I spend about £70 - £100 each. They're 8 & 10. But from what I've seen at Christmas time -on facebook- eek other parents spend hundreds.

OP posts:

My DCs might get a little more this year, but I will be spending about the same amount. This is because I am working at a toy store and get a 30% discount on all our stock Shock

SisyphusHadItEasy · 07/11/2017 16:10

Oops, sorry about the double post

MrsPringles · 07/11/2017 16:14

Around £150 for my 3yr old DS.

I buy a lot of things in the sale. DS’s main present is a Bosch Toolbench from ELC, it was reduced from £75 to £35 so was pleased with that Smile

JaceLancs · 07/11/2017 16:20

My DC are adults - budget is £150 each same for DP then I allow another £300 for other family and friends total £750
I ebay to fund it - any extra I make goes toward cost of food etc then any left over I can treat myself in sales - so far doing well with quite a few weeks to go!

CheeseAndBeans · 07/11/2017 16:27

About £75 this year on DDs, 1 and 4. They will have 4 gifts from us under the tree, one from Santa plus stockings. They get a ton of stuff from grandparents etc. Wouldn't feel bad about spending less if we didn't have the money (only one income as I am a sahp so things are right), and if we did have loads of disposable income I would probably spend more. Everyone is different, hate all the competitiveness on fb etc!

Paddingtonthebear · 07/11/2017 16:30

About £100. DD has just turned 5.
We have bought a few things already. Vtech kidi star thing she is desperate for, was £27 on Amazon this week instead of £50. A mermaid blanket, some stickers, a lockable my little pony diary. Will probably get her some books, pants and socks and some little stocking fillers.

Iwanttobe8stoneagain · 07/11/2017 16:37

dS 5 will get about £300-400 loads of play mobile stuff , a bike, some games all quickly adds up. We only have the one to spend on so we can afford to get home more

Christinayangstwistedsista · 07/11/2017 16:51

We spend a lot at Christmas but we dont post it all over face book

geekone · 07/11/2017 16:57

Our DS 7 knows not to be greedy when asking santa for gifts, but as it's santa the cost is unimportant to him. This year he has asked for a Nintendo switch and game but he has said that is all he is asking for as it is a big present. I will use Tesco vouchers for it but I would have bought it for him anyway. He will also get books and pjs from FC. However I also buy a gift normally an experience from both DH and i last year a concert this year Premier match tickets.

geekone · 07/11/2017 16:58

I actually don't know how anyone keeps it under 100 when they get past a certain age one computer game and a pair of football boots and budgets are blown

HamishBamish · 07/11/2017 16:59

About £100 from us. They do however get a lot bought for them during the year. We wouldn't wait for Christmas or a birthday to buy them a new bike for instance. DS2 has recently started ski racing and has needed a lot of equipment for that.

BBTHREE76 · 07/11/2017 16:59

There is no fixed budget as such. Best estimate is about £500 each Xmas on DD and DS, made up of one big thing (previously iPad, PS4 etc) and £100 - £150 ish of smaller presents. (Both teens so seems to cost more for less). This year neither teen has asked for a big present so I estimate it's about £150 - £200 each on medium/small presents. I never discuss present values in RL, as I know we all have different budgets and some may frown on how much we spend. We both work full time though and save all year, and my kids never get regular treats through the year so we go a bit OTT on birthdays and Christmas.

If people have only got £100 to spend, they’ve only got £100 to spend. Regardless of what it gets.
I’m sure there a lot of children who would be very happy with a computer game and a pair of football boots.

youarenotkiddingme · 07/11/2017 17:04

I don't have a budget as such tbh!

Obviously I ah e an upper limit (e.g. I only buy what I can afford) but I've never set a budget.

Some years I've spent £50 and £10 on stocking and others £150 and £30 on stocking.

I tend to see what ds wants and needs and go from there!

This year he's had a massive growth spurt and so I've bought him lots of clothes (he's 13). His birthday is august so would have spent the money anyway as he needs clothes (iyswim?) so better to bulk up xmas stuff imo. I've also bought him a new onesie and dressing down as his is halfway up his forarms Blush

However I've spent very little on toys etc and have just got him some add ons for his nerf guns. I'll probably get some dvds or something as well.

I've bought him a winter coat and new school bag but they weren't for xmas as he's needed them now!

For his birthday he got an urban scooter which was £50. Other years I've spent £20 and others £100.

geekone · 07/11/2017 17:05

Sorry Blush I didn't mean it like that I meant things are so expensive a pair of football boots and a computer game don't seem like much but are a lot of money and if you only have £100 your budget could be easily blown. Sorry Blush

doze931 · 07/11/2017 17:06

Finished my boys this year and spent £330 each. Went over budget Shock
They have got a 2ds xl, game and case which takes up a large chunk which is why we are so over budget. They asked for a nerf gun, board game and fidget sponner

HighwayDragon1 · 07/11/2017 17:07

This year, around £500/550.

Does it really matter?

reetgood · 07/11/2017 17:08

We do asking for gifts in our family. When I was a teenager I’d pitch it around £50, now we’re grown ups and they’ve got their disposable income back the value has increased. I am clearly out of touch. My Christmas budget for family (grown ups) is £30 per person, and up to £50 for boyfriend. Pregnant with first child. Suspect he’s going to have a similar budget!

KindnessCostsNothing · 07/11/2017 17:11

My budget has varied from £6-150 depending on what they want or need and what my circumstances are at the time.

The year ds wanted a PS4 he got it as joint birthday and Christmas from us and extended family.

Throughout the year I buy them maybe 2 books and whatever clothes and shoes they need. Clothes they want go on birthday or Christmas lists, poor ds with his December birthday has a long year without getting stuff.

Christmas usually looks like:
Stocking
Main present
Small present
Some books

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 07/11/2017 17:15

Usually between £150-£200. This year ds2 has requested an Xbox so it'll probably be a bit more.

DonkeyPunch88 · 07/11/2017 17:27

I spend about 30-40 quid on the three older ones and the baby will probably just get a couple of small toys.

Mammylamb · 07/11/2017 17:29

Ds is 2 years old. Spent about £70 on him which is more than I initially thought I would. But most of it is stuff I'd have bought him anyway (pjs, socks etc)

rackelle · 07/11/2017 17:34

DSD (8) has a handmade advent “calendar” where I buy lots of little gifts to open through advent, the gifts range from 50p to £6 so it can cost £50-£60 just for this. She doesn’t need masses more and her mum always goes mad anyway, so we spend probably Max £60-80 on actual Christmas Day gifts but we always put a lot of thought into what we get her.
DS will be 7 months and we know the family will want to spoil him so we’ve got him 3 toys! Can’t see the point buying loads as he already has so many toys it just seems wasteful!

HoobleDooble · 07/11/2017 17:41

My DS has his birthday and Christmas in the same week, so we usually spend between £200-300 then split it into 2 piles. He’ll be 9 this time so hasn’t got to the stage of asking for really expensive stuff, so we’re making the most of it while we can. I see the ridiculous photos of huge wrapped piles of presents on FB and wonder how much of it the kids will actually be interested in, DS gets nothing like that amount, but there’s usually a few bits from relatives that he’s just not bothered about, which I put to one side and re-gift to his friends as birthday presents throughout the year.

ProfessorCat · 07/11/2017 17:46

I agree it definitely gets more expensive the older they get. DD is 9 now and last year had an Xbox One, this year the Nintendo Switch (she's very into games) and next year no doubt it'll be whatever new tech is out then. She had an iPad for her birthday. We do sell old tech to part fund the new though, the Wii went to get the Wii u, the Xbox 360 went for the Xbox one and the 3DS has funded part of the switch. It was far cheaper when she was a toddler!
