Soon-to-be DH and I are getting married in September 2018. Current honeymoon ideas are;

Iceland (hot springs!)
Rome, Rhodes and Amalfi
Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius
Maldives (might be too expensive!)

We love culture, history, and sight seeing, want to relax a bit, but worried about getting bored somewhere isolated and beautiful.

Where did you go on your honeymoon? Help us with some more ideas please Smile

Budget fairly flexible, around £2,500

Rebeccaslicker thank you! I don't know if we'd feel comfortable asking guests to contribute to our honeymoon, I suspect possibly not.

Lots of ideas flying around here, thank you everyone! Keep them coming Smile

Cyprus. It’s the birthplace of Aphrodite the goddess of love, so lots of really romantic things to do.

As you say you’re into culture, there’s loads of Greek historical sites to explore, or you can go to the Northern part for a different feel.

There’s also day trips to Egypt for the Pyramids.

Great weather, and on budget.

peachypetite · 04/11/2017 14:30

We got married in September and went to Japan. Sounds like exactly what you are looking for!

RoseRuby26 · 04/11/2017 14:31

Can't believe there is someone who disliked lake garda. We LOVED it. So beautiful and so much to do in terms of breathtaking views, water sports, visiting historical towns topped off with wonderful weather and food. We stayed in 3 different towns: riva, garda and limone. Cheap flights. Bus transport means it's more reasonable.

RoseRuby26 · 04/11/2017 14:32

We also went to Japan and loved it but I'd go closer to home on your budget so you save money on flights.

greendale17 · 04/11/2017 14:33

I wouldn’t recommend Italy at all- expensive, got ripped off in restaurants and bars and people were rude

alphajuliet123 · 04/11/2017 14:36

A friend recently did the French Riviera, Monaco and Barcelona on the same trip. They flew into France and back from Spain and got trains in between. Photos were amazing!

Barcelona is fantastic, historical and interesting, love a city by the sea, so much to see and do. Or you could combine it with somewhere like Seville or the Balearics.

TeamRick · 04/11/2017 14:37

We did Sorrento for our honeymoon!

Went to Pompeii on the train, did a boat trip out to Capri! It was fabulous I loved it!

pinkmagic1 · 04/11/2017 14:40

Marrakech is amazing. Interesting culture and lots to see and do. There are some fabulous hotels too, where you can truly have the best of both worlds.

Loctite · 04/11/2017 14:44

I think that might be me RoseRuby Grin Although I didn't say I disliked it, just that out of all the places we have been in Italy it was not my favourite! We had a nice time there and had a car to saw quite a bit of it etc.

I just preferred Tuscany, that's all!

I REALLY want to travel down the Amalfi Coast so that is on our list of places..

RoseRuby26 · 04/11/2017 15:04

Tuscany is on my list to visit so that makes me excited!! Love Italy Smile

peachypetite · 04/11/2017 15:06

Our flights to Japan were really cheap - booked far in advance.

Loctite · 04/11/2017 15:07

RubyRose you will LOVE it! So many impossibly gorgeous places and incredible food and wine. I would live there if I could Smile

Dashper · 04/11/2017 15:32

We went walking in the Austrian alps for our honeymoon with a few days in Munich at the end. All our travel was by train. It was lovely taking the time to get there in a relaxed way.
I'd love to go to Rome for my 40th birthday though.

Bratsandtwats · 04/11/2017 15:34

We really fancy a trip to Vienna. Maybe next year.

Bratsandtwats · 04/11/2017 15:35

Also a mini cruise around the med. Small tasters of lots of places plus tonnes of food and drink thrown in.

disahsterdahling · 04/11/2017 15:43

We went to Italy. It was lovely.

Long haul sounds nice but a wedding is quite tiring and we were quite relieved not to have more than 2 hours' flight.

We did consider a road trip around New England, but I think Italy was the right choice (this was late September/early October).

Iceland might be little bit more expensive than 2.5k

We just did Tuscany + Cinque Terre and spent around that.

Nyc I love it , been twice and can’t wait to go again but again maybe little bit more expensive than 2.5k

We did west coast 2 years ago and was around 2.5k each.

For our honeymoon In sept 2016 we went to Thailand , spent more than expected but that’s cuz we did loads of internal flights and chose nice expensive hotels. I think it was less than 2k each what we spent.

I normally plan everything by myself never used a travel agent so always choose nice expensive activities within our budget that if we had used an agent would have been paid in commission.

Flev · 04/11/2017 16:57

Like @TeamRick, we went to Sorrento for our honeymoon. It meant we got to pompeii, herculaneum and mount Vesuvius, plus the Amalfi coast and Sorrento town itself. Would definitely recommend it - and the train links up to pompeii, herculaneum and Naples are good so no need to drive.

RubyRed2017 · 04/11/2017 18:15

If you want culture, from that list it has to be Italy
I’d go multi centre and do Florence, Rome and Pompeii /Herculaneum. Book hotels with pools for chill out days.
I’d also suggest Spain-Granada, Sevilla, Córdoba. Hot, good food, lots to see.
Iceland is great but unless you want to do lots of outdoorsy stuff then only good for a few days. And £££. I spent £1000 on a long weekend for one person, including food and excusions.
Maldives-ok if you just want beach and diving. Also £££.

Nomorechickens · 04/11/2017 18:25

A week in Sorrento. Touristy but attractive, plenty of restaurants. Local train to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Naples, ferry to Capri, bus to Ravello. Absolutely don't think of driving! Then maybe 5 days or more in Rome. Or a relaxing week in Puglia, stay in a trullo. Or a week in the Cinque Terre.
Or just 2 weeks in Sicily.

maddiemookins16mum · 04/11/2017 18:31

We went to New York.
However I can say that Croatia offers a lot of what you are looking for and some of the smaller islands will give you peace and quiet if you wanted to do a sort if two centre affair.

PidgeonSpray · 04/11/2017 18:46

We went to st Lucia for ours. But fromyou have said I would definitely recommend Sorrento, amalfi coast , Pompeii, Capri etc

We've done that a few times and LOVE it. I want to retire on the amalfi coats . It's so beautiful.

Don't bother with time (unless its.only a few days to do the essential sights) the food is awful.

Thoroughly recommend Sicily also
