To think Trump's vitriol over the NY attack is based solely on racism?

He has been very vocal over this attack, has called it evil, has said they need to send suspects to Guantanamo Bay, that he is a terrorist and they need to clamp down on immigration.

After the Vegas attack Trump said that the man 'was probably ill, had a lot of issues'.

Why the hell can't Trump supporters see him for the racist this man really is? It is sickening to see him leaping on any opportunity to push through a ban on Muslims entering the USA, even though I have no idea what race or religion the guy who was behind the NY attack was, but seems to forget that white men with legal guns kill more people in America all the time. And won't do anything to change that.

I actually despair.

It's not just racism or 'islamaphobia' though is it. At the moment the majority of terrorist attacks worldwide are committed by Islamist terrorist groups, just look through attacks in the last few years here. ISIS, Boko Haram, Al-Shabaab along with smaller Islamist groups come up constantly.

It's a fact that fundamental Islamism is an issue right now and an attack like this by a fairly recent immigrant should prompt discussion about immigration and if vetting procedures are adequate.

If less is said when there are random mass shootings it's because millions of Americans are against increased gun control, it's extremely tied up in historical American values and can be very politically difficult to bring up. Not a reason to me, but it's no more conspiratorial than that.

But not dealing well with one issue doesn't meant another, separate, issue can't be tackled. Should the growing problem of Islamic terrorism be off the discussion table until gun control is adequately dealt with?

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/11/2017 03:48

That’s absolutely not the case @Jenala

America’s issues with gun crime are not solely or majorly to do with gun possession. Canada has more guns per capita and vastly less gun deaths. Ditto Switzerland. America is broken. Racist, violent, ghettoised, crime-ridden and run by corporations that care more about the bottom line than the healthcare and prisons they have been allowed to control.

Ironic since individually you will never meet nicer people than Americans.

Lweji · 02/11/2017 07:27

There is a difference between war on ISIS terrorism and blank ban on travel from Muslim countries.
There is a difference between war on ISIS terrorism and attacks on Mosques (which Trump doesn't care about, even though the targets are American citizens).

One shooter in the US easily kills more people in one go than ISIS terrorists have been capable of.
Mass murders happen all the time in the US. They're hardly reported unless the figures are really high.
Most people in the US would want gun controls. Except the lobbies.

But there is a marked difference between the treatment between an ISIS terrorist mowing down people in NY and a white supremacist terrorist mowing people down. The white one is "good people".

Jenala · 02/11/2017 07:28

You're probably completely right. I was just trying to make the point that the two issues are very different and I would expect different responses to the Las Vegas shooting vs the New York attack.

Lweji · 02/11/2017 07:45

The responses should be different in some aspects, but not others.
When people talked about gun control after Las Vegas, it wasn't the right time.
Yet, Trump quickly went on to talk about extreme vetting and now asking for the death penalty.
There is a white terrorist in jail right now for whom the death penalty was not asked by the President.

SuperBeagle · 02/11/2017 07:48

Dylan Roof?

Lweji · 02/11/2017 07:56

I meant James Fields.

See, Charlottesville forgotten.

Humpsfor20yards · 02/11/2017 07:58

There has been barely no response to L.V attack.
There is masses of response to NY attack.
How can anyone think that's normal or acceptable?

Ttbb · 02/11/2017 08:02

But this guy was a terrorist while the vegas shooter was just sick...

Humpsfor20yards · 02/11/2017 08:07

All murdering white guys are sick.

All murdering brown guys are evil and must be rooted out of the USA.

Rebeccaslicker · 02/11/2017 08:13

the only common thing that links 99% of the killers is that they are men.

Funny how trump doesn't mention that particular point.

I think there is probably a lot to do with machismo culture; men struggling to have friends or ask for support; more men being isolated and therefore easier prey for mental health issues to get out of hand or nutters like ISIS. But of course trump as a white (well, orange) man isn't going to think about that!

TheClaws · 02/11/2017 08:14

Humps What If both murderers - white and brown - share the same aim? The same ideology? Terrorism has no colour.

Humpsfor20yards · 02/11/2017 08:42

That would surely blow trumps tiny mind.

It's not at all on to describe Islam as "an awful religion". The way that some people use it for their own ends is awful.

See also Christianity and most other religions through time.

MistressDeeCee · 02/11/2017 08:55

His supporters can see he is racist. They don't care about that and support him anyway

It's not Islam telling people to murder, it's a tiny group of twats.

You can't if you only read the daily mail and watch Fox News.

Millions of Muslims live in Britain alone. If they all wanted us dead, there'd be a lot more carnage. It's a few sad men who are vulnerable or who have mental health problems who have been incited into carrying out acts by a few evil men.

It will never be the right time to talk about gun crime in the US. It doesn't matter who gets slaughtered or who does the slaughtering. The NRA really govern the US either through funding (Republicans) or lobbying/obstruction (Democrats).

The first difference between the LV mass murderer and the NY terrorist is why they did it. The NY guy does appear to have supported the ISIS doctrine.

The second is that, unusually, he's still alive.

Trumps reaction is predictable and of course he is a racist.

MycatsaPirate · 02/11/2017 09:29

Modern Christianity is used by the anti-abortion lobby and the anti-gay lobby on a regular basis. Abortion clinics in America are regularly targets of attacks by Christian lunatics who believe that all abortion is evil. These are mostly men too.

There are always extremists who use their religious faith as an excuse for murder and terror. It's nearly always men. And in the case of Christianity, it's a way of controlling women - ie abortion, birth control etc.

Trump is an embarrassment to the USA. I am still in utter disbelief that the majority voted in a man who is a misogynist, racistt, homophobic, bigot.
