I've just done such a stupid thing!

I've name changed, as this level of stupidity cannot be connected to me 😜.

I've spent around 16 hours over the past three days on a very complicated cross stitch. I've just noticed that I had the bloody canvas turned portrait instead of landscape! Arrrrgggggghhhhh!!! I'm going to have to unpick everything I've done so far 😩😩😭😭.

Can somebody please say something to make me feel better about my fuck-up? So I can know I'm not alone? Please...

I bought us all a take away during a power cut then remembered we have a gas cooker Blush

Lethaldrizzle · 03/11/2017 12:15

I love that is one of the most jane austen posts I've read! But sorry for your pain

HaplessHousewife · 03/11/2017 12:19

This kit is on my wish list, you can get it from Amazon.

Mission and OP - I too have done the "call the repair person unnecessarily" thing... Was furious with internet company as had been having problems with intermittent internet for ages; it finally stopped altogether. Phoned them quite ranty! Blush Nice techie guy was getting me to go through different things when I realised the fault was "rabbit chewed through wire", which wasn't on their list.... Grin

Not mine but I know someone who managed to electrocute themselves whilst changing a lightbulb! They were a bit miffed that everyone they told responded by laughing then asking "how?" rather than expressing concern...

Morphene · 03/11/2017 12:36

I just spent hours and hours of my time and about 60 quid making a halloween costume for my extremely ungrateful daughter who told me 'its very bad mum, but I love it because I love you'.

When I put the arm in, inside out so the sleeve seam was visible, I just should have left it there rather than unpicking for what felt like about a week.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/11/2017 12:41

A friend of mine was doing a cross stitch picture that was a long strip. For some reason best known to herself, she decided to start at one end, and work to the middle, then go to the other end, and work back to the middle again.

When she got to the middle, she hadn't started at the right level, so the two parts didn't meet up correctly.

Most memorable sewing-related fuck-up: going into a trance whilst sewing something on my knee and finding I'd stitched it to my bloody skirt

allthecheese · 03/11/2017 12:50

Last weekend I built an entire IKEA chest of drawers backwards. I had to take the whole thing apart and rebuild it, and had already hammered the back on to the front so also have some lovely nail holes to go along with it.

99balloonsandproblems · 03/11/2017 12:54

I spent two hours making stock and then poured it all through a sieve in the sink Grin

ArcheryAnnie · 03/11/2017 12:54

BlueTongueSkink I did that with a massive pan of chicken stock. I have never ever made chicken stock since.

Ifearthecold · 03/11/2017 12:55

I too have sewed myself into things I was making, curtains in my case, it was lots of straight sewing and I just drifted off mentally and realised that my top was now part of the curtains and had to unpick.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 03/11/2017 12:56

I built an Ikea desk upside down so when we turned it the right way up it skittered around on splayed legs like Bambi on ice. We laugh about it now through gritted teeth

Gingernaut · 03/11/2017 12:59

I have done cross stitch for years. For years, I tell you.

I have an impressive body of work which I have photocopied or photographed and keep these copies in an art folder.

I am attempting to complete a Christmas card free gift that came with a cross stitch magazine.

It has so far taken more than 3 times the estimated 5 hours of work and I have had to unpick this fucker 3 times so far.

It's embarrassing. Blush

Years of experience. Years. A portfolio. Honest. You'd never guess. Blush Blush Blush

Elphame · 03/11/2017 13:02

I think most x stitchers have done this - I certainly have,

I'd chuck it and just start again.

Njordsgrrrl · 03/11/2017 13:03

I've just got into cross stitch and have fucked up everything I've attempted so far Hmm That's a lovely one OP.

ReallyJustBloodyDidThat · 03/11/2017 13:08

When she got to the middle, she hadn't started at the right level, so the two parts didn't meet up correctly.

Genuis - I feel much better now, thank you Grin.

I cross stitch too so can feel your pain. I had to unpick a section of my latest one just last night. Thankfully mine was only an hours work.

For a hobby that seems all ladylike there's a fuckton of swearing involved, bit of crying, and the occasional actual bleeding.

I'm working on 32ct evenweave working 1 over 1. That's my biggest fuckup I think. What a stupid decision.

Naty1 · 03/11/2017 13:30

I bought my mum x stitch baby notification for dd1 (GD1). She started it and never finished it (dd now 5.5yo. She did however manage to do one for other GD (dsis' one) years ago. And maybe also for dsis other dc.
Im going to eventually have to do it myself (when i'll have the time with 2 dc im not sure).
It's so easy to go wrong, just one little miscount.

AcrossthePond55 · 03/11/2017 13:35

There are some thread conversion charts online.

Google something like 'thread conversion chart (or) to

Sometimes you have to convert the brand you're using to brand B then convert brand B to a brand available in your area.

Also, this company ships outside the US. Not sure of costs though.

www.everythingcrossstitch.com

This is the link to their thread brands

Good luck. I did a minor miscount on a piece once and even though no one else notices it, it's the only thing I see when I look at it.

SilverySurfer · 03/11/2017 13:47

That looks amazing OP, it will be worth redoing but what a pain.

Mines a different kind of stupidity - I used to do a lot of crocheting and was making a circular tablecloth - it was looking fantastic, up to about four foot across, took it with me when I went to stay with a friend for a couple of days and left it on the bus! It was never handed in and I couldn't face starting it from scratch again Sad

SpottedGingham · 03/11/2017 13:48

Knitting in the garden chatting away I inadvertently knitted myself into the deckchair. My DD was wheezing with laughter.

Walking to work one day my trainer came unlaced so I put my bag down, retied the bows and on standing discovered I had tied my bag to my trainer.

I really should not be allowed out alone. Blush

scaryteacher · 03/11/2017 14:18

Matching Dimensions thread is a PITA. Can you not choose a point at which to finish it and then get it mounted and framed? Unpicking all that and redoing it will be awful.

TalkinBoutWhat · 03/11/2017 14:24

As bad as that is, given how much detail there is in your cross stitch, 3 days is going to be a drop in the ocean in the time you will be spending on that. But 'twill be beautiful!

soupforbrains · 03/11/2017 14:28

I was once driving and was running REALLY low on fuel as I'd forgotten to fill up en route home when I'd planned.

I realised I needed to fill up ASAP and had to keep fingers crossed I'd make it to the petrol station. However, on the way there I obviously went into a bit of a day dream and was on autopilot. I realised that I had indeed made it to the petrol station.... as I drove past it. Luckily only 50 yards from petrol station is a roundabout so could circle back.

The care ran out of even the fumes to run on just as I exited the roundabout... 50 yards from the petrol station... blocking traffic on the main road. Blush

Some very lovely young men came to my aid to ask if I had broken down and I had to red-facedly explain to them that I had run out of petrol and could they possibly maybe help me to push my car the last 50 yards to the petrol station.

whatkatydidnext1 · 03/11/2017 14:35

Ohh I can give you a good one.
A few years ago I left my exh. My children and I moved into a house that had been standing empty through a particularly bad winter. Been in the house a week and couldn't get the central heating to work. Pressed some buttons etc nothing happened, house was bitter. So we stayed the night at my sisters taking everything we'd need for a night a right palava. I went back the next day to call out an engineer who said they would do their best to get to me within 24hrs. I stayed in wearing umpteen layers etc. I could see my breath it was that cold. All of a sudden it occurred to me that the gas was on a key meter and it had run out. I knew it was on a meter to as I'd topped it up when I moved in. Grin
I'm sure I've done many other stupid things ..... I love your x stitch though op don't let it put you off.
