Are you an aeroplane seat recliner??

If so, do you not feel a bit guilty about the poor sod sat behind you who now has even less space than they had before??

I don't understand why airlines still allow this, there isn't the room for it!

During a long flight last night/this morning/I don't know I've lost all track of time, I wasn't able to use my telly as the woman in front made sure it was RIGHT in my face and don't even get me started on meal time.

So are you a seat recliner and if so, do you think about the impact on the person behind you?

It doesn't affect legroom and you can flip the screen out to keep it vertical. What, do all you people travel in the brace position?

Aridane · 09/11/2017 13:41

Yes I recline. The seat reclines. The plane has toilets I sometimes use them. I use the reading light sometimes, and the air vent.

This

Wow - Seriously takes it to a whole other level

You have to love it. The presumption of the recliners is hilarious. If you are a selfish then go ahead. However if I am sitting behind you be ready for the fact that unless you weigh about 20 stone, your seat will not go back - as my arms will not let it..............The great thing is that on the odd occasion that someone asks, I will be compliant. It is simply about having manners. If I want to do something that is likely to inconvenience others, i always find that it is best to do my apologising or requesting up front. That way one tends to get agreement or some form of compromise. Your argument about paying for the seat works both ways. I could also say that as I bought my house and it has electricity then I can play loud music all night if I want to - not sure what the neighbours would think.............

Thehappygardener · 09/11/2017 14:37

I always ask first, and then recline if flight longer than four hours or so. Have never had anyone ask me not to recline. Almost always have had the person in front also reclining, and it’s never been a problem with watching tv etc. A bit of a non story really, no drama at all! 😊

MuvaWifey77 · 09/11/2017 14:52

New planes don’t have that option anymore Hun ... so ... soon it will be the same everywhere

MinervaSaidThar · 09/11/2017 14:57

Yeah good luck dealing with police when you land for damaging airline property 😂 . Twat.

SuzukiLi · 09/11/2017 15:01

Yes. I do not care about other people.

UmmKultum · 09/11/2017 15:08

New planes do have the recline facility for long haul. I think it’s only the budget ones which have got rid. Probably because it means the seats are cheaper and they can squeeze more in

UmmKultum · 09/11/2017 15:10

I couldn’t imagine spending a long flight tensed to oppose a potential seat recline with my arms! How exhausting!! I honestly wonder how I’ve managed to take so many flights and reclined in most with no permission sought without the slightest incident Hmm

Beowulf007 · 09/11/2017 15:11

I would only recline if the person in front of me reclined. Or if I really wanted to recline I'd glance over and if they were just sitting back I'd maybe ask them if they minded if I reclined.

MuseumOfCurry · 09/11/2017 15:12

There is nowhere near consensus that this is now officially 'rude', in fact I've only ever read this on MN, so you're completely off your rocker OP.

MuseumOfCurry · 09/11/2017 15:14

The most inane whatboutery I've ever seen on MN.

mumisnotmyname · 09/11/2017 15:18

The seats are built to be reclined, Loud music is not the same as there is lots of legislation designed to prevent noise nuisance, in fact it is pretty much the opposite. In one case it is a purposely created function, the recliner, in the other it is an unwanted by product, thus the legislation to prevent it, the loud overnight music.

wasonthelist · 09/11/2017 15:25

Why the fuck do people put themselves through this?
Work expect me to do at least one long haul flight a year- believe me, I wouldn’t be doing it for fun

wasonthelist · 09/11/2017 15:26

Totally agree

TsunamiOfShit · 09/11/2017 16:45

So the consensus is that it is ok to recline on long haul flights, as long as it's not during meal time. But it is never ok to recline on short haul?

I genuinely have no problem with people reclining on long haul during 'sleep time'. There is normally slightly more leg room there.

On short haul my knees will go into the seat in front if it is reclined because that is how much room there is. (Norwegian, EasyJet, RyanAir, AerLingus anyway. Don't know about other airlines.)

MuseumOfCurry · 09/11/2017 16:51

The only consensus I see is that there is no consensus.

Whichever side you're on, you'd have to admit (I think?) that the mere existence of the reclinability feature is problematic for the anti-reclining side.

TsunamiOfShit · 09/11/2017 16:53

In my opinion, it is there as a nice extra feature. It doesn't give anyone the right to use this feature at any cost.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 09/11/2017 17:00

Gromance02 I put myself through this because all of my family are in Australia. Sure if I could afford it I’d go business (I did get upgraded once, was bliss) - but to see my family, economy it is.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 09/11/2017 17:03

I hasten to add I’d never recline on short haul.

PoorYorick · 09/11/2017 18:35

Wow. I guess some of you DO travel the whole way in the brace position.

Your choice, I guess, but if the point was for you to be comfortable, I think this will defeat the object.

Pansiesandredrosesandmarigolds · 09/11/2017 18:37

Not RTFT but I hate hate hate recliners. Selfish meanspirited bastards. May you all get kneed in the back just as you’ve fallen asleep.

Mac12345 · 09/11/2017 18:44

My husband is 6"5, it might not affect legroom for someone of average height but for him it does. It really hurts him every time someone slams their seat back into his knees. Then they proceed to bounce against them every time they lean forwards and back again.

We're only on short haul flights so he always ask them politely to put their seat back up because it's literally impossible for him to sit there otherwise. If the person in front is being a dick he has to swap seats.
