Christmas trees up in November???

Since when was this a thing? Suddenly an increasing number of people are putting up trees and decorations because it’s now early November? What?!! It is nowhere near Christmas. What is the point?

‘Putting christmas decorations up in November is really common behaviour’

What does common even mean?

‘they need a wipe over whether the tree is up the end of November or the middle of December regardless I find! The majority will be sealed up in gift bags this year for ease which will help’

I don’t put any presents under the tree until Christmas Eve and all the children are asleep. Otherwise they’d be messing with them and the cats would be fiddling with them. They would be tatty as fuck by Christmas Day. And I would have to hoover round them.

The main reason I started the thread is to figure out why it used to not be socially acceptable to put up festive stuff early but this year people are like ‘Hell, mine goes up in September’

Once wrapped I give presents to people to put under their trees to reduce the clutter.
If I get given any I put them under our tree but never get any til the week before Christmas.

weegiemum · 03/11/2017 13:59

Our tree will go up on Sat 16th December (which also happens to be my birthday) and probably come down on 2nd January. Bits will make their way out before then, though. Advent calendars (both the chocolate and the cloth versions) from 1/12, already I am lighting more candles in the dark evenings, and as a family we mark advent by lighting the candles on our advent wreath the 4 Sundays of advent and Christmas Eve, so this year that will start on 26th November.

I love Christmas but wouldn't want it to start to early, I don't want to get fed up with it!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 03/11/2017 14:12

juddy - that's really sad :(
Poor family.

Fifthtimelucky · 03/11/2017 14:24

I love putting up my tree and decorating the house for Christmas. Nothing happens until December though. We have two reusable advent calendars that come out first, then a week or so later a few other bits and pieces might emerge.

The rest of the decorations, including the tree, go up the weekend before Christmas, to the accompaniment of carols. My mother always used to criticise me for this. In her youth the tree didn’t go up until Christmas Eve. Last minute touches (flowers and ivy) are done on the 23rd, just in time for a friend who always comes for lunch on Christmas Eve.

It comes down on about th

Fifthtimelucky · 03/11/2017 14:25

Damn. Posted too soon.

It comes down on the 3rd or 4th, or whatever the weekend is before I go back to work.

HistoriaTrixie · 03/11/2017 14:59

Ours usually goes up the 2d/3d weekend in December depending on DH pay cycle (this year it'll be the 2d) and comes down on Epiphany. I can't wait! I'm usually a complete curmudgeon about holiday decorations (to myself!) but I love the Christmas season so much. Here in the US there were Christmas items being put out in our local grocery stores on Halloween night and I hate it. When I was young sometime in the Cretaceous the day after Thanksgiving was the start of the season. There were the obligatory sales and stuff and my aunts would always run off to go shopping for the day but it hadn't reached the "Black Friday" level yet. There are a ridiculous number of stores with Christmas sales open ON Thanksgiving which is so wrong, but recently there's been a bit of a backlash about it and more and more stores are closing that day instead.

Blodplod · 03/11/2017 15:11

A house near us keeps their external decorations up until mid April. To put this into context it’s lit up sleighs on the roof, fairy lights all over the trees, my favourite wanking Santa adorning a huge tree right by the road (well, he’s supposed to be waving but that’s not what it looks like he’s doing). It’s a huge garish out of control hideous mess. This isn’t tasteful decoration in anyway whatsoever. Added to that the various broken down vehicles, tractors etc in the driveway and surrounding verges you can imagine what it looks like. Grin

Goshthatwentwell · 03/11/2017 15:52

To all those saying it hurts no one, I think you are wrong. I think it massively undermines Christmas especially the warmth and spirt of Christmas. No one can be kind, forgiving and hopeful for two months solid.
Keep Christmas special.

TittyGolightly · 03/11/2017 15:53

I try to be kind and forgiving all year. Confused

And I fucking hate Xmas.

PandorasXbox · 03/11/2017 15:55

I just don’t understand it. It’s not Christmas in November. I know it’s not harming anyone but I do think wtf are you playing at!

PodgeBod · 03/11/2017 16:10

I love Christmas and put the tree up the first weekend in December. November just seems a bit wrong. I take it down on the 27th because I don’t really like the tree without presents underneath.
My mum used to do 12 days before and 12 days after. I don’t see the point of having the tree up in January any more than having it up in November.
A man came into the shop where I work the other day to have a rant because we were playing a Christmas song. The company sets the music and it’s a toy shop Shock

DeadDoorpost · 03/11/2017 16:14

VIVA LA CHRISTMAS (my parents tree went up 28th October we can't put ours up yet the baby is close to being born so that's our priority

They love christmas and it takes them several weeks to get all of their decorations up so they can enjoy December with the family and making sweet treats etc

Christmas trees up in November???
Pancakeflipper · 03/11/2017 16:18

I'm another who knows it doesn't do any harm but tbh it makes me go "ah fuck off" see stuff up in November

Cos' I know I haven't:
ordered the turkey
got my form to order the veg from the grocer
sorted out what we are doing with our families on what days and who is staying where
wrote the Christmas Cards
bought stamps
bought the wrapping paper

oh forgot matching tags
checked to see if we've got a gluten free Christmas Pud.
Forgot to make the home mincemeat for the mincepies again
Never bothered to pour in alcohol into the cake.
can't find the pressies I bought in August cos' they would just perfect
asked the neighbours if I can go in their attic for my usual chair borrowing exercise and get their artificial tree out at the same time/
I don't do fucking elves so that's one thing less to worry about but feel a bit guilty at the same time
Christmas PJ's aren't a thing in my household cos' I am such a grinch.

And I really can't be arsed to be dusting Christmas Decs in November.
Just grateful we have a real tree and our tree seller don't get them in until Dec.

I never realised I was so bah humbug.

PandorasXbox · 03/11/2017 16:24

I think the pp makes a good point about it taking away the specialness of Christmas.

LoniceraJaponica · 03/11/2017 16:36

“Personally I wouldn’t see the point of not decorating until the week before Christmas as why would you put in all that effort for such a short amount of time b”

I don’t see the point of decorating so early because:
a) It devalues the specialness of Christmas by spreading it over several weeks
b) I get sick of the sight of it all
c) It clutters up the living room and makes it feel smaller

“Ours go up on 1st December. Personally I don't understand putting them up so early at all but each to their own.”

Can you not see the irony in that? 1st December is early Grin

Ijustlovefood · 03/11/2017 16:42

Goshthatwentwell totally agree

Threefaries · 03/11/2017 16:47

My children lije to do a bit of Autumnal house decoration. There's fun to be had doing this. Sparkley tree lights do look oh so pretty. I think that i would get a bit fed up of the Christmasy stuff tho. Each to their own I say.

Threefaries · 03/11/2017 16:48

I have cracked open the Baileys and am lusting after a bottle of Croft sherry tho.

GreatBigPolarBear · 03/11/2017 16:56

It's ridiculous. I find it quite sad that people can't find anything else to enjoy about life for 2 months without having to make everything about Christmas (I love Christmas btw)
Each to their own I guess but it's wierd

BakedBeans47 · 03/11/2017 16:59

I’d be sick of the sight of the bloody thing if it was up too early. Not to mention we get a real one so it would also be bald.

ThoseFlapsInsideYourCheeks · 03/11/2017 21:08

These posts appear every year when it’s getting close to Christmas and it bewilders me why anybody needs a reason for why someone’s put up a tree early.

My friends Mum died a couple of years ago, she loved Christmas, so my friend puts her tree up pretty early November time because of this.

I really wish people would just have some consideration and appreciate everyone’s situation.

stargirl1701 · 03/11/2017 21:18

I think it crass to decorate for Christmas before Remembrance Sunday. We are Scottish so also celebrate St Andrew's Day at the end of November.

We are fairly traditional and celebrate 4 weeks of Advent in December. The tree comes in on Christmas Eve and stays up until Twelfth Night.
