Priti Patel

Could someone please explain the situation?

Priti Patel travelled to Israel (apparently whilst on a family holiday) to hold meetings with the Israeli government. She didn't tell anyone one apart from Boris Johnson about this, so no one else knew anything about it.

She then commissioned policy in the Dept of international development on the back of these meetings.

Clearly, it's a massive conflict of interest. I get that.

But why did she do it? What's in it for her? Do you think she got paid really well for it by the Israeli government? And why did she not think that the shit would hit the fan if/when other people in government and the general public find out about it?

OP posts:

I don't like her very much I'm afraid. Seems very shallow and has a mighty high opinion of herself. Didn't realise she had told Boris. I thought nobody knew. I read she is after Teresa May's job. Well she's had it now I expect. Spitting image would have been good. And there was another one similar not too long ago. Can't remember what it was called though.

HadronCollider · 08/11/2017 19:17

Would she really have taken this action without the sanction of Boris? She's surely not that stupid. I mean what deals could she possibly guarantee without reliable authority? Someone made a point that you meet your counterpart ie, someone who holds equivalent office, not the Prime MInister. Yet she gets access to Netanyahu, who what? Clears his schedule for her? Either she's taking the fall for someone or she's incredibly stupid. There's been no proof of the latter before now.

It all stinks. Someone had to know she was meeting them. There were a lot of meetings.

OllyBJolly · 08/11/2017 19:18

According to Twitter, a respected journalist says No 10 did know

Ah - she has resigned

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 08/11/2017 19:20

PrivateParkin

Haha! I wonder if the daily fail are hiring Grin

TheSpottedZebra · 08/11/2017 19:21

I used to work with her. She was beyond useless. Didn't think anything through.
I'm amazed she got this far to be honest.

The80sweregreat · 08/11/2017 19:21

I cbba to read it all ( or even really understand it all ) but its not good.

milliemolliemou · 08/11/2017 19:23

I think we'll find out all the details later on.

The accusation against her is that she went on holiday to Israel and while there held several high level meetings without a ministerial secretary to record them, including in areas the UK doesn't recognise as belonging to Israel and with no official brief.

She allegedly fessed up to Teresa May and was suitably carpetted. Since then it appears there were other meetings to which she hadn't admitted. Hence the call back from her trip to Kenya.

There have been rumours that TM may have known about some and possibly BoJo. As the Jewish Chronicle alleges.

She seems to have been a capable minister with ambition.

BriechonCheese · 08/11/2017 19:26

I wonder how much sweat Boris is wiping away from his brow right now?

Muddlingalongalone · 08/11/2017 19:27

Not sad to see her go tbh. I used to have to switch her off radio 4. I think she used let me be clear about 400 times in 1 interview without actually saying anything of substance which irritated me tremendously.
Can't imagine what she was thinking- but suspect both her and Bojo in the same week is distraction tactics either from sex scandal or brexit.

UmmKultum · 08/11/2017 19:29

It’s a bit ott. It was obviously not smart and against protocol but it’s not like she was doing it for personal gain. Not sure her head had to roll for it.

PerkingFaintly · 08/11/2017 19:30

Capable minister? Don't think so.

I've never, ever heard any good of Patel. She one of those people where every single time she's come to my attention she's been making a spectacle of herself as ill-informed, misanthropic or self-serving.

IIRC, someone on MN went to school with her and said Patel would sell her granny if she thought it would win her the tiniest bit of political advancement.

KateAdiesEarrings · 08/11/2017 19:33

'It's not like she was doing it for personal gain.'
You think she was acting out of the goodness of her heart? Hmm
She tried to divert DfID funds as a direct result of her secret meetings.

With the way the Tories are politicising aid and Boris putting British nationals overseas at risk, there'll soon be no viable aid programmes at all. Who is going to risk going overseas when Boris can put your life at risk and then refuse to apologise? If he had a smidgeon of integrity, he'd resign.

squoosh · 08/11/2017 19:34

I used to work with her. She was beyond useless. Didn't think anything through.

Seems to be the general consensus. It's amazing she got as far as she did.

Good riddance to her. Now, about Boris Johnson...

RockyBayEve · 08/11/2017 19:35

My guess is that war is brewing between Saudi and Iran.

Saudi is on board with Israel on this as they both hate Iran and vice versa ie the enemy of my enemy is my friend type of thing.

Boris has been on board with the axis against Iran, Russia, Syria.

He sends Patel over as a secret envoy.

Patel is exposed gets taken down and shortly after Boris has to fall on his sword.

Two less leavers in the cabinet.
Victory for remainers in cabinet.

UmmKultum · 08/11/2017 19:37

She tried to divert dfid funds to help fund Israeli humanitarian activity on the border with Syria. Not smart, israel is rich enough to fund its own limited humanitarian engagement but not like it was going to go into her own pocket or family or friends.

Oblomov17 · 08/11/2017 19:37

She resigned. But one man on the ITV news said, she’s a bright politician and she’ll be back.
Really? She made a serious judgement of error. The transparency. So many other factors. This is really bad.

But she’ll be back soon? Really? I wouldn’t vote for her.

UmmKultum · 08/11/2017 19:38

I wouldn’t vote for her because she’s a euro skeptic and I don’t like her politics. This was an error of judgement but I don’t think it should have been sackable

CoolCarrie · 08/11/2017 19:41

We need Spitting Image so much now!

TheSpottedZebra · 08/11/2017 19:48

(When I worked with her), Priti had absolutely no issues with telling bare - faced lies, even when you and she both knew they were lies. Her first instinct seemed to be just to lie to make her life a teeny bit easier.

PerkingFaintly · 08/11/2017 19:49

From the Buzzfeed primer, which is well worth clicking on for more links and, erm, laughs...

Last week BBC News reported that international development secretary Priti Patel had held some meetings while on holiday in Israel – without telling the Foreign Office first.

The story described how Patel had been on a family holiday in August when she met a senior politician and visited some organisations to discuss government business.

Oh, and she was accompanied by Lord Polak, honorary president of Conservative Friends of Israel, a lobbying group with access to wealthy party donors.

Then the Guardian rang her up. She told them that, actually, foreign secretary Boris Johnson had known all about it.

"Boris knew about the visit," Patel said. "The point is that the Foreign Office did know about this, Boris knew about [the trip]. It is not on, it is not on at all.

"I went out there, I paid for it. And there is nothing else to this. It is quite extraordinary. It is for the Foreign Office to go away and explain themselves."

Tensions have been strained between the Foreign Office and the Department for International Development after Johnson appeared to call for Patel's department to be absorbed into his own. She told BuzzFeed News last month: "DFID is an independent department."

But it wasn't until Monday that it all kicked off – when her department issued what could be the one of the greatest press releases of all time.

First there was the mea culpa statement from Patel, in which she admitted: "In hindsight, I can see how my enthusiasm to engage in this way could be mis-read, and how meetings were set up and reported in a way which did not accord with the usual procedures. I am sorry for this and I apologise for it."

Then there was the list of TWELVE separate meetings and engagements she had undertaken on the trip – including with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu.

The list also includes Yair Lapid, the leader of Israel's Yesh Atid party and Yuval Rotem from the Israeli Foreign Ministry. (Bear in mind this was a family holiday.)

And finally – a "clarification" of her comments to the Guardian, in which a poor press officer had to write: "This quote may have given the impression..."

This quote – "Boris knew about the visit. The point is that the Foreign Office did know about this, Boris knew about [the trip]." – was commendably clarified like so:

"This quote may have given the impression that the Secretary of State had informed the Foreign Secretary about the visit in advance. The Secretary of State would like to take this opportunity to clarify that this was not the case. The Foreign Secretary did become aware of the visit, but not in advance of it."

It all seemed...somewhat unfortunate.

Meanwhile reporters were asking Number 10 when exactly the prime minister had found out about these meetings. It was Friday, apparently, when the first report came out.

Which is awkward because Netanyahu had visited Theresa May in Downing Street the day before.

A Number 10 spokesman said on Monday: "The prime minister welcomes the secretary of state's clarification about her trip to Israel and has accepted her apology for her handling of the matter.

"The prime minister has met with the secretary of state this morning to remind her of the obligations which exist under the ministerial code."

He added: "The prime minister thinks she's doing a good job."

And it got even more awkward.

And then it turned out that after her trip, Patel had asked her officials to look at giving some British aid to the Israeli army.

Her deputy, Alistair Burt, confirmed this in the House of Commons on Tuesday, adding: "The department’s view is that aid to the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] in the Golan Heights is not appropriate, we don’t do that, and that was the advice given to the secretary of state."

But why was Burt dragged to the Commons? Why not Patel herself? Well, she had hopped on a plane to Uganda.

Patel happened to be starting a three-day official visit to Africa on Tuesday. But it didn't last long.

The Sun reported on Wednesday that she had admitted to two more secret meetings in September – with Israeli minister for public security Gilad Erdan for talks in London and Israel’s Foreign Ministry boss Yuval Rotem while in New York.

There were also reports that she had visited the Golan Heights.

So the PM summoned Patel back to London – and journalists everywhere started tracking her flight back.

Remember this is happening in the context of a cabinet at war with itself and with various ministers recently sacked, facing the sack, or under investigation.

(And spare a thought for this reporter, who flew all the way to Uganda for an interview with Patel and has now been stood up. We had a chat with her.)

It's not just Patel who has been facing questions. The Jewish Chronicle claimed on Wednesday that, in fact, Number 10 knew all about her meetings – even though it had been telling journalists it knew nothing until last Friday.

This complicates matters further, and they are further complicated by the fact Number 10 says the story is untrue.

A Number 10 spokesperson told BuzzFeed News: "It's not true that the Prime Minister knew about the International Development Secretary's meeting wth Prime Minister Netanyahu, before Friday 3rd November.

They went on: "It's equally untrue to say that Number 10 asked DFID to remove any meetings from the list they published this week."

NumberEightyOne · 08/11/2017 19:54

She wants the PM's job.
She supported the Israelis and they in turn described her as a 'friend of Israel.'
When she made her move for the top job the Israelis would throw money behind her in support of her campaign.
That's my take on it. A simple quid pro quo.

PricklyBall · 08/11/2017 19:56

Wow, just... wow. Perking, that is fascinating.

engineersthumb · 08/11/2017 19:58

Definitely in Israels pocket and just as likley playing schoolboy politics to massage her ego.

roundaboutthetown · 08/11/2017 19:59

What a surprise - they are all corrupt, cynical and stupid.

PerkingFaintly · 08/11/2017 20:02

roundaboutthetown, I wouldn't describe all MPs as "corrupt, cynical and stupid", as I've been made to think twice about that sort stereotyping since the murder of Jo Cox.

But Priti Patel gets a special mention on her own personal merits...
