To have given the woman my parking ticket?

I went to a car park today and put 4 hours on the car. we only ended up staying 45 mins as my DD had a major melt down which couldn't be tamed so we decided to head home.

As I was exiting the car park I saw a young mother with a small baby rifling through her purse stood at the ticket machine. I drove up to her and asked if she would like my ticket as it still had 3 hours 15 mins left on it and shame to go to waste. As I was saying this an elderly lady walked past and shouted "That's illegal". I said pardon and she said "You stupid cow what you are doing is illegal" and walked off. The young mother shouted after saying how rude she was but the woman carried on walking laughing and shaking her head.

I was genuinely shocked by this. I've never heard it's illegal to give someone your ticket and I've been given countless tickets in my 15 years of driving. I looked at the board and it said nothing about it.

WIBU to offer the lady my ticket?

I think it might be illegal but I would have done the same. Nosey woman!

Actually it is an offence. A crap one but one all the same. Our town as put machines in that require a car registration to print one off!! Sharks. ...

YWDNU. Maybe there’s a rule about it but I don’t think it’s a rule anyone normal apart from possibly a parking attendant would care about. Other woman was a busybody. Ignore!

I think it is illegal but most people I know do it and so we. It happened a lot in the hospital car park when I spent some time going back and forth.

It’s probably against the rules of the car park (tickets are not transferable) I doubt very much that it would actually be illegal ( you can’t be arrested for it!)

Provided the ticket doesn't need a registration number and I can't see a warden I do the same . There is one small car park in our town where this happens frequently . A few months ago when I was in there an elderly gentleman who was leaving the space I was going to take gave me his ticket with 3 hours left on it , I was only there for 30 minutes and gave it to the next person to carry on with .

Dunno how it could ever be enforced unless you have to put in your car reg as in Santa’s town or a parking attendant pounces on you.

Yeh, you're not really allowed to. Most machines say something like "tickets not transferable"
However, I give my tickets away and have accepted them too. Unless the woman worked for the car park owner I fail to see why she give a shit tbh.

Most of our local ones are council owned and a bloody rip off.

I always do it if I can. I've also been handed tickets by other people an equal number of times. In my mind I have bought that space for 2 hours and can put whatever vehicle I want it for that length of time. I don't have to prove ownership of said vehicle do I?

I’ve passed on travel cards and unused return portions of rail tickets too. Yes, there are rules against it but I can’t imagine any one has ever been prosecuted for it?! Will google.

It's against the rules but I always hand over my ticket when I leave. I've never been yelled at, yet. Or caught.

Considering the ticket has already been paid for, it seems unreasonable to object to giving the ticket to someone else, especially as there is a lot of time left on it. I do it and I've taken them too.

Just grabby not to allow it.

I always pass a ticket on if I can. I leave it on the machine if there's no one around.

It will be against the car park regulations but I've done it several times. Realistically no one can catch you or arrest you. I've never seen anyone else even clock it happening never mind get angry.

Agree with everyone else, it's a nice thing to do, and, even if technically against the rules, is not really enforceable if it isn't one where ou have to put your registration in. The council have a car parked in a space for the length of time paid for ~ doesn't matter that it happens to be a different car at the end from at the beginning.

It is technically an offence, I believe. That said, I am not ashamed of having committed said offence myself as an act of kindness towards someone else.

I have been given tickets, and I have occasionally done as you did and given mine away as I was leaving.

Number plate recognition is creeping in though in a number of car parks and I guess that will be the end of it.

Offence or not, I have seen far worse behaviour than that in public car parks.

If the car park doesn't offer a refund for unused time, then the ticket is still your property to do with and give it to whomsoever you wish.

I thought this was just the norm - we always do it (provided there's no number plate required). Didn't know it was illegal.

I also take the view that as I paid for it (my ticket) it should be mine, and therefore my choice as to whether I give it away on leaving or not.

I am sure though that somewhere in the pages of small print about local council car parks there will be clauses to disagree with me. Therefore, I would be careful not to offer it if there was a warden anywhere nearby.
