To have given the woman my parking ticket?

I went to a car park today and put 4 hours on the car. we only ended up staying 45 mins as my DD had a major melt down which couldn't be tamed so we decided to head home.

As I was exiting the car park I saw a young mother with a small baby rifling through her purse stood at the ticket machine. I drove up to her and asked if she would like my ticket as it still had 3 hours 15 mins left on it and shame to go to waste. As I was saying this an elderly lady walked past and shouted "That's illegal". I said pardon and she said "You stupid cow what you are doing is illegal" and walked off. The young mother shouted after saying how rude she was but the woman carried on walking laughing and shaking her head.

I was genuinely shocked by this. I've never heard it's illegal to give someone your ticket and I've been given countless tickets in my 15 years of driving. I looked at the board and it said nothing about it.

WIBU to offer the lady my ticket?

museummum has it-Kindness outweighs petty rules. Absolutely.

disahsterdahling · 28/10/2017 18:00

It's not an offence but it is a breach of the terms of the car park.

But who cares? The councils are greedy. I've paid for a space for 4 hours and it's irrelevant whether my car is in it or someone else's car is in it.

One of our local car parks now have the machines where you have to put your reg no in. It's so petty in my view.

Nicknacky · 28/10/2017 18:02

For those saying it's illegal, what offence has been committed?

Acrosstheuniverse123 · 28/10/2017 18:02

I have been very grateful when people have offered me their tickets. It's news to me if it's illegal, but why on earth should it be, except the council wants as much money as it can get? Greed over human decency. The way of the world these days, unfortunately.

Whinesalot · 28/10/2017 18:03

I get a lovely warm feeling when I give it away and am very grateful if someone gives me one.
It's not so much the money aspect but the thoughtful, kind aspect.

cowssheephens · 28/10/2017 18:04

Oh my, what a silly woman and what a silly rule. Illegal or not I do it whenever I can.

Bluelonerose · 28/10/2017 18:04

I did this the other day. Had 90 mins left on my ticket and gave it to someone else.
I don't see the problem.
Tbh how much do council's actually lose by people doing this?

Maybe if they didn't charge £1.40 for an hour's parking people wouldn't do it.

bigbluebus · 28/10/2017 18:04

I'm pretty sure that is says 'not transferable' on the ticket so it is against the rules - but I have done it and been the recipient. I do worry about getting caught though as with modern technology carried by car park attendants it must surely be possible to prove that your car was not parked in that space at the time the ticket was issued - I'm pretty sure the attendants scan/tap in the reg numbers of the cars as they go around the car park.

Our local hospitals require reg numbers to be entered so it doesn't happen there.

PinkHeart5914 · 28/10/2017 18:05

I’ve gave someone my ticket many times when it’s not needed a number plateand I’ve been offered a tickets a few times too

Who cares if it’s ‘illegal’ wtf are they going to do 😂 I’m sure they have bigger fish to fry and all that

Lesley1980 · 28/10/2017 18:06

I always do it & if no one is there to give the ticket to I stick the ticket to the machine for the next person.

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/10/2017 18:07

It's an offence? Really? I've sodding paid for the time dint get why it matters if I have it to someome. I've done it before and people have done it for me.

Given the price of parking and the fact that meters are springing up everywhere they can piss right off.

The registration ones are so annoying

EB123 · 28/10/2017 18:07

Well you aren't meant to do it but everyone does! Same with day tickets on our local buses, you aren't meant to hand them over but I have been given them and have passed them on.

Notanumberuser · 28/10/2017 18:08

It is illegal but I do it too

Bubblebubblepop · 28/10/2017 18:09

It can be technically illegal but who cares really? It's called being a nice person and the old lady was a Massive cunt. I'd be so angry with her

SomethingNewToday · 28/10/2017 18:09

I do it whenever I can.

I also gave away the kids wristbands when we were leaving Blackpool Pier at around 2pm (they'd been put on loosely enough that they came ott with a bit of wriggling).

I do it too. If I have an hour or more left on my ticket I usually stick it on the machine for the next person to use if they want to.

The tickets do say non-transferable but if, as in our local car park, the machines don't give change then I figure they make up whatever they lose in revenue anyway.

LurkingHusband · 28/10/2017 18:12

As I was saying this an elderly lady walked past and shouted "That's illegal"

Someone who doesn't understand the difference between illegal and unlawful is probably better off keeping their mean spirited trap shut.

Especially if they want to give unwanted lectures on the subject.

user1471596238 · 28/10/2017 18:18

One car park we use has started to use machines that you have to input your vehicle registration into. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of car parks follow suit in the future. I must admit that at 30p per hour, it's pretty reasonable where we live.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 28/10/2017 18:21

Someone gave me their ticket a few months ago and a traffic warden saw; I got a fine for "not having a valid ticket".

So yes, you can be caught and you will be fined for it if so.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 28/10/2017 18:22

Who cares if it’s ‘illegal’ wtf are they going to do

Fine you.

Tartyflette · 28/10/2017 18:23

It may be against the car park rules but it is not illegal, i.e. A criminal offence . It would be up to them to try and enforce these rules against you, if you did pass on a ticket to someone else. I suppose they might be able to sue you in a civil action. I wonder if that is generally successful?
Sadly all car parks in our town now require you to input your reg no. Very grabby, especially when traders are struggling for custom.

Wormulonian · 28/10/2017 18:25

My local council have brought in the number plate trick to stop this. parking is £2.60+ an hour depending on the season. The woman was very rude though- especially calling you a "stupid cow". Some people are so self righteous.

I used to work in a sport centre with a barrier and a code to lift the arm. The centre was next to the uni where I was doing a p/t postgrad. I usually biked to classes but one day was in a rush and used my code to park and a woman spotted me walking towards the uni and said she knew I wasn't working at the time and was illegally parking - she reported me to management!! The car park was never full so why????

gamerchick · 28/10/2017 18:26

Meh make the most of it, all machines will need the reg number at some point.

I even leave my all zones /all day metro tickets on the ticket machine if I’m finished with it. You’re not supposed to do that either.

viques · 28/10/2017 18:26

I always do this, I quite often tuck the ticket into the machine so the next person can have it if they want. It's a little pay it forward thing that makes everyone happy .
