4 kids approximately 5 years old knocked on the front door all dressed up for Halloween, trick or treating. Adult waiting at the gate.

Last time I checked Halloween was on the 31st. Our house is not decorated, none of the houses in our row are. In fact, none in the immediate vicinity.

I told the kids that they had the wrong day and that they needed to wait until Tuesday and they should really only knock on houses that have decorations in the window.

Adult (assumed it was one of the kids parents) just shouted at me for spoiling their fun! I only have one toffee crisp in the house and wasn’t planning to share.
WIBU to turn them away?

Lol that's ridiculous. A lot of people won't have even got their sweets in yet. I usually just buy them on 31st. What was the parent expecting you to do - give them cash?!

I said to DH earlier I bet it starts tonight & continues to Tuesday. I don't think YABU. Especially with a toffee crisp, I wouldn't have shared either!

Way too early - I turn them away if it's not actually Halloween- they are probably having a party which is nice but trick or treating is a one night only thing

I'm guessing parents are taking them tonight because it's the weekend before....and they can have a lie in tomorrow if they're out late tonight. That wouldn't work on a weekday night (even if it is half term parents might be working and have to get kids up for holiday club etc)

We have a bowl of sweets ready to go but I certainly won’t be handing any out before Halloween. It’s far too early tonight!

Easter trees? wtf?

I live in Halloween central (Canada). People have had their decorations up for weeks, shops are full of them, kids wore costumes to school yesterday, people have parties.

THERE IS NO TRICK OR TREATING EXCEPT THE 31st. This is a rule!!!

Yep too early (although I do have DD in a pumpkin sleepsuit today - she’s 5 months, looks cute and I want her to wear it more than once 🙊).
I’m not worried about getting any trick or treaters tonight though. It’s peeing it down and is as windy as hell, so thinking nobody would brave it.

I haven’t got any sweets in yet either so had to send them on their way.

One of the parents was a bit sniffy but tough luck, it’s not Halloween

Lots of people round here decorate their houses, we usually put a pumpkin out if we’re home, but no one has anything up yet

The bell was just ringing and we aren’t expecting visitors. I’ve ignored it but have discovered a half eaten pack of soothers in my handbag. Will that do for the next lot? 😂

Maybe they're doing it now because Halloween for a lot will be a school night? (the schools here go back Monday whilst others have another week off).

We have an unwritten rule here, if no lit pumpkin outside the house, you don't knock on the door.

I think they are back to school Monday so you’re probably right but yes, irks me that they knock when we have no decorations up and irks me that the parent shouted at me!

We have done an Easter branch (usually willow from the garden) with wooden eggs and chicks for the past 20 years, is this what's meant by an Easter tree? We aren't religious so Easter is for celebrating the joy of spring and new growth in our family.

We had some earlier too, I just said "sorry, you're too early, I haven't any sweets in yet".

Dd1 is only in reception and back at school on Monday....still wouldn't think of going trick or treating until Halloween though! Having a party the weekend before, yes, but trick or treating only on the actual day, that's the rule! We just plan to go earlier this year, will start around 5 and home by 7

Ignore her. Or next time tell her if she wants to get her darling DCs some sweets I'm sure they'd be a cornershoo nearby where she can happily purchase them.

Otherwise she can sod off til Tuesday.

Or another idea. Get some of those bamboozle sweets for ranty mother in case she makes a reappearance on Halloween.

Digressing much. But I was wondering this morning where the origin of trick or treat comes from. Anyone know?

Yes wont say too much as outing but DD is in secondary. They are back next week but they had their Halloween Party before they broke up.

day of the week is irrelevant if thy dont want kids up late on a school night thy can go round trick or treating earlier

We are ready! Pumpkins out and lit, bowl full of treats but no trick or treaters 😞 I thought we might have a few...
