To think that people that drive diesel cars know that they're killing children

Diesel cars are destroying our towns and villages. The health effects on kids are particularly bad. People must know this by now. So AIBU to think that people who drive diesel cars know that they're killing kids (and everyone really)?

It's like smoking: it's not possible to smoke in public without affecting others' health. This seems to have been accepted by most people. What makes diesel different?

I have not read the full thread but this bbc article shows some new cars are dirtier than 2009 diesels and old bangers.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-41640746

This is an extract from it - ‘Here are two examples:

~ The Renault Megane Experience (1461cc) produces 0.991g/km - 12 times the limit (made in 2016, tested in January 2017)

~ The Fiat 500X CityLook Popstar (1598cc) produces 1.153g/km - 14 times the limit (made in 2015, tested in December 2015)

But the worst is the Nissan Qashqai, which last month overtook the Ford Fiesta to become the UK's most registered car (counting diesel and petrol models together).

The Qashqai N-Connecta DCI CVT (1598cc) produces 1.46g of NOx per kilometre. That is more than 18 times Europe's 0.08g/km limit.

It's almost twice Melvyn's score. (Melvyn is an old banger)

Five of my dad's Skodas would produce less NOx than this version of the Qashqai.‘

I think there needs to be a change in the way emissions etc on new vehicles are recorded and monitored. Unsurprisingly it’s inaccurate as car manufacturers want to sell new cars. Why is an old banger cleaner than a new car? Why are 5 x 2009 Skoda producing the same amount of Nox as 1 new quashqai?

I can well believe that, I've got an old car shes not an old banger and its got very low mileage, is maintained to within an inch of its life. and it would be an absolute crime to scrap it, I've just checked the Mot and her Co2 at fast idle is 0.051 (max 0.200), HC 92 (max 200)
Idle co2 0.050

How would it be a good idea to scrap it?

Jux · 03/11/2017 18:56

And thank you op for making me feel even guiltier about being alive. Not only am I a drain on society, by claiming dla and being disabled, I bear the brunt of people’s resentment that their taxes pay me for nothing, but now I kill children too. Thanks. Love you too.

sharklovers · 03/11/2017 19:38

We’ve got one diesel, DPF removed and remapped. Couldn’t give a shit about the emissions.

43percentburnt · 03/11/2017 20:44

Zzzzzz it’s not my dads car, I took the extract from a bbc article which I found interesting. The person writing the article tests his own car against his fathers. The link is on my previous post just in case anyone is interested.

I think it’s sad that this kind of testing can be done but one of the most popular cars sold today emits so much more than an 8 year old vehicle. The government presumably knows and allows this!

caughtintherain · 03/11/2017 20:53

Gawd, I couldn't give a monkeys when my diesel car does 60mpg and saves me a fortune.

"Killing children", my arse. Get a grip.

Initial scare was petrol and greenhouse gases ie global warming. New demon is particulates and "dust re suspended from the road"

Obviously you don't care about not being insured, either. Your policy will be invalid unless you have informed the insurer and paid the huge premium increase they will have demanded for a modified car.

gamerchick · 03/11/2017 22:02

You can’t tell the dpf has been taken out. They still pass the emissions part of the mot and the car still thinks the filters still there.

Nothingrhymeswithfamily · 03/11/2017 22:12

shark
They sound fucking awesome on boost don't they

GladAllOver · 03/11/2017 22:13

As long as you understand you're not insured and accept the risk.
If the car is a model that is commonly tuned it is liable to be checked over by the insurance assessor after an accident. If it has other physical mods like wider wheels or lowered suspension they will certainly check it. The assessors know exactly what to look for.

Nothingrhymeswithfamily · 03/11/2017 22:14

They delete the dpf from the cars ecu so it doesn't think it's there anymore. Hence a lot of them having a remap at the same time.

CakeFreeWonderland · 03/11/2017 22:44

@sharklovers

If what you say about your car is true, then:

(1) Your insurance is not valid anymore;

(2) Your car is not road-legal;

(3) Whenever you drive on a public road you are committing at least two criminal offences being (a) driving without insurance; and (b) driving a non-road-legal vehicle on the road.

(4) Your car will be severely reduced in value and almost impossible to sell.

sharklovers · 03/11/2017 22:47

No shit Sherlock. Every car we own has mods of some description, all declared.

sharklovers · 03/11/2017 22:57

I’m fully aware of the ins and outs of DPF removal cake. All mods are declared and the DPF delete is virtually impossible to detect anyway. The chance of being done for it is tiny, there are probably hundreds of thousands of DFP deleted cars out there. It’s the poorly done ones which are being picked up at MOT and when was the last time you were pulled over for an emissions spot check?

GladAllOver · 03/11/2017 23:16

If you declare an engine remap many insurers will not touch it at all. Specialist insurers that will cover it charge a very substantial premium.
It's something that most people will get away with until there is an insurance claim after an accident. According to the insurance assessor I know well (family member) he knows very well which cars are likely to have been modded and will always check for undeclared mods. He has the tools to check for non-standard ECU settings.

sharklovers · 04/11/2017 07:54

Absolute rubbish, I’ve never found it massively expensive to insure even heavily modified cars relative to their non modified equivalent. A remap adds very little to premiums. I use a specialist these days due to the specialist nature of my fleet but the mods really aren’t an issue. In the past 20 years I’ve insured 34 modified cars - how many have you had?

Nothingrhymeswithfamily · 04/11/2017 08:20

i was at an engine remappers a few weeks back, I cannot tell you how much business is booming for them. A lot of that is thanks to dpf deletes as they've caused so many issues and been so mis-sold. It's a huge industry now. Not to mention some remaps give you better fuel consumption.

There will be a lot of cars on autotrader and eBay for sale, some declared some not.
It's a solution to a manufacturer led issue.mazda for one have such big dpf issues it is common for you to need to replace the engine. Vauxhall is another one with zafiras causing issues as they were sold for the school run but the dpf needs long motorway drives.

As for the insurance issue, even comparison sites have a tick box for a remap. It is not an issue to declare it, it's not expensive to declare it.

Resale, some people will chose a dpf deleted car due to the issues as they know it's something they won't have to deal with.

Report finds climate change 90% manmade

www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/nov/03/climate-change-report-us-government-contradicts-trump

MuppetMagnet · 04/11/2017 09:24

Modern day diesel engines are very clean so I am confused by this persistent attack on diesel cars. First we had the anti supermarket plastic carrier bag campaign. Resulting in those of us who used those free bags as their kitchen bin liner, having to go out and buy kitchen bags. So I still use as much plastic as before...but the supermarkets get the additional sales of bin liners. Supermarket 1....environment 0.

Back to cars. Rather than keep attacking the diesel car drivers....how about getting petrol drivers to turn off their engines when outside the school waiting on their kids......or, when at the level crossing waiting 7 minutes for the train to come? Idling is hugely polluting and as the car isn't moving, the pollutants just mill around...outside the school gates. A lovely addition to your child's air quality.

I think we have a tendency to attack the latest campaign's environmental bad boy because that makes everyone feel green. But the reality is that small every day changes would have a bigger impact if we all did it...not car idling....not boiling a full kettle if water for 1 cup of tea....not leaving the tv on standby.....switching the wall socket off when your phone is fully charged....etc etc

This is an alternative view of the man made climate change view.
Not saying that we shouldn't do all we can to care for the planet though.

This is an alternative view

There is almost complete and universal agreement among scientists that climate change is being driven by human activity.

There is almost complete and universal agreement among scientists that climate change is being driven by human activity. Not at that conference. Have a look into who commissions these reports/scientists.
