I came across it last night when looking for advice.

People calling children with special needs unpleasant names. Arguing and bickering. It's really put me off

Do I need to just toughen up?

OP posts:
SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 02/11/2017 12:29

YANBU. The fact that it does happen doesn’t mean it should, or that you should have to toughen up. Teachers are in a position of trust - they are people we should expect the best from. If they want to let off steam, they should thump pillows in the privacy of their own home, not normalise being unkind about children with disabilities.

wanttobeateacha · 02/11/2017 12:33

It just seems so wrong to have it on a forum where anyone can read it. I'm glad others agree with me though.

Birdsgottafly · 02/11/2017 12:40

Well you couldn't put it on a Website that identifies you. The teachers would, at least, be disciplined.

It breaks LEA policies.

deadliestCatch · 02/11/2017 12:48

@countingthestars

"It is not the place of the teacher to doubt the diagnosis."

What's yout point? That they can't or that they can't act as though they do?

bianglala · 02/11/2017 13:00

My neighbour is a teacher and she is as nasty and petty as you can get. Not surprised at all!

countingthestars · 02/11/2017 13:06

Both, deadliest

A teacher should not assume to override a diagnosed condition in any context.

So does adoption and there is a strong and well known correlation of adoption with special needs.
It doesn't mean the dx aren't right.

There is a heritable element to sn and sn as a parent is more likely to mean you are in poverty.

Stressyseller · 02/11/2017 13:13

As a parent of a dc with sn all this white noise just gets in the way of what we should be doing in partnership as parents and schools - working both to get every child to potential and happy in school and life.

I'm so sorry you saw this op and I'm glad you were shocked because it shows you are decent and would never think like that Flowers

c3pu · 02/11/2017 13:21

People in IT take the piss out of the (l)users, people in retail take the piss out of the customers...

I wouldn't be surprised to find that teachers take the piss out of the kids and parents TBFH.

deadliestCatch · 02/11/2017 13:21

@Stressyseller

Ah, you say 'chicken', many others say 'egg'.

wanttobeateacha · 02/11/2017 13:23

Would taking the piss out of a customer with learning difficulties be acceptable then? I don't think it would be.

Just the same way doctors and nurses take the piss out of their patients. Sadly, it's human nature.

Ha Ha! I just knew this was going to be about TES. Yes, as posters have mentioned on this thread, the TES community is largely made up of non teachers now, surprisingly - ever since they "revamped" the site a few years ago and many of us left in droves. There are many trolls on the Personal and Opinion threads especially, that are well known but the moderation there is shocking.

OP, I cannot be certain that the posts you saw were by trolls but niether can you assume they are active/working teachers. Many of the regular posters there are retired or ex teachers with an axe to grind.

The resources are ok on TES but even then, ever since they were no longer free, having to pay for substandard and unchecked resources grates on me and I don't even use it for that anymore.

Majority of teachers now use Facebook groups for their subject specialisms, years groups they teach etc. That is where you will get helpful and real advice, with certainly no shocking comments in sight.

magpiemischief · 02/11/2017 13:33

Oh Deadliest, seems from your posts you are the worst kind of judgemental teacher! Watch out because this type of arrogance could really bite you on the bum one day!

Stressyseller · 02/11/2017 13:42

What a strange reply deadliest.

I don't really have time to worry about causes of sn because I'm too busy trying to work to help my child with sn and I'm sure that's what the very best teachers are doing too, not looking to blame.

If a teenage mother with sn has a dc with sn what does it matter if her age and own sn have had an impact? Yes for planning help for those families, but in the classroom what matters is what her child needs and how to help that child best.

Uokbing · 02/11/2017 13:45

The TES forums have always been full of trolls, most of the people on there weren't even teachers. It used to be batshit but kind of fun to watch. Now it's just plain shit.

Most of the ones I've encountered have been quite nice

TheHungryDonkey · 02/11/2017 14:51

Mother of fuck. Seriously, the ADHD snobbery has to stop. Perhaps the better off parents have more money to channel their children into beneficial activities and private support. ADHD is not all naughty children jumping on chairs and watching too much DanTDM at 11.30pm. But it’s easier, lazier and judgier to believe that.

Some teachers are wankers and slag off children with Sen. I’ve heard it. I’ve heard them called dickheads. It’s very upsetting, even when they were not my children that were called that.

SuccessStory · 02/11/2017 15:14

Doubting a diagnosis and working your arse off to ensure the child gets the maximum benefit from their education aren't the same thing. We're especially good reminding ourselves that children and parents aren't the same people. I remember a sign in a staffroom I worked in a long time ago. Something like "don't blame the child for the parents. The poor fucking children have to put up with them for longer than we do."

I’m not really sure what you’re talking about. I haven’t said at all anything about a diagnosis being in doubt Confused. I only asked if it’s dc with ADHD they were talking about as OP mentioned SEN. DS has ADHD and I have heard some pretty thoughtless things said about him by teachers who know all about his condition. I’m aware there’s great intolerance towards children with SEN that is behavioural, they get much less sympathy than other types of SEN, that’s why I asked.

deadlierCatch · 02/11/2017 15:25

@TheHungryDonkey

I'm not sure it's easier or lazier. An opinion is formed over time with a child and from spending time in education.

I absolutely believe in ADHD. I was in a 90 minute meeting yesterday re. a boy who absolutely has this AEN. His family are wonderful and the child is extremely lucky.

However, (whilst I'm happily out of the state system) the parents who smugly wave a piece of paper in front of staffs' face whilst asking what's going to be done about their child's ADD when all we can think is, when will your child go to bed at a reasonable time and have their hair washed ... you're damn right, it's tough and sometimes teachers fail to be perfectly objective.

We need to differentiate between the parents and the child and we can't help but question whether some proper love, attention and parenting would bring this child back into the bounds of 'normal'.

Having watched the emotional, physical and mental effort teachers expend, I don't really care if it takes a little impersonalisation and dark humour to get them to the end of the day.

By the way, some children are dick heads.

TheHungryDonkey · 02/11/2017 15:34

As you’re so clued up, you will also realise that children don’t always have their hair washed because of sensory processing issues and many also have sleep issues because of their conditions. You can put a child into bed at 8pm. That doesn’t mean they will sleep.

Quite frankly, your Send opinions are quite offensive and ill informed.

soapboxqueen · 02/11/2017 16:03

I doubt there are many actual teachers on the TES chat rooms. Just like we get waves of trolls on MN, the same will happen there. If the don't have many moderators, the threads will stay up.
.
As others have said, teachers are like any other profession and you will have some very dislikeable people in it. I doubt there is anything that can be done about that because most are very good at hiding how they really feel. Just like crappy people everywhere.
.
However, teachers do need space to vent too. Had a crappy day etc etc most people need to decompress. What isn't acceptable is outright disrespect for the children.
