How much do you spend on dc's at Christmas?

I spend about £70 - £100 each. They're 8 & 10. But from what I've seen at Christmas time -on facebook- eek other parents spend hundreds.

DD will be 18 months, about £500.

puffyisgood · 07/11/2017 22:01

I'm aghast at some of the obscene sums being bandied around on here, srsly.

speakout · 07/11/2017 22:08

OK so maybe I don't live in the real world.

I don't know teenagers without gadgets. Of all my teenagers' friends, not a single one without a games console or some device.

And these are kids from a local state school, many on low income or benefits.

speakout · 07/11/2017 22:09

So lobster your DD gets £200 from her grandparents.

Mine don't. so they can't save up like your DD can.

limon · 07/11/2017 22:11

Somewhere around £100. Some stuff off ebay (second hand Slvanian Families).

Lobsterquadrille2 · 07/11/2017 22:13

I only bought a television when DD was eight - not a financial issue, we just don't really watch it and neither of us have ever been interested in games/gadgets. We read a lot and do lots of outside stuff. I don't think we're that weird because none of DDs friends at school ever had gadget type stuff apart from phones and laptops.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 07/11/2017 22:15

speakout no, she gets £100 per year from her paternal grandparents - her birthday is close to Christmas so it's a joint gift. But yes, I agree, she's had the opportunity to save that £100 a year (my parents would never give cash).

CurlsandCurves · 07/11/2017 22:18

Mine have had the most they’ve ever had spent on them this year. Because after several cheap tablets that have turned out to be a false economy, they’ve had iPads.

Both had them for their birthdays over the summer and know that they were birthday and Christmas presents combined.

Obviously I want them to have some nice things to open on the day, but I’m aiming to make that £50 each.

Runninglateeveryday · 07/11/2017 22:22

When DD was a baby till 10/11 between £30-80 and more with every year since then 😬. She's only ever asks for clothes/trainers etc so at least it saves throughout the year!

Bouncingbelle · 07/11/2017 22:22

Just seen a young girl online asking for how to get a budgetting loan to buy more presents (after listing more than enough she had already bought) for her ONE year old. I don't get that. I've spent about £100 on my 1 year old - a personalised toybox to 'keep', 2 toys, some books and some clothes. Just making the most of it before he gets older and has a xmas list as long as his arm!

speakout · 07/11/2017 22:23

We are a gadget loving family.

I don't even know how many laptops we have in the home, 3 PCs, half a dozen tablets, 4 iphones, and other devices like Kindles etc. We have wired network connections too.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 07/11/2017 22:26

I have a Kindle 😀

EvilCleverDog · 07/11/2017 22:28

Usually between £200-£400 each dc (12/14)(depending on what I’ve saved) but this year I’m on maternity leave and haven’t saved much so I’ll just split what I have saved between them, with a few bits for the baby.

speakout · 07/11/2017 22:29

Each to their own lobster. It's the way we work in this family.
Technology is fairly important to us.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 07/11/2017 22:32

speakout totally agree (each to their own). I'm at a PC at least eight hours a day with work, often a lot more, so it's the last thing I want to do at home.

babycakes101 · 07/11/2017 22:36

Depends, my dd1 has asked for an iphone8 so that’s £900 but I’d feel mean just giving that so I’m buying some cheap stocking fillers so far dd2 list of what I plan to buy is at £700. I know this sounds a lot however they don’t get any pocket money throughout the year and not often given too many treats so we do spoil them at Christmas. However we make sure they are always grateful and they haven’t turned out to be brats

littlemissdemon · 07/11/2017 22:40

This will get some hate however it’s not unknown for me too spend around £3000 between my 3 children. They are not spoilt brats for it, they have lovely manners and understand they are extremely lucky.

Though I will agree, it bugs me pictures on fb of piles of tat, and don’t do this.

littlemissdemon · 07/11/2017 22:45

Also a good portion of that £3000 was surprise uni stuff for eldest dd

Why does the amount of money people choose to spend on their kids at Christmas offend your moral principles ??

No one should give a shit what anyone else chooses to spend/buy/give/not give and that’s part of the problem....

Not read all the replies, but I really don't care how much other people spend on their children at Christmas.
It's not about money, surely?! It's about spending time together, exchanging presents, not who's spent how much.

PumpkinSquash · 08/11/2017 01:43

You'd feel mean only giving a £900 Iphone and want to buy more stuff on top?! Bloody hell.

HamSandWitches · 08/11/2017 01:56

300 each then their stockings but I save up all year, teens now usually get half of it as cash and the youngest gets toys and 50 cash, friends spend more or less the same, some do 500 per child.

PumpkinSquash · 08/11/2017 02:06

I was thinking about getting toddler d's a phone. He likes games on it and it might help with speech.

So get one of those Vtech type phones/laptops/speaking computer gadgets at toddler age.No way do they need a phone! Who yer gonna call? Yer mam?!
