Priti Patel

Could someone please explain the situation?

Priti Patel travelled to Israel (apparently whilst on a family holiday) to hold meetings with the Israeli government. She didn't tell anyone one apart from Boris Johnson about this, so no one else knew anything about it.

She then commissioned policy in the Dept of international development on the back of these meetings.

Clearly, it's a massive conflict of interest. I get that.

But why did she do it? What's in it for her? Do you think she got paid really well for it by the Israeli government? And why did she not think that the shit would hit the fan if/when other people in government and the general public find out about it?

No, she asked if DfID funds could be given directly to the Israeli army to help their 'efforts' in the Syrian refugee camps wonder if they treat Syrian refugees with the same compassion as the Palestians whose land they're occupying?Shock
She's a member of the conservative friends of Israel, as is my own MP (his wife is an American Israeli British national).
No-one in their right minds should go on holiday to Israel. Should be viewed as akin to holidaying in South Africa at the height of aparteid.

Ceto · 08/11/2017 20:03

It simply isn't credible that all those people in Israel gave up their time to meeting her unless she had given them very good reason to believe she had authority to speak on the government's behalf.

HadronCollider · 08/11/2017 20:07

Teresa May should have sacked her. The woman is looking weaker by the day. She should have taken this opportunity to flex her muscles. That is assuming she didn't know anything.

roundaboutthetown · 08/11/2017 20:08

There is nothing transparent or open about anyone in this government - I reckon all the pro-Brexiteers are at this sort of behaviour or encouraging it, as they try to find ways to ensure, behind the scenes, that any deals that are stitched up with other countries are in the favour of themselves and their cronies. Their wealth and political power first, country second, and pay bugger all interest in the reaction of other countries when they find out, because they aren't diplomats, they're self-serving politicians.

roundaboutthetown · 08/11/2017 20:10

And I don't for a minute think all MPs are corrupt, cynical and stupid - I've just lost faith in anyone in the cabinet.

roundaboutthetown · 08/11/2017 20:15

As for letting Priti Patel resign instead of sacking her - why?! Theresa May now either looks weak or in on it.

OnionShite · 08/11/2017 20:21

All read this, it's hilarious.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/nov/08/rip-her-mentions-priti-patel-flies-back-into-perfect-social-media-storm

Honestly though, what was she thinking?! This was all so very avoidable. Ok she's pro-Israel, she wants to strengthen her links to Israel so she can build a support base there for when she goes for the leadership- fine. There are ways to do that without secretly meeting Benjamin bloody Netenyahu then lying about it when someone inevitably notices!

jobhunting1 · 08/11/2017 20:38

Was gutted that she was my local MP again. She’s an awful woman, not remotely impressed with anything she has ever done. The only people I know who voted for her did so because she was Tory, not because they rated her

ForalltheSaints · 08/11/2017 20:52

Whether she was any good or not, Boris Johnson should have gone before her. If he became PM I would advocate a military takeover as that would be a better option.

PricklyBall · 08/11/2017 21:39

@OnionShite The Graun's parliamentary sketch is pretty funny too!

Capricorn76 · 08/11/2017 22:04

What Boris has done this week is worse. They're hoping we can't follow two scandals at once.

ZooeyAndFranny · 08/11/2017 22:25

Her wiki page cannot be amended to prevent vandalism right now.

Tapandgo · 08/11/2017 23:01

She is gone. Great. Now can the rest of the Tories go too please?

Viviennemary · 08/11/2017 23:11

Boris is simply awful. What a gaffe about the woman being held in Iran. And May is clinging on by a thread. Can't see either of them being here this time next year. But that Leadsom (sp?) woman is worse than either of them. Not her please.

RoseWhiteTips · 08/11/2017 23:32

May should have had the guts to sack her.

mumisnotmyname · 08/11/2017 23:35

Yes she should, she looks weaker than ever

The80sweregreat · 09/11/2017 07:45

New type of word for disgraced cabinet members ‘ sackination’ - for PMs who can’t quite have the guts to fire somebody properly and with vigor. She’s still Withams mp and will be well paid for that. TM will struggle on as the Tories will want us to believe its all fine.

roundaboutthetown · 09/11/2017 07:49

And as for Boris Johnson... the man is appalling in just about every way. He's a liar, a philanderer, he plays silly political games without any apparent understanding of the huge and negative impact this can have on millions of lives, he's too bloody inane to even say the right thing about one single person in prison in Iran. He is toxic. Why so many people have claimed he is intelligent, I don't know. Manipulative and untrustworthy, yes, cunning at most, but any intelligence he has serves no-one but himself.

PerkingFaintly · 09/11/2017 08:15

Couldn't agree more about Boris, roundaboutthetown.

saoirse31 · 09/11/2017 08:51

Yeah its hard to see how Boris has any support left after this week.

areyoubeingserviced · 09/11/2017 12:41

Have never liked Priti Patel. She reminds of individuals at school and university who loved the sound of their own voices and believed that they were intelligent , but were in fact inefficient and just downright stupid.
Boris Johnson is and has always been an idiot. His popularity is definitely waning

Ceto · 09/11/2017 16:03

May has got herself into an utterly stupid situation with Boris: she daren't sack him, because when the inevitable Brexit disaster happens, he'll be out there claiming that it would all have been wonderful if only she'd kept him in the cabinet. Also, I strongly suspect, he actually makes her position slightly more secure - for now - because no-one wants her to go if it means being stuck with Boris.

Of course, she could get rid of the problem by ditching the whole Brexit fiasco, but she's not brave enough to do that, either.

OnionShite · 09/11/2017 19:45

Good point re Boris. I always thought that's why she made him FS in the first place. Make sure he gets thoroughly covered in the shit he helped cause.

HadronCollider · 09/11/2017 21:38

Agree with everything you said Ceto. May should just stick to her ethics and step out and drop brexit, even if it will make her ultimately unpopular, but she hasn't got the courage.

eddiemairswife · 09/11/2017 22:10

With reference to Boris Johnson, does anyone know where the idea of Nazarin teaching newspaper studies came from? Was it made up by Boris?
