My DS(13) went to the HelloWorld event yesterday - which was billed as an "immersive event" run by Alfie Deyes from PointlessBlog. (This is probably a TL:DR so in short - the event was useless, thousands of children were crying. The event organisers are ignoring it. Vastly inflated YouTube stars put in minimal effort for the whole event and the special additions for the VIP ticket were changed in the days immediately before the event. Disabled access also a nightmare).

He saved up his pocket money and birthday money to attend and even paid extra for VIP tickets for him and his friend because his friend has been through a hard time of it. This VIP ticket was supposed to give him access to meeting some of his idols (I can't criticise him for his choice in idols - I liked Take That, East17 and Adam Ricket as a teenager). The day before the event they were told actually VIP holders wouldn't get what they were promised but would be given a tour of the event by one YouTuber and they now had to enter a competition to other meet youtubers.

It as a shambles and from the photos my DH took (he went with him) it seemed to be a room full of teenagers milling around having being told their idols wouldn't be doing formal meet and greets (as in the norm with YouTube events) but walking around ok and off during the day - so basically the whole place was gridlocked with people hoping to see someone famous walking around. The youtubers in fact seemed to all stay behind the scenes and Snapchat from backstage.

None of the children were getting what they were promised (rides, chance to bake with their idols, play games with them and loads of stuff) none of them enjoying it or being able to access the "immersive events", half of them were in tears and the other half were angry. There was a performance which was due to last 2 hours but the performers lasted less than 1hr 30 mins and the big names appeared for about 5 mins.

It turned out to be an arena where children paid to enter in order to queue with other children to buy over priced merchandise.
Lots of children were pushed and shoved by other attendees, security and staff - my DH saw one girl being lifted out of the queue having being pushed against a bench by a surge of people.
Worst of all, the tickets said under 14s would be seated, so my niece who also went and is disabled was excited she could attend and feel safe in a seat. It turns out, from staff, that the under 14s rule was applicable to concerts only and this wasn't mentioned before hand. She is able to stand but is in agony today as a result. Disabled access otherwise was a nightmare and many disabled attendees were excluded from 95% of the events (which ended up mainly being them getting to queue to look at stalls that were sold out or areas where they might see a YouTuber but in reality no one showed up).

Yesterday social media was trending with how awful it was and it has been completely ignored by the organisers and "creators"/youtubers both on the HelloWorld social media pages and on their own personal pages.

Does anyone else have DC who came home disappointed from this event? Is anyone else sick to the backteeth of these YouTuber "creators" putting in absolutely minimal effort to take cash from impressionable children?

Zoella, Alfie Deyes, Sprinkle of Glitter, Mark Ferris, Joe Sugg, Marcus Butler, Tyler Oakley and their little gang of white washed, hyper consumerism based idiots are banned in our house hence forth.

Maybe it is a good life lesson that these people are not idols. They are not your friends, they do not care about you, they care about making money.

Sad, of course, and it's awful when children are disappointed, but tbh I could have told you it was going to go this way.....

LoniceraJaponica · 29/10/2017 20:23

"These big youtubers only care about money and not people unfortunately, been happening for a few years now"

It's such a shame when this happens. DD has been to Summer in the City twice, but says that the second time she went the bigger YouTube stars didn't go. She still had a good time at the second one, but probably won't go to any more. She used to love Dan and Phil, but says that they are too big for their boots now.

babyturtles · 29/10/2017 20:29

That's absolutely awful, how dare they treat people like that.

Very rude of them, not a good showing at all.

SuperBeagle · 29/10/2017 20:29

Louise Pentland has been a cunt on Twitter about it.

But I lost any affection for her a long time ago.

Loads of people ripping the event apart on Twitter (hashtag helloworldlive).

BriechonCheese · 29/10/2017 20:29

Yes we paid by credit card, so hopefully we have recourse there.

I will take some screen shots and have grabbed some shared on social media.

These things do happen and it is a good lesson when they are a bit more removed from it. DS is asking if he can write a letter to his MP, which is the naïveté of a 13 year old for you but he is saying he "want to help other kids get their money back too".

disgusting jumpd up talntless people they dont give a shit about anyone

GabsAlot · 29/10/2017 20:32

your ds sounds vry mature and thoughtful brie

CoolCarrie · 29/10/2017 20:45

Did your son happen to use PayPal? If he did he could open a dispute and see how that goes. It is awful to read about children being ripped off. You should be very proud of your son for his thoughtfulness about his friend, and good on you for treating the three of them.

CoolCarrie · 29/10/2017 20:46

Sorry I just noticed you paid by credit card, good luck, hope you all get your money back. These so called stars at cheeky fuckers!

GeekyWombat · 29/10/2017 20:50

Small claims and credit card claim back are definitely a good plan, but if you have the stomach for publicity I'd also consider contacting Watchdog. I've had experience of poorly managed similar events (but geeky sci-fi stuff rather than vloggers) and they've covered several of them and were apparently very keen to pursue them (I guess because it makes good TV and is a different demographic to the 'my dishwasher caught fire' lot).

I'm so sorry your DS and his friend were disappointed. It sounds utterly shit.

YouCantArgueWithStupid · 29/10/2017 20:52

I don’t know anything about the event but your DS sounds like a really super star OP.

BriechonCheese · 29/10/2017 20:57

Thanks for your lovely comments about my DC. He had a bit of a stroppy few years from 9-12 and it was almost like he became a rational human being when he turned 13. Grin
I'm very proud of him.

CrochetBelle · 29/10/2017 21:37

Oh bless your son. I hope he really enjoys the treat you line up for him and his friend.

Not all YouTubers are the same though. My DC have been lucky enough to meet Stampy, SqaishyQuack and DanTDM in the past who have all been lovely. Last weekend I took DD2 to Blackpool for the weekend to Nickelodeon Slimefest as she is a huge fan of Jojo Siwa. She was lucky enough to meet Jojo later that evening, and she - and her manager - were absolutely lovely.

Fluffysparks · 29/10/2017 21:39

Louise Pentland is now blaming her pregnancy... Be interesting to see how Zoella worms her way out of this one though.

listsandbudgets · 29/10/2017 21:47

Your son sounds absolutely lovely. I would be very proud of him if he was mine.

I hope he gets his money back. It sounds like it was a very poorly organised event to say the least and I agree with the pp who said to contact trading standards as it was clearly not as advertised

skustew · 29/10/2017 21:50

Zoella will just blame her anxiety and her followers will just say how brave she was to even make it into the dressing room.

Alfie is saying he wasn't paid for the event, but he's a stakeholder in it all, so maybe he wasn't personal paid but does stand to profit from it all. It's like those dodgy winter wonderlands.

PestoSwimissimos · 29/10/2017 21:55

If you’re interested, the Sun newspaper is investigating

I actually really lile louise pentland, certainly compared to Zoella and the like but shes being a total arse of this with sarky twitter responses

KingPrawnOkay · 29/10/2017 22:05

Supposedly Zoe got paid £10k to be there, Alfie and Zoe’s brother £5k and the £3k. Although Alfie says he didn’t get a penny, but either way they’ll have made a fortune off the merch.

skustew · 29/10/2017 22:10

Unlikely they were paid to be there, Rhodes figures going around Twitter seem very fake. More likely they were all stakeholders in it Hense why they were so keen to sell tickets.

They've all been going on for months about how hard they are working on the event. Now it's a shit storm they will say they had nothing to do with organising it and are so angry on behalf of their fans.

Louise has been an arse lately in general. Griping about her neighbours mowing their lawns, laughing that their budgie went missing, slating someone publicly for not helping her on a train when she was not obviously pregnant....

Nil respect.

asprinklingofsugar · 29/10/2017 22:17

I've had a read of some of the youtubers tweets, and to be fair to Louise she did post on Instagram yesterday morning before the event began, that she was experiencing a lot of pain because of her pregnancy. So although she didn't give an awful lot of warning, she did give some, and it seems like she did do all her scheduled events but didn't do the wander around bit because she's struggling to walk. And yeah, a couple of her responses haven't been the best, but she's also been asking for feedback which is more than the others I've looked at are doing, so I've got to say I'm liking her more than the rest at the moment.

Alfie on the other hand is just completely ignoring all the negative comments, or outright denying them, which is causing some of his followers to turn on those complaining eg a mum who's daughter was crying after she asked for a photo and was told to go away. He's got form for this, as well, you'd have thought he'd have learned his lesson by now. I can't think of a specific example but I know there's been more than one incident, and he has blatantly ripped his fans off before eg with his pointless books- books you buy, then fill in yourself eg draw a picture of this etc. I saw it in a bookshop when it came out, and remember being shocked that they were charging so much for it (think it was around £10), esp as he had basically copied the idea, from 'Wreck this journal.'

Others at the event haven't commented at all. But it does seem like even some of the youtubers invited to the event to be part of it weren't all treated well- look up JanaVlogs on twitter, and you'll see what I mean.

LucyPevensie671 · 29/10/2017 22:30

These YouTubers put in minimal effort and work in everything they do but still cash in on millions of pounds. Zoella goes for periods of months without putting up a new video and then puts one up and gets millions of views and thousands of pounds. They don't respect their fans and most of the YouTubers you listed are IMO not nice people.

I'm not surprised about what happened at HelloWorld- the main attractions were selfish individuals who have mostly never worked a day in their lives.

However, I'm sorry your DS is upset and has wasted his money. As you said OP, I would advise that all parents avoid these people in future and do not encourage your children to idolise these people.

skustew · 29/10/2017 22:36

There was a thread on zoella and her 50 quid advent calendar that was awful value. These people are just terrible and don't get called out as they are manipulative and try to make their followers think they are their friends.

Zoella can make 50k just from the links in a monthly faves video.
