Are 14 inch calves huge?

MinesaBottle · 29/10/2017 00:25

I'm 5'2" and my calves are 14 inches. I'm a size 10 and I walk a lot and swim, and I think I look in proportion! I'm trying to find some knee boots and everything I've tried on is too tight or won't zip up. (I'm a shoe size 6). Yet I do have a pair of knee boots from the 70s from my mum, who was about my size then, that fit fine! Do I have giant calves or is everything now made for women with legs about the size of a ten year old?

Also short and calfy - in my case partly genetic and partly sport-related.

Matalan has stretchy boots at the moment, which has been a useful solution for me in the past (M&S used to do them).

Alternatively I found Rocket Dogs last winter which are generous in the calf region. I've worn them daily for a year except the sunnier days ... so that's easily 150 times, and they're only now starting to look worn.

Ted and Muffy do brilliant knee high boots in different calf sizes. I've always had trouble getting long boots to fit (even when I was a teen and a size 8, always had large calves) so when I discovered T&M I went a bit mad a couple of years back and bought 5 or 6 pairs in the sale. I've found them to be great quality, not cheap but they're definitely worth it I think. I wear mine a lot and they still look fab. They usually have a great sale in January 👍🏻

I walk a lot too. Have 18 inch calves but really narrow feet - get my boots from Clarkes. They have a wide calf fitting.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 29/10/2017 09:51

I think long boots are made for taller women than 5’2

Even when slim and my calves were nice they didn’t fit properly

BillyDaveysDaughter · 29/10/2017 09:56

I'm 5'3" with no ankles - hardly any narrowing between calf and foot. Cankles. My calves are 17" and my legs ridiculously short. I have got some nice knee boots though, they give me ankles!

Auburn2001 · 29/10/2017 10:04

I'm five feet tall and have just measured my calves! 14".
Have always had muscular legs.
Calf length boots make my legs look huge.
I stick to ankle boots but have a pair of Earth Spirit knee length boots that are comfortable.
Might look for a pair of lace up boots.

Willowfrost · 29/10/2017 10:08

SimplyBe have a very good clip on their website explain under 5'2 and boot width !

sanddune11 · 29/10/2017 10:11

Do you realise OP that you're responsible for loads of women (myself included) up and down the country now having to disturb themselves and go searching for bloody tape measures. Grin

Albertschair · 29/10/2017 10:16

I'm 5 ft 6. size 4 shoe and 15 inch calves (around the meaty muscular part). I too get complimented on the shape of my legs (I suspect a bit of scraping the barrel there).

My friends ' wellies (size 7 etc) fit my calves perfectly. I've had to hunt to find any that fit around a naked leg. Let alone any over jeans.

Just cos my feet are small does not mean my legs are. Proper lace ups are hard to find. They are all pretend lace ups with zips.

MadisonAvenue · 29/10/2017 10:17

I always thought I had huge calves but feel pretty normal after measuring them at 15". I'm 5'7" and a size 12 and I do a lot of walking.

PolkaDottyRose · 29/10/2017 10:19

I've just measured mine and they are 15 1/2..I guess that is big.

Butteredparsn1ps · 29/10/2017 10:26

I’m a short arse with fat calves. I think I have pit ponies in my family tree.

I find boots a bit hit and miss, even within the same store. I Currently have a pair I bought from Debenhams last year that are mostly leather with an elastic panel that fit fine.

Auburn2001 · 29/10/2017 10:29

Sanddune11 I also measured my thighs this week for another MN thread on sizing!

sanddune11 · 29/10/2017 10:37

Now that i darent do Auburn Grin

0utForAWalkBitch · 29/10/2017 10:39

5.3 here, size 5 shoe, 13.5 inch calf - at nearly 12 stone I am heavier than I've ever been right now. I have ALWAYS had trouble with knee boots, even at 9 stone. I go for looser, slouchy pull on styles now, rather than anything that zips, as they never fit. (The slouchy style are never actually "slouchy" on me either, I just about fit in them!)

rightknockered · 29/10/2017 10:41

I don't think body size make much difference, mine are 14 inches at 5ft 5.5 and size 8-10
On top of that my ankles are 6.5 inches and my thighs are 20.5 at the top. I work out, and walk a fair bit.
Gone a bit nuts with the tape measure.
Interesting Sunday

problembottom · 29/10/2017 10:42

A size 10 with 16 inch calves here. John Lewis sell a lovely selection of knee highs but only one pair, ones I call fat boots, fit me. Even when I was a size 6-8, normal boots were a squeeze!

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 29/10/2017 10:42

I have absolutely no idea of my calf measurement Blush Now need to find my tape measure...

WallyWantsWine · 29/10/2017 10:42

Mine are 12 inches and I am always too small for boots

problembottom · 29/10/2017 10:42

I'm 5ft 7 btw

rightknockered · 29/10/2017 10:43

My right calf is 14.5 inches.Confused

IndianaMoleWoman · 29/10/2017 10:44

MrsKoala you are my calf twin. I feel strangely pleased to have found you.

MrsKoala · 29/10/2017 11:04

Yay - as an only child i've always wanted a twin. Best of both worlds now AND we can share boots. Wink

RJnomore1 · 29/10/2017 11:10

Are my 18 inch calves the biggest?

🙁

RJnomore1 · 29/10/2017 11:12

Oh no. Missed a few fellow 18s and a 19. Don't feel quite such a freak now.

The problem I have is it's all muscle, so I have very defined ankles and normal feet. I did buy wide leg boots once but they only fitted at the widest part of my calf and swamped my ankles and feetZ
