not like my GP is busy or anything. Hmm
^Hello Buttered, what can I do for you today?
Well Dr-nothing-better-to-do, it’s about my travel sickness.
Ok and what brings it on?^
^Well Dr facing backwards or sitting towards the back of a car or coach seems worse
I see, and have you found anything that improves the situation?^
^Yes actually, facing forward and sitting at the front helps.
Why don’t you do that then?^

FWIW travel sickness tablets make me sleepy. Not good if I’m traveling for work.

JonSnowsWife · 09/11/2017 11:42

Both my DM and DCs can't travel backwards on the train as it makes them feel dizzy and sick.

I'm absolutely fine.

Also. Move your bloody bags off the chair. That's what the luggage racks are for, not seats!

Xeneth88 · 09/11/2017 11:43

My mum gets this, it's horrible! Sometimes it brings on a migraine to. Must be awful to pay for something, look forward to it and then feel rough all the way through. Sorry you get this, I hope you find a way to manage it.

Gromance02 · 09/11/2017 11:46

OP. Your bag's well-being is obviously more important than another human being feeling ill travelling backwards. I can't STAND people like you. I bet you have tonnes of friends!

spiney · 09/11/2017 11:47

Storm I think I’ve done that. .......It’s almost a curse. Very strange. The only option I havn’t tried is picking ‘backward facing’.

But I’ll probably just get ‘ backward facing’. 🙄

Evelyn I’ve got it. Why don’t you sit backward facing ...? That’ll see them off.

KalaLaka · 09/11/2017 11:51

op
Sit facing backwards and spread out all of your things. Easier than having to develop empathy.

Butteredparsn1ps · 09/11/2017 11:52

Xeneth88 it is a bit miserable, but luckily I’m fine if I sit far enough back. Lord of the rings was a very long film to sit through with my eyes closed though.

Your Mum has my sympathy

Hissy · 09/11/2017 11:53

When I used to use the tube, it was clear that a LOT of people, when seeing a bag sitting on a chair would INSIST on sitting there. If a bag is on a lap, or if the person made an attempt to move it when someone got on, chances are they'd have been left alone.

I can sit on a train going backwards, but not a taxi

Hissy · 09/11/2017 11:54

Simulator racing... that was a very immediate no go :(

Yup - trying to teach people basic manners.

SoupDragon · 09/11/2017 11:57

foodtime you really should indicate which part of your post is quoted and which is actually your opinion. It makes you look like you're contradicting yourself all the time otherwise!

NameChangeFamousFolk · 09/11/2017 12:02

Loving the poster whose bag needs a seat but finds people with a predisposition to travel sickness precious

Quite. Some particularly unpleasant posts/posters on this thread. It's one of those times when I genuinely wonder if people are THIS twattish in real life, or just save it for MN?

specialsubject · 09/11/2017 12:03

hopefully the bag has now been tipped over the Ops head. As pointed out, the bag didn't pay for a seat and so doesn't get one.

RhiannonOHara · 09/11/2017 12:03

I've been on a train where you could turn the seats round yourself, so you could sit as a one or two facing forward/the back of the seats in front, or turn them to make up a cosy four. Think it was in Japan.

Anyway, as has been said, some people get sick going backwards. And take your damn bag off the seat.

When I used to use the tube, it was clear that a LOT of people, when seeing a bag sitting on a chair would INSIST on sitting there. You may have seen me. Grin I make a point of politely asking to sit next to inconsiderate twunts people who put their bags on the seat next to them.

spiney · 09/11/2017 12:04

“Is that your bag?”
“Could you move your bag”
“Do you mind if I sit there?”
“Would you mind moving your bag.”

Ffs just move it.

Clandestino · 09/11/2017 12:06

I can't travel backwards. I always get sick, bus or train or whatever. Backwards means my co-passengers are looking at what I ate for breakfast.

Gromance02 · 09/11/2017 12:07

Bags shouldn't be on seats in the first place. God some people are thick.

SilverSpot · 09/11/2017 12:07

Well everyone knows babies and toddlers are the absolute WORST for attention seeking behavior!

God what a lot of drama queens. Some people might have mild motion sickness moving backwards, but it’s mostly attention seeking

Yet another person because they dont suffer from something doesnt believe how it effects other people, does your "medical training" - and because of your manner and lack of empathy I would really doubt you are actually a GP except I know a GP who sounds very similar to you, a complete arrogant individual who should never be in a job which involves human beings - provide you with psychic powers to see into peoples minds? Hmm

justforthisthread101 · 09/11/2017 12:12

So I'm not the only Pendelino sufferer! Good God they're terrible for it. I'm not great backwards on any mode of transport but in cars (remember the pop up rearfacing seats in the boot in old estate cars? Fastest way to make me sick) and those trains and I'm awful.

But, for those suggesting medication. I'm evangelical these days about Sea Bands. They are amazing. They have totally changed travel for me and DD1. When DD1 had a sickness bug recently I also put them on and it relieved the nausea amazingly well. DH's jaw was on the floor as we literally watched the colour come back into her cheeks.

Oh and YABVU OP. As I've spent the last 40 years trying to explain to my mother, we're not making this up. And yes mother, (and DH), it's substantially worse when either of you are driving!!

Tippz · 09/11/2017 12:15

I am always amused by at people who are incensed when people ask them to move their bags off a seat on a train or bus. Did you buy an extra ticket for you bags? No you fucking didn't. You bags are not entitled to a seat. I HATE travelling backwards on a train, and it makes me feel queasy. If I HAVE to I will (OBVIOUSLY) but I prefer not to.

I am certainly not going to travel backwards when a front facing seat is available, but just has some entitled-to arsehole's bags on it. If they refuse to shift them, I WILL remove them myself.

Anyone who says 'I don't get queasy in a car or facing backwards on a train, therefore no-one else possibly can' is a fucking asshole. Hmm

@RebeccasSlicker

I read somewhere a theory that it's to do with your inner ear getting confused by the scenery whizzing past in the wrong direction - no idea if that's total bollocks but I do tend to feel better if I close my eyes and put music on.

Pretty much it yeah; it's the disorientation that makes people feel queasy. Pretty obvious really!

@hotbutteredcrumpetsandtoast

No, its just that it doesn't make sense. Someone gets travel sick in the back of the car but is just fine in the front, where they coincidentally get more space, more leg room, don't have to sit next to anyone....aye, pull the other leg, its got bells on. There's no reason why you'd puke in the back but not a foot further forward in the front.

Don't talk such shit. It's got fuckall to do with 'having more room in the back!' Who the hell do you think you are? Calling people LIARS who say they feel sick facing backwards on a train, or in the back of the car? For fuck's sake! You have NO idea how every individual person feels, so stop chatting fucking shite! Hmm

Re the post by @Xeneth - I also laugh out loud at the people on here pretending to be doctors and suchlike. Yeah right......... Grin

I have one question for the naysayers; why the FUCK would people make this up? I bet you tell people with depression to just cheer up as well eh? And people who struggle with their weight, to just 'eat less.' Hmm

Loving the poster whose bag needs a seat but finds people with a predisposition to travel sickness precious..

This ^ What kind of entitled-to asshole demands a seat for their fucking BAGS?!
