There is an article on bbc news today about a prolific fly tipper who has had his van seized and crushed.

Agreed he is a low life who totally deserves to have his van seized. But to crush it? I don't understand why vehicles such as this could not be donated to charity or something similar. This was a large transit van. I imagine a lot of charities could benefit from a free van. It just seems so wasteful

What? Why the biscuit? Do you not seriously think some charities such as St Vincent's or BHF furniture shop could not benefit from a free vehicle?

If you have nothing constructive to say for either argument then why bother?

Possibly. They did say they were making an example of him. And they didn't mention parts being removed before. I still think though that if they are roadworthy but not worth selling they could donate it to something. It just seems such a waste to destroy something that could still be useful to someone.

I doubt that someone with no regard for where they dump their crap (someone dumped a pile of fridges outside the NRM in Shildon, last year) would be particularly careful about maintaining the value and roadworthiness of their white van.

movingon. The bhf don't just sell large items. They sell smaller items such as coffee tables, book shelves etc. The van could be used to deliver these items.

I'm thinking the same as pp about ownership issues. Probably a bit tricky in that situation.

Agree that it is very wasteful just for the 'show' of it.

Agree with anecdoche that they should still confiscate it but then should sell it and use it to pay towards cleaning up fly tipped rubbish. plus a massive fine.
