Thought this might be fun. Grin I'll start.

I'm a property owner - of a derelict, empty bedsit (inherited) with smashed in windows, so much mould that it looks like the walls have been spray painted black and even the squatters don't go near it.

I'm a business owner - of a failing tiny business which barely brings in enough money to buy a food shop every week, and I'm in debt up to my eyeballs.

I live in a detached four bedroomed house in an affluent and desirable area - in a council house. Grin

I own three cars - all of which are old bangers worth a couple of hundred each, and two of them don't work at all, but I don't have the energy to get rid of them.

I have a massive flat screen TV, the latest iPhone and my children have all of the latest gadgets - mostly all on finance from Brighthouse or put on the Argos card I can't afford to pay off.

I have a wardrobe full of designer clothes - from Oxfam.

I own 61 pairs of shoes - from Primark.

I have regular holidays abroad - camping in Europe, paid for by Sun £9 holidays.

I have a university education - in a pointless subject sociology that I've never used.

I drink champagne regularly - from Aldi. Grin

Pretty sure you aren’t allowed to be a property owner and rent a council property?

Are you actually a bit dense? Hmm

BarbaraOcumbungles · 07/11/2017 19:17

it pays peanuts. (apologies if that offends anyone with allergies)

Grin. Look at what we have become!

GiantGapingAxeWound · 07/11/2017 19:18

I'm not ON benefits. I already said I'm a business owner! I got this house before I started my failing business as I'm a poor single mother with multiple children. Judge me!

I don't really get it...you are actually privileged though OP Confused

GiantGapingAxeWound · 07/11/2017 19:19

I didn't ask to be given that shithole! I never wanted it, but he left it to me in his will. I know nothing about property

OP posts:
Elendon · 07/11/2017 19:20

I'm privileged in that I have a loving family and great friends. I never feel alone.

StepCatsmother · 07/11/2017 19:23

I thought this would be a thread about how you can look to the outside world like you're 'privileged' (insofar as privilege is defined by material wealth) but the reality can be very different from that, and a lesson in not judging people by outward appearances.

Elzee · 07/11/2017 19:23

I don't get it OP sorry...... Confused

PortiaCastis · 07/11/2017 19:25

I'm very privileged because dd and myself are safe and away from her violent arse of a father so we are safe and very lucky even though we don't have much and my shoes are from primani

JonnaSilvie · 07/11/2017 19:27

I'm privileged because my lovely mum, on having me, taught herself to read so that she could read to me, too, and take me to the library. I'm privileged because, despite her own past failings, my mum taught me to love education.

Slimthistime · 07/11/2017 19:28

OP, get informed, sell property, pay some debts. Someone will buy it!

GiantGapingAxeWound · 07/11/2017 19:28

Step Exactly! That's what it was meant to be Smile

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 07/11/2017 19:30

Could you keep your 122 shoes in the bedsit and charge entry for the public to marvel at the shoe mountain?

ShimmeringBollox · 07/11/2017 19:32

Do you have a goat op, because I can't actually be discustard unless you have a goat.

rightknockered · 07/11/2017 19:33

I'm privileged because I got myself an education when it was still free, and had a maintenance grant, and even rent rebates on bedsits/houseshares.
I have 5 fabulous and loving children, I know people who can't have children. I have fantastic friends. I got away from my narc ex, so my life improved beyond measure.
I'm extremely happy most of the time

StarlightMcKenzee · 07/11/2017 19:33

This is an excellent video to demonstrate privilege if interested?

Cookiesandcake · 07/11/2017 19:35

I'm privileged in the fact that I have a lovely family husband and toddler. I'm underprivileged in the sense that we live in a tiny 1 bed flat and have no money. We live in an absolute nightmare of a flat truly horrendous and we can't get the £500 deposit together to move somewhere even semi decent for our little boy, I don't even have the money to buy him wellies for winter. Christ sell your flat even if just for a couple of grand and pay your debts off. If I had assets I'd be selling them like a flash to try and improve our situation. I've even sold any clothes I don't wear for a couple of quid. I'm down to a jumper, 2 pairs of jeans 2 pairs of leggings and 4 tops. Oh and 1 pair of summer shoes no winter shoes. Please don't try and insinuate your skint. If you're not selling your gadgets and spare flat and cars then your not skint, it's a bit insulting

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 07/11/2017 19:35

Your kids are not privileged because you buy them the latest gadgets on credit which you can't afford to repay Confused

DaisyRaine90 · 07/11/2017 19:36

Thanks for your honesty that’s how most of us live but it appears we are affluent because of credit ratings 😂

Laiste · 07/11/2017 19:36

No benefits? Isn't a council house a benefit?

Could you use the twenty grand to get a mortgage or start a part buy?

whattobeexpected · 07/11/2017 19:37

Well Well weeeeell O.P

To ask how 'privalledged' are you?
Slimthistime · 07/11/2017 19:37

Still makes no sense

I probably look like I have nothing because I don't own "stuff" or look posh or eat out much etc but I've got enough saved to start working for myself next year and hopefully to retire early

I'm not white and I'm female though so in that respect, not privileged

I tend to look at people with a lot of stuff and think they have a huge credit card bill tbh

Isn't Brighthouse one of the worst places to buy?

Laiste · 07/11/2017 19:38

I'd say everyone able to post on this thread is privileged as they have access to the internet and are able to afford a device to do it on.

elfycat · 07/11/2017 19:39

I'm privileged:

because my parents who left school with no qualifications valued our educational opportunities and encouraged us to go as far as we wanted to (degree level, all of us).

because I live in a country where I have access to health care including preventative care. Water is clean, H&S love or hate it is a concern, emergency help is available if things go wrong.

because I am white, because I have a 'good' regional accent so speak very well, because through lucky genetics I am fairly attractive.

because we are reasonably financially secure.
