How much do you spend on dc's at Christmas?

I spend about £70 - £100 each. They're 8 & 10. But from what I've seen at Christmas time -on facebook- eek other parents spend hundreds.

I say £250 each but in reality will go over for dc1+2 (8&9) and under for dc3+4 (4&1)

Dc1 is having an xbox one which is going to be around £200, Ive already spent over £50 on clothes so his £250 is definitely not happening!

juddyrockingcloggs · 07/11/2017 10:47

I have one son and he has about £500-£600 pounds.

I never compare what he gets to what other people spend as it’s all personal choice but I never take pictures of his stocking and put it on Facebook, that’s just not classy!

littlepinkgiraffe · 07/11/2017 10:48

We have a habit of massively overspending but can't really afford to do it. This year I've massively reined it in. We have gone from spending £100 on our nieces and nephews in recent years to spending about £10 on them each this year.

We've spent £75 on DD but I've got a lot of that from charity shops (jigsaws and games etc). I've finished for her now so need to not let myself grab anything else!

ItalianWiking84 · 07/11/2017 10:49

Around 100£ each.

Pagwatch · 07/11/2017 10:50

It depends on what they want.

I wish people wouldn't be arses bout what other people spend.

If you are a parent who spends all year telling your child they can't have stuff, who is aware that your child is often the one who misses out on holidays, trip, nice clothes, phones etc then the desire to splash out at Christmas must be hard to resist. We wrap Christmas up as a day of joy and miracles and love.

It's easy as fuck to say 'I spend £60 max' if your child will be opening their Christmas presents whilst wearing hollister pyjamas, still tanned from the half term trip to Sorrento and before sitting down to your organic turkey.

The excessive spending is madness but maybe consider what sometimes drives the need to do it. You know, 'goodwill to all men' and all that shit.

dramallamakarma · 07/11/2017 10:50

DC1 I’ve spent about £120 so far on quite a few small things & about done, she doesn’t need anything ‘big’ as she had a bike for her birthday.

DC2 is still a baby so I’m thinking £40-£60 including some clothes he needs.

Redhead17 · 07/11/2017 10:53

I don't actually know the cost. I buy all year so I never add up.

Probably £300-£500 each have 2 children. Both got a laptop this year plus a lot of other bits. I buy in sales etc

formerbabe · 07/11/2017 10:56

Probably between £50-70 per child on their main presents.

Stocking fillers probably add up to £50 each...lots of bits and bobs, but I buy them over a few months so don't notice the cost so much.

I'm always Shock at the present mountains under Christmas trees. I like it to look like a decent amount of stuff but I find the extreme gift buying rather nauseating. Not to mention, who wants mountains of tat all over their house?!

louise5754 · 07/11/2017 10:57

Posters that buy things in the sale / use points. Is the item you're getting what the dc wants or do you just get it because it's cheap / a bargain?

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/11/2017 10:58

Dd is 9. She does a lot of costly activities in the year. We spend around £150 on her. I think it was actually less than that last year.

I don't do a set budget, just a list of gifts I think they would like, I also don't worry about making it exactly equal, there is a 5.5 year age gap so they have very different interests.

missadasmith · 07/11/2017 11:03

£20-30 per child (7 and 10 years old). but then DC1 is disabled, I had to leave work and now I am on Carers Allowance. I cannot afford more but hearing how much others can afford always makes me feel a really inadequate parent Sad

Kpo58 · 07/11/2017 11:04

DD got about £30 spent on her last Christmas. She was 1 and didn't really need anything. She'll probably get about the same spent on her this year, but the amount will most likely increase when she gets older.

Cockmagic · 07/11/2017 11:05

missadasmith - you sound amazing and certainly not inadequate!

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 07/11/2017 11:05

miss inadequate my ass!

If they're anything like mine, they won't even remember the gifts they got last year- a house full of love and fun is priceless!

Ginorchoc · 07/11/2017 11:07

Louise is that for me, I tend to stick to the want, need thingy. No point getting bargains if it’s crap/unwanted as that’ll mean that they are not actually bargains...

Ecureuil · 07/11/2017 11:08

I don’t have a budget but if I added it up it would probably be about £150 per child (I have two DD’s).

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 07/11/2017 11:10

I only have 1 DC so I don’t need to do the whole even thing but it honestly depends on what I’m buying and how much use she will get from it. She’s 1.5yrs so doesn’t care how much I spend. This year I’m getting her a little shop so needs till and food to stock it so that’ll just be how much it costs. She’ll get years worth of use out of it. I think I’ll probably average about £75 in the future but who knows.
I don’t really look at the money side. If it’s a bit on the low side I’m not bothered as she gets things through the year

ShoppingBasket · 07/11/2017 11:10

Used to be about 150 but now he is getting older it probably has crept up to 200, especially as he wants lego sets this year :(

Even if I could afford more I don't think I would go over 200 because there is only so much toys a child can play with. One year it happened that it was all 10€/20€ stuff he wanted. I topped up with other toys and half it went unused and I learnt a lesson!

CbeebiesAddict · 07/11/2017 11:11

£70 for main presents and £30 for stocking presents for DS 21 months. At this age it is really easy to stick to budget and still have big presents they will enjoy. Am aware I will need to increase budget for the teenage years Grin

Fairyflaps · 07/11/2017 11:11

About £30 each + random stuff in their stockings - sweets, socks, pens, charger cables. The DCs have more spent on them on their birthdays, but not much more unless it is something very special or a big birthday.

We have a large extended family and would rather get (or make) something small for several people.

WitchesHatRim · 07/11/2017 11:12

@missadasmith please don't feel inadequate.

These threads, just like FB can bring out PA boasting.

You are in no way an inadequate DM

missadasmith · 07/11/2017 11:12

cock, thanks. It is still crap if your DC really wants something that costs £100+ and you know you have no way of getting this, not even 2nd hand.

Commuterface · 07/11/2017 11:13

My two DDs have their birthdays in Nov and Dec (bad planning)! I'm not spending more than £150 on each of them for Christmas incl stockings. I've just got a load of stuff in the Argos 3for2. DDs are 6 and 4.

I also can't stand the FB showing off on birthdays and Christmas!
