To go to church toddler group in devil horns tomorrow?

MrsMotherHen · 30/10/2017 22:10

Its our toddler and baby group tomorrow and my DS2 doesnt and didnt want a outfit but does like a handband the glow in the dark types. So i just picked him up some devil horns.

Our play group is at a church hall. The priests wife helps to run it and he then comes and does song time with the guitair.

AIBU for him to wear the devil horns tomorrow? he is so looking forward to it.

I said every word. Adam, Eve, serpent, miracles... the whole lot.

So? a lot of people who follow a religion actually believe in their religious books. Do you sneer at all of them or just Christians?

ForgivenessIsDivine · 31/10/2017 08:19

I think the members of the group won't say anything and most will probably have a fairly relaxed attitude to halloween but many Christians see Halloween as a glorification of the devil and of evil which fundamentally goes against their beliefs. Some may well be offended by your behaviour and your unwillingness to respect their beliefs in their church run gathering. The very fact that you asked the question, means that you think it is possible that they might be offended so I think your answer lies right there. They might be offended, so why risk it.

I don't mock the faithful - as I said I worked for the church for years. I have respect for people who have faith.

I pointed out that there are some people I met who were obsessive about every aspect and would storm in demanding that - for example - poppy poppet the children's entertainer should not be allowed at the nursery Christmas party because she did tricks and than meant that she was a sorceress.

RaptorsCantPlayPoker · 31/10/2017 08:27

I have respect for people who have faith.

Really? As long as it’s faith you find acceptable.

They seem determined to find religious relevance in every chuffing thing as if they had a hotline to the big wo/man themselves and had a greater insight into the religion than say, the bishop. Always complaining, most often self educated in bible studies. You had to admire their dedication though.

You really don’t sound respectable. Not one bit.

RaptorsCantPlayPoker · 31/10/2017 08:27

*respectful.

MrsMotherHen · 31/10/2017 08:28

Not going to wear them and pop them in my bag for later on in the day. Halloween Smile

Who put a bug in your coffee? I was describing a very few people I met who were obsessive and very difficult to deal with. This happened to be when I worked for the church.

Armadillostoes · 31/10/2017 08:33

A bit late to this party, but why not just treat the vicar or other church representative like a normal human and ask?

RaptorsCantPlayPoker · 31/10/2017 08:35

Nobody put a bug in my coffee but wilful sneeriness certainly leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Whether it be against Christians or whatever faith.

You cannot truthfully say you respect people of faith whilst judging them for believing in aspects you find unbelievable such as creation.

Foreverhopeful22 · 31/10/2017 08:35

I was at a church group yesterday and it was Halloween

There were loads of little devil outfits and not one person thought it was wrong.

Put in your bag and if others are wearing them then join in

It's a hard one as it will depend on the church and the priest.

I've worked with a lot of priests, vicars, nuns and imams and have found a spectrum of attitudes. I have found non clergy/religious teachers to be the most vocal though - maybe it's the training.

ptumbi · 31/10/2017 08:46

But - and excuse me if I'm wrong (not christian, or indeed anything) but didn't the Christian church invent Satan? And Hell?

Well done OP. Personally I think that's best. Flowers

When you're not sure about something it's usually best to err on the side of caution. It's obvious from this thread that there might have been someone offended if you went ahead with it. And it's not just worth it for a plastic headband Grin

donquixotedelamancha · 31/10/2017 08:50

@SparklyUnicornPoo

"donquixotedelamancha The 200ish are mostly Anglican ordinariate, they really would give a toss"

Indeed, I was referring to former anglicans. Fair point, I suppose, that they might be a bit more stick-in-the-mud. There are also orthodox catholic and eastern catholic married priests. I was merely disputing the statement that I don't know anything about catholicism if I think priests can be married.

donquixotedelamancha · 31/10/2017 09:08

@Pengggwn

I'm amazed you'd be offended by this. I'll bet there are Halloween parties in church hall's up and down the country. A plastic set of devil horns is not a route into sin, which is all we should really bother about.

Leave the policing of things that don't matter to more neurotic branches of the faith who raise their hands during hymns and go on about "believing Jesus' promises" :-) When you've got apostolic succession, you can cope with a bit of offence.

heron98 · 31/10/2017 09:10

My dad's a vicar and we always dressed up for Halloween, including devil horns etc. It will be fine.

kissmethere · 31/10/2017 09:12

Church service-no
Playgroup- yes
Our RC school always have a huge Halloween bash. The parish priest isn't that keen on Halloween but he doesn't spoil it for anyone.
Our local CofE church has a great truck or treat thing going on every Halloween but the RC church would just be a usual evening service with a special sermon.

EBearhug · 31/10/2017 09:20

Depends on your church. I have been to one where there was a very strong message about inviting the devil in and all the evil it would unleash if you celebrated Hallowe'en, and they'd be running a special prayer session to pray for all the misguided sinners doing trick or treat. Most people seem to be a bit more moderate, thought.

00100001 · 31/10/2017 09:24

Wait, would you go into a Jewish temple dressed as a pig for halloween?

00100001 · 31/10/2017 09:25

would you go painted in blue to a Hindu temple and say " har har I'm Vishnu"??

KichenDancefloor · 31/10/2017 09:41

OP I just wanted to come back to add one more thing.

Thank you for asking. If we all took time to find out more about others’ beliefs and took the effort to be mindful of them in our actions, the world would be a more tolerant place.

Have a lovely day with your little one.

Love from a charismatic, evangelical, happy clappy, Halloween hating Christian

squoosh · 31/10/2017 09:45

They're holding a Halloween party, it's just a hunch I have but I'd imagine they're expecting spooky Halloween costumes...

🤔
