Also if anyone has any ideas how to make pony hair that a) holds its shape, b) keeps the colours in order, c) 'swishes' then please PLEASE let me know.

Op if you're in ireland (i suspect with the use of fecking) I can help you out personally. Making costumes is a hobby of mine and i have a lot of spare bits and bobs, including a multi toned wig ( its a bit pastel for rainbow dash but depends on how picky your dd is)

I'd finished part of the hair today, and DD proclaimed 'its the worst I had imagined it could be...but its okay because you made it'.

She did then spend an hour trying out the sewing machine and discovering how difficult it is - so maybe she'll stop being so mean
