AIBU to be annoyed by open train windows

stressedinsurrey · 08/11/2017 19:49

Today it’s 5 degrees outside and someone just got on my uncrowded train carriage and threw open several windows and it’s now freezing. Yesterday someone got on who looked like they had run or cycled to the station (sweaty) and politely asked if I would mind if she opened the window (a window that would blow directly in my face). She gave me daggers when I said I’d rather she didn’t. Less annoyed by the polite person of course but she did make me feel I was BU. If it was crowded or hot I’d understand it, but it’s 5 degrees! I’m wearing a coat, scarf and gloves as it is! AIBU?

I would have asked very politely if they could shut them if it was cold. I don't find trains stuffy in the least

PandorasXbox · 09/11/2017 09:13

Even without finding trains too hot sometimes, I can’t think of anything worse than being cooped up with lots of people without a bit of fresh air.

formerbabe · 09/11/2017 09:17

Closed windows on trains are horrid. You need the air, otherwise it just feels like warm, festering germs!

I'd rather keep my coat on.

RatOnnaStick · 09/11/2017 09:17

Thank god I don't use trains very much. I'm a windows open person and my husband is always chilly so we can see both sides of the argument.

I always open the bedroom windows for a bit in the early morning but it doesn't stop us having the heating on for everyone downstairs having breakfast. I think there's room for both.

DenPerry · 09/11/2017 09:27

I think we all have to compromise.. if only a few windows are open then still the majority are closed. People should be wrapped up for this weather Wink

Temperature is the whole reason a huge rift was caused between me/DP and FIL (straw that broke the camels back..) We went away together in January and he wanted all the radiators on full and fireplace on full all day as he is always cold, and I was heavily pregnant and boiling so my DP went to turn the fire down by 1 bar and FIL went nuts. I had to spend most of the time there stood outside in the frost. MIL ending up throwing a duvet on him! Selfish prick.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/11/2017 09:32

YABU. Other people smell and fresh air is a good thing.

HellonHeels · 09/11/2017 09:37

I vote for fresh air.

Tainbri · 09/11/2017 09:39

Sorry, I back the YABU. Put more clothes on and get fresh air. Trains are disgusting and germ infested.

ginghamstarfish · 09/11/2017 09:42

OP if you're dressed for outside then why is it a problem to have the outside air coming in the window? Not being goady but I really don't get it. Always wonder this in shops etc too in winter - (which I find unbearably hot) - everywhere is heated to tropical temperatures for the shop staff in their short sleeves, but customers happily stroll around togged up to the eyeballs ... how can people not then be too hot in a heated space?

TieGrr · 09/11/2017 10:04

On trains, I often feel faint if I have to stand so the windows being open help a lot.

In work, I usually feel the cold so I have a blanket cape on the back of my chair. I prefer the windows being open because fresh air stops the office getting stuffy and smelly.

disahsterdahling · 09/11/2017 10:06

Gosh lucky you having windows you can open.

Our trains have all had their windows blocked up so you can't open them.

I have more sympathy with people who get hot than cold. If you get cold you can put something else on. If you are hot, you can't really strip off in public (unless you work in a swimming pool, maybe :) ).

maddiemookins16mum · 09/11/2017 10:08

YANBU, I am usually the last person left in my carriage by the final stop, I end up closing all the windows about 20 minutes before I get there, it's like a howling gale through the carriage otherwise.

Liiinoo · 09/11/2017 10:12

I travel on Southern where we are packed in like sardines and the combination of body heat and train heat can be overpowering. I would love it if more windows were open.

RavingRoo · 09/11/2017 11:06

Windows (or aircon) should be permanently open (on) on trains. If you’re too cold then it’s just tough really.

Candlelight234 · 09/11/2017 12:59

I get the windows open if I can, commuter trains in the NW are damp, stuffy & smelly. I also give daggers to anyone who looks like they may ask to close them. Fresh air is better than arm pit smell.

Julie8008 · 09/11/2017 18:08

If its cold you can put a jacket on to warm up. If its warm you cant strip naked to cool down. So its better to have it cold with the windows open, as that enables everybody to be comfortable.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 09/11/2017 18:40

I’d just open them again, explaining that I felt unwell.

And I'd shut them again, perhaps with my own sob story. We could go the entire train journey like this if you wanted Grin

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 09/11/2017 18:46

Yabu I hate feeling claustrophobic and in enclosed spaces without an open window or the facility to open one and have been known to have a panic attack because of this

bluebells1 · 09/11/2017 18:50

YABU. Fresh air is way better that the recycled stale air in the train. I always open a window. Also, people smell. Opening the window makes the stench bearable.

Chattymummyhere · 09/11/2017 18:55

Yabu.

Fresh air is good for a start and it’s easier to warm up then cool down. I can’t shower without the window open otherwise I will faint from the heat. Buses and trains are unbearable with the windows closed I go though the stages first I will lose all hearing then feel sick then I will either throw up or faint. No telling which one as sometimes the feeling disappears then one of the two will just happen. Unless I can cool down fast enough.

Spangles1963 · 09/11/2017 18:59

Why do people who feel the cold always think that everything has to be adjusted to suit them? My pet hate is on buses, when the moment the outside temperature drops below 20 degrees Celsius (yes really) you get a plague of window slammers. They get on the bus and within seconds it's SLAM! A bloke got on the bus a couple of nights ago and went around slamming shut no less than 6 windows,5 of which were nowhere near where he was sitting. Including the one above me. I wasn't really bothered whether it was open or closed, but it bugged me that he hadn't asked me,or anyone else, whether they minded him shutting the window. So I waited until he'd settled himself down and opened it again. His face was a picture. Honestly,I've come to the conclusion that some people just can't bear the feeling of air on their skin. Because it's inevitably the ones who are dressed for summer in short sleeved T-shirts with no coat that go around sealing up any possible means of fresh air getting in.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 09/11/2017 19:07

YANBU nothing worse than feeling too cold. I'll always shut them as my body temperature drops too quickly and makes me ill. I'm wearing a coat, gloves and a scarf.. No frigging chance am I going to have freezing air blasting in my face.

PandorasXbox · 09/11/2017 19:07

Wouldn’t expect anything else from you WhatToDoAboutThis2017 Wink

Lethaldrizzle · 09/11/2017 19:08

Every time a door opens it let's the fresh air in! And I had no idea trains were so germ ridden - its not something I've ever thought about

SpiritedLondon · 09/11/2017 19:08

There really isn't a right or wrong in this case though is there? It's not as if you're feeling the temperature correctly and other people who prefer it hotter or colder are somehow incorrect or deviant. My DH runs very hot and becomes very sweaty at the drop of a hat ( shirt sticking to his back etc ). He is clearly not in a position to remove much in the way of clothing when he's wearing a suit for work but you could presumably carry more layers to stick on if you feel the cold. So sorry but YABU.
