My partner's father texted me the following today: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Grandma and Grandad

It is my birthday. It is not my child's birthday. It is not any of their other grandchildren's birthdays. They don't even like me and have made it clear by saying 'you are not part of our family' out loud, to my face.

I am very tempted to send a snarky reply but (a) I shouldn't rock the boat as we have news to give them at the weekend they won't like and - much much more importantly - (b) I can't think of anything good. All I've got is:
'I didn't know you were a medium, X. Could you please tell nan and granddad thanks and that we did spend the money on beer, as they'd have wanted' (my nan and granddad are dead and I miss them, X is a teetotaler...)

(Light hearted in case that isn't obvious!)

Agree with Saucy that you're wasting precious birthday time on this. If they're doing it to annoy you, best reaction is not to give them what they're looking for. I assume your partner has given them stick for saying they don't like you? If not, get him on the case.

Just say thanks then get on with your birthday OP.

Okay it could have been a mistake - I know I'm being charitable BUT I once signed a card to one of my DC with my full professional signature not "Mum".

Maybe you and DP need to discuss just how much contact you are going to have with them going forward and what is best for you and the DC? (The DC don't need to know their Grandparents think they shouldn't have been born - and small pitchers have big ears.)

Hope general relations with your in-laws are improved in whatever ways are necessary and doable.

(Failing that, and if they refuse to meet you halfway, concentrate on your DP and kids, and engage minimally as to be the civil adult..their choice as to whether they still exclude you from their family, and remain rude to your face, but unwise of them because it'll impact on their Grandchildren).

Just ignore the text as you’ve said. Time will tell if it’s a wind up or an olive branch If it’s the former, it’ll annoy them that you didn’t bite because you’re stealing their opportunity to be outraged at taking offence and it’s the latter, you are being gracious and avoiding any outrage.
