Are you an aeroplane seat recliner??

If so, do you not feel a bit guilty about the poor sod sat behind you who now has even less space than they had before??

I don't understand why airlines still allow this, there isn't the room for it!

During a long flight last night/this morning/I don't know I've lost all track of time, I wasn't able to use my telly as the woman in front made sure it was RIGHT in my face and don't even get me started on meal time.

So are you a seat recliner and if so, do you think about the impact on the person behind you?

I recline... and usually do so as soon as we’re off... I don’t give a shit! Seat reclines... I paid for it... I’ll use it.

I usually have a pillow and something hard between my back and seat back... so good luck kneeing. Someone tried it once (Amsterdam to China) and I constantly elbowed them... I am very petty! don’t fucking knee me! Someone else tried to take over my leg room as well... I stepped on his feet every chance I had.... imagine a massive feet crossed at the ankle where you’re suppose to place yours. He moved them to the aisle... it was a looong flight. And while my seat is reclined... I never sleep!

My husband is tall he always asks for an aisle seat because he also likes getting up and walking around... but when flights aren’t busy will happily stretch his big feet into the aisle.

If you want more room an a plane... PAY for it... that’s why they have other options. Don’t pay for “cattle class” and complain about the leg room... you knew what it would be like when you got those tickets.... also chose your seats... like the ones next to emergency exits... non reclinable seats and loads of leg room.

All this good manners/ bad manners on a plane... it’s a tube with limited space... and you knew about it beforehand... why should I ask if it’s ok to take advantage of something I paid for?!!! How ridiculous!

Emirates are fantastic! One of the best services we’ve had... especially now we have children.

You'd have my knees regardless - I have a 36" inside leg measurement. There is literally nowhere else for my knees to go than in your back.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/11/2017 14:56

What @SinglePringle wrote. It’s very simple.

And all these people who ask... I fly a lot and have never been asked once, and lots of people recline.

AccrualIntentions · 03/11/2017 14:56

I'd be interested to know the average height of the "I recline, get over it!" mob. DH and I are 5'10" and 6'4" and yes it's really fucking uncomfortable if the inevitable shortarse in front slams their seat back into recline.

Thank fuck for emergency exit seats when they're not also full of shortarses

wasonthelist · 03/11/2017 14:59

I am in that “mob”. 6’5” with a 35 inside leg. I always recline on long haul

TotallyConkers · 03/11/2017 15:00

Seats recline and therefore people can and do use them. It is not for anyone else other than crew to tell others that they cannot use their seat that they have paid for.

If people don't want others to recline then pay for bulk head, emergency exit seats, business or first. That's the point you pay for what you get and there are other options if you don't like it.

Silverstreaks · 03/11/2017 15:01

Yes, I recline. The seats are not comfortable and my head drops forward if the seat is upright. I was up at 4am so had a little kip whilst flying in my ever so slightly tipped back seat. Not bliss but better.

FinallyHere · 03/11/2017 15:08

I do, but then I only ever fly at least business. That does tend to mean that I don't fly that much any more, but at least business it has got to be.

expatinscotland · 03/11/2017 15:10

Spot on, Beans.

Ifearthecold · 03/11/2017 15:11

I'm short, my dh is tall, my dc are dc, we would all recline because the seats are built for that purpose and it is part of what we have paid for. I wouldn't ask but if the person behind had water on tray etc I would let me know what I was doing. Economy airlines flying short haul like jet2 have fixed seats so it isn't an issue. Where the recliner is available it is meant to be used.

OliviaStabler · 03/11/2017 15:26

I hate reclining seats. Keep I'm your own space!

Osolea · 03/11/2017 15:26

This is a photo I've just found online for illustration purposes. It is quite easy to see that if a tall person is sitting in front here, the back of their head will end up very close to the person behind.

The man in that picture must be huge, and if he were sat behind me, I wouldn't recline, but nor would I mind if he reclined in front of me. Poor bloke must be very uncomfortable. I do have sympathy with tall people on planes, my bf is 6'6' and I've never seen his head stretch as far above the top of the seat like in that picture. Seat backs are usually taller than that.

biscuiteater · 03/11/2017 15:26

OP you could get a knee defender if you really don't want the person in front to recline.

expatinscotland · 03/11/2017 15:35

'OP you could get a knee defender if you really don't want the person in front to recline.'

Several airlines have banned them and if there's a passenger who wishes to use a facility provided by the airline, such as reclining seats, and complains, there's not been a time yet when the airline has sided with a person using a knee defender, hence, why some airlines have banned them. If some arsehole tried to use one on me I'd definitely get the staff involved.

Nomad86 · 03/11/2017 15:39

I'm 6' tall and most of me is thigh. Whenever we fly, my husband prays the person in front of me doesn't recline because I turn into a passive aggressive nightmare who's too embarrassed to speak up.

Ifearthecold · 03/11/2017 15:53

Reclined space is your own space, recliners are built for the very purpose of using that space!

ButchyRestingFace · 03/11/2017 15:58

I turn into a passive aggressive nightmare who's too embarrassed to speak up

Speak up and say what exactly? The person in front is entitled to recline their seat.

MrsPinkCock · 03/11/2017 16:12

I’m tall with a 35” leg. I recline my seat to nap, relax in a change of position, or sleep, because, y’know, that’s what they’re there for. My last flight was a month ago and the child in the seat in front was reclined for 9 hours.

People whinging about other passengers using their seats correctly.... The mind boggles.

And PS, I did witness an irate passenger whinging about this - the stewardess politely told her that was what the seats were designed for and she was welcome to recline hers if she wanted more room...

afrikat · 03/11/2017 16:21

Flying is uncomfortable no matter what. Yes it is hard work when your already tiny space is made smaller when the person in front of you reclines but then you just have to recline too.

If my husband is beind you however good luck - he is 6'4" and his knees will be rammed against your seat so you won't be able to recline.

moonamanda · 03/11/2017 16:31

I thought there was an unwritten code of conduct, I certainly follow one.
Don't recline on short haul day flights.
Recline on night flights after the meal service, when the cabin lights are dinned.
Back to upright when they bring breakfast round.
I'm 5'9 with 35" legs and struggle with recliners.
If you recline at a time that I consider inappropriate I may use your seat as leverage for getting out of such a tiny place-

Totally agree. Thought the same thing on my last trips. It should be banned. Its just awful in the knee room if nothing else.

Kpo58 · 03/11/2017 16:47

Don’t penalise the person in front for your height

Don't penalise the person behind by being short and inconsiderate by crushing their legs.

treeofhearts · 03/11/2017 16:48

I get airsick so they'd get a nasty surprise if they did.
