Also known as gribbles. Best thing ever.

LordNibbler · 03/11/2017 22:00

I now live in Exeter. The locals call them gribbles. I just cannot ask for them with a straight face.

CappuccinoCake · 03/11/2017 22:00

Never heard of them here either! If everyone asks for t he m do they do bits especially to become scraps? Are they free?

Paperclipmover · 03/11/2017 22:00

Wow. I'm going to ask for them next time I go to the chippy. I don't see how I can have missed them. I'm a Londoner , are you lot keeping them from us?

How do you eat them? Scooping up with fingers, or with a spoon?

CarrieBlue · 03/11/2017 22:02

They make them, not just bits fallen off fish. I don’t think I’ve ever been charged extra for them. I love them!!

isthismummy · 03/11/2017 22:02

I moved to London from Durham in 2011 and was horrified to find they aren't a thing here!

The first thing I do when I go home is visit the chippy for my fish and chips with scraps onGrin

Theresnonamesleft · 03/11/2017 22:02

One day I am going to raise enough cash to bring scraps to London. That's the one and the only thing I miss from up North.

ssd · 03/11/2017 22:03

I used to work in a chippy....I missed my chance there Sad

We call them bits here ( Yorkshire)
Not keen myself

Paperclipmover · 03/11/2017 22:05

Ok. I need these. Just so I know exactly what I'm asking my posh local chippy to provide, let's get this straight...

Scraps are batter, chip shops make extra batter, they pour this batter into the fryer, this is scraps. Yes?

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 03/11/2017 22:06

Am from Yorkshire and we had scraps!! Grin Wee bits of fried batter - I haven't had them for over 30 years - God they were lovely!!

Ollivander84 · 03/11/2017 22:08

Last time I was in the chip shop drunk at 2am I asked for scraps to go with my classy sausage, chips and curry sauce
The entire queue went "oooooooh scraps! Not had them in years!" And then ordered them Grin

HamSandWitches · 03/11/2017 22:09

I work in a chippie, when southerners come in and I ask if they want batter they look at you blank so I say scraps, still don't know what I mean so I point to it and they mostly say no.

Seems to be NE batter
Midlands/yorkshire scraps
Down South I'm not sure they do it

Buns as well get called all sorts, I say bun but some people ask for a roll, a balm (sp)?, roll, a bap.

Do battered Mars bars as well, some places do battered oreos

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 03/11/2017 22:10

I've worked out what is missing from my life now. Scraps!!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 03/11/2017 22:11

Oh I'm in Essex too. I've been missing out.

HamSandWitches · 03/11/2017 22:11
  • a roll, a balm (sp)? or a bap.
BikeRunSki · 03/11/2017 22:11

We call them bits here ( Yorkshire)

There us even a chippy not far from me called “Wibits” (With Bits).

Paperclipmover · 03/11/2017 22:12

One day I am going to raise enough cash to bring scraps to London.

I think this could be your get rich quick scheme nonames. Can I be your gang? We'll borrow a fiver off a Dragon for some flour and get started selling them on Brick Lane.

marywinchester · 03/11/2017 22:12

they've always been called scribbles here in my bit of north devon. haven't had them in years but might have to find a chippy tomorrow tea time.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 03/11/2017 22:12

I love the bits here in the Black Country. They're the best bit!

Longdistance · 03/11/2017 22:13

Mil introduced me to scraps. She had them as a child, down south. They seemed to go out of favour down here, as I certainly haven’t had them until she moved up north.

My dds like them.

Ollivander84 · 03/11/2017 22:14

Ham - barm up here!
When I went to uni the canteen staff gave up asking and went "just point at what you want"
This was after a heated argument about a "bacon tea cake" and fruit/no fruit/size of bread roll

scottishdiem · 03/11/2017 22:14

I think it is to do with the type of batter mix. I used to work in a chip shop in Scotland and we didnt have scraps to actually sell. Or perhaps it was how we put the fish in the oil?

Creambun2 · 03/11/2017 22:15

And people wonder why the UK has high rates of heart disease.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 03/11/2017 22:16

Definitely bits in Yorkshire.

And barm cakes
