I've just done such a stupid thing!

I've name changed, as this level of stupidity cannot be connected to me 😜.

I've spent around 16 hours over the past three days on a very complicated cross stitch. I've just noticed that I had the bloody canvas turned portrait instead of landscape! Arrrrgggggghhhhh!!! I'm going to have to unpick everything I've done so far 😩😩😭😭.

Can somebody please say something to make me feel better about my fuck-up? So I can know I'm not alone? Please...

DH thought the electrics had gone in the bit of the car that controlled my window which had got stuck down. Spent a week with a bin bag over the opening going everywhere very slowly and wearing lots of jumpers. When he finally got it to the garage, very polite engineer said Sir have you tried pressing the Window Lock button again? Which window lock button says DH? Ah.... that window lock button on the drivers door right by your elbow.

BreakfastAtStephanies · 03/11/2017 21:42

Well done doing all that unpicking OP. It's a beautiful picture and will all be worth it in the end.

I recently did a cross stitch silver wedding card and started it too far up the canvas. There was just enough border to mount it in the card but it was close. I cut loads of Aida off the bottom ! No way was I unpicking it, I didn't have time. The recipients were going away on holiday for the anniversary so it had to be finished and sent a week before I thought I would have to.

pickleypockley · 03/11/2017 21:45

I called out the gas board once because we had an awful smell of gas in the garage and seeping into the house (the garage it attached) for weeks. His machine didn’t find a gas leek but he admitted there was a bad smell. After he had gone I had a good look round and found some chicken breasts that hadn’t made it into the freezer.

Creamswirls · 03/11/2017 21:46

That is so beautiful! How easy is it to do? Could a novice do that scene? Or is cross stitch very complicated??

Copperkettles · 03/11/2017 21:51

The naked lady is gorgeous. Could you pm me the pattern for that? (The link to where i can buy it I mean)

ChevalierTialys · 03/11/2017 21:59

Oh balls, I hate it when this happens. I was about 2 thirds of the way through a really complex pattern once (custom pattern involving my nephews image, name, DOB, star sign, name meaning and other stuff) and when my mum came round I showed it off to her with such pride - until she pointed out such a monumental mis-count (would have meant unpicking about 3 months worth of work) that I broke down and sobbed my heart out. My mum took it away and fixed it. It's hangs in my sisters house now and I don't look at it when I visit. I've never done one as ambitious since, even for my own DC.

ReallyJustBloodyDidThat · 03/11/2017 21:59

Creamswirls - it's a very complicated pattern, but as long as you know how to count (and don't miscount lol), you'll be able to do it. Just takes a lot of time and concentration. But is is quite addictive and very satisfying Grin. There are some instructions with it, but you can Google how to do cross stitch. Once you get into it, it's not that hard.

Good luck!

DH's car wouldn't start - engine wouldn't even turn over so he called a local mechanic out to the house (after having opened the bonnet and stared at it intently for a while) - the mechanic got into the car to try and start it and said 'what's the immobiliser code mate?'

Yes, for some reason despite owning the car for three years he had forgotten you needed to put the code in for it to start.

He even let the engineer check the car over and they decided it had been a spurious fault.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 03/11/2017 22:06

I knitted 3 sleeves for a cardigan...

Somehow I had knitted the back...both sleeves...one side of the front - and then I started the other side of the front, knitted part of it...put it down for a couple of weeks and got it in my head it was a sleeve. Don't ask me how - but I then switched to sleeve pattern and ended up trying to sew up the most peculiar garment ever.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 03/11/2017 22:08

Oh I feel your pain OP

I’ve just had to stop my x stitch. I’m doing a lovely elephant for my DD and I’ve miscalculated somewhere along the way.
To make amends the elephant is now going to have to have a VERY large arse. 😂

Growuphelen · 03/11/2017 22:09

I bought extra expensive metres of fabric for my DGD s bedroom curtains because of the pattern drop. Totally forgot and cut the widths without matching. I have loads of fabric left and the foxes have rabbits heads, the hedgehogs are half rabbits, the squirrels have rabbits tails....

dollybird · 03/11/2017 22:17

DS was as pleased as punch when he put together his new desk himself a couple of years ago (he was 13). He was gutted when I pointed out to him that he wouldn't be able to get it into his bedroom as it's a corner desk and he'd made it on the landing.

I can't wait to get back to cross stitch when I finally finish my cima exams. I've got a great lion and lioness one that I started (also a Winnie the Pooh sampler that was meant to be for DS (now 15) that I've yet to finish the outlining on).

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 03/11/2017 22:29

I've now got an intense desire to do some cross-stitch. It's been years since I tried one!

I think I'll start smaller than you, OP, but yours is gorgeous.

BreakfastAtStephanies · 03/11/2017 22:31

Growuphelen - ha ha might give DGD nightmares !

NotTheQueen · 03/11/2017 22:32

I once couldn't get the TV working, checked all the cables at the back of the TV etc, SKY box lights on etc so figured the TV was dead and went out and brought a new TV. Brought the new TV home, set everything up, and discovered the cable had fallen out of the SKY box. Angry
It was too far to return the TV (we'd driven across the border as prices were a lot cheaper), so DH got a TV to play xBox on in the spare room.
Expensive fuck up

Mrsmadevans · 03/11/2017 22:32

My dd and I put together a glass cabinet from Ikea and we got it all together (and it was hell believe me), we came to put the final door on and realised it was the back pane of glass. I was so traumatised by the whole thing I lived with it like that for over a year, I left the glass door off and filled it up with ornaments lol. A year ltr and I finally summoned up the gumption to sort it at last !I so know how you feel OP!

I know I shouldn't laugh at other people's misfortunes, but you guys have cheered me up so much. Grin

Cross-stitchers, help! Is there a search term I can use to get a kit where the pattern isn't dyed onto the aida but you get a sheet guide instead?

anotherprosecco · 03/11/2017 22:39

I very very carefully finely chopped a whole load of veg (onions, carrots, celery, mushrooms etc) for a casserole, and then tipped everything into the food waste bin with all the peelings instead of into the casserole. Would have been ok, but bin already had the previous meal's leftovers in it.

Viviennemary · 03/11/2017 22:45

I gave up cross stitch though I quite liked doing it. Just too frustrating when I made a mistake. I once spent a fortune on Rowan wool made DD a jumper which didn't turn out quite right I have to admit. she said she could wear it round the house. It cost me about £70 by the time I'd bought pattern and needles. Grrrr.

underthebluemoon · 03/11/2017 22:50

STDG I noticed that too on Big Bang!

OutToGetYou · 03/11/2017 23:07

I'm not a cross stitcher myself and not really that keen on them as decor.

My cross stitch mistake was to buy one for (now ex) mil, who did like doing them, who promptly did it, framed it and gave it back to me to hang on the wall!

Zaphodsotherhead · 03/11/2017 23:23

I'd inherited my DS's iPhone (after years with a Nokia brick). I picked it up and it was all blank, and I couldn't find the central button to turn it on. I stabbed at it a few times and nothing happened. Couldn't work it out...

...and then I turned it over. Yes, I was holding it face down.

I've got a degree and everything...

Worldsworstcook · 03/11/2017 23:24

My DH recently decided to make the cooker gap bigger to accommodate a 99cm cooked. He was starting to chop up neighbouring cupboard attempting to turn it from a 60cm cupboard into a 30cm wide cupboard and was buying new 30cm door. Builder friend walked in, stood in cooker gap and just shoved all the base cupboards units further up the room on the floor. No saws needed. He felt like such an ejit.
