I'm a grown women ffs...also what the hell sort of halloween costume is Rainbow Dash anyway?

Also if anyone has any ideas how to make pony hair that a) holds its shape, b) keeps the colours in order, c) 'swishes' then please PLEASE let me know.

OMG I didn’t mean to post that stupid long non-even-working link Blush

When it comes to MLP dress up, you really need to go with the Equestria girls version, rather than the actual pony. However, my DD decided to let us off the hook with a Rainbow Dash as 'that one's really hard to do properly'. Grin

Try google images for some ideas, such as this one:

You just need loo roll and sellotape. It’ll be fine.

Can you get the colourful hair spray for her hair then plait/twist it into sections and spray then then put them up in a pony tail? Then stick on a head band with a horn?

ScallopedEdge · 23/10/2017 15:56

I once made DD an ostrich costume. Whilst pregnant. There were tears. Turned out alright, until the day she had to wear it and all the feathers started falling off.
Sorry, nothing helpful to add, this thread gave me flashbacks. Good Luck OP!

Rainbow dash wig £12.99- link

tissuesosoft · 23/10/2017 16:00

Or £9.99 from Very link

Morphene · 23/10/2017 16:50

scalloped

I think this is part of my fear...that even if I get it 'right' it may fall apart due to my inept sewing machine skills....

We have sheer scarves in bright fabrics that would work - they have some 'bulk' in the colour, but are light and swish v well

formerbabe · 23/10/2017 17:39

I think last time I looked they have Rainbow Dash hair stuff in Claire's you could buy.

Fellow Rainbow Dash fans mum here!

ScallopedEdge · 23/10/2017 19:06

Gah, Sorry Morphene didn't mean to worry you more.
I'm getting off lightly this year, 7 year old DD wants to be Alice Angel (I had to Google), possibly slightly inappropriate but basically a black dress with some white ribbon Halloween Smile
I think feathers and/or tulle...and preemptively lowering expectations...are the way forward.

duvetdaysgone · 23/10/2017 20:54

You could put small ponytails off centred from her crown to back of her neck and use coloured ribbon/streamers to get the rainbow affect and it would still swoosh without getting in the way. You can also use the ribbon/streamers for the tail by attaching it to a belt. A plain blue top and trouser and coloured slouch socks for hooves. Your DD could make the emblem Rainbow-dash has and stick it the top.
Team effort for you both 👍

Morphene · 24/10/2017 08:51

formerbabe yes at least if DD has to have any interest in MLP she has chosen the right pony...I couldn't have brought myself to make a Rarity costume

We used to wear a pound shop mask and a black bag over our clothes in case we got egged.

Rainbow Dash my arse.

HeBEAfraidBeVeryAfraidMumsnet · 24/10/2017 09:27

Just posting in solidarity, OP. I just finished making DS a specific Dracula costume. He said "that's brilliant but it needs to be a bat costume underneath as well so I can rip off the cloak and turn into a bat!" This is some kind of Halloween-meets-Bucks Fizz at Eurovision 1981 costume, apparently, and he didn't warn me before I started. Good luck with Rainbow Dash.

Alittlepotofrosie · 24/10/2017 09:28

Coloured strips of chiffon type material?

Morphene · 24/10/2017 10:29

hebe that's outrageous! Of course I should probably be making the costume reversible so its princess twilight sparkle when turned inside out....mind you the horn might be a bit uncomfortable when the other side is out...

OP posts:
Morphene · 24/10/2017 10:30

I'm really wishing I had gone with coloured chiffon strips/floaty scarves...but I've spent all my pennies on cotton fabric...

maybe I should value my time and buy the scarves though.

If you are really stuck and can't order the wig online in time, get a white wig and use sharpies to get the stripes in. It takes a while but it'll do in a pinch. Flying tiger and a lot of the pound shops should have a white wig.

Aside from that, you can make coloured wefts from acrylic yarn. Its usually used for doll customizing but the effect is close enough to real hair and yarn can be gotten anywhere in all colours.

Massive sympathy from me OP.

We have actual ponies. Dd went through a stage of wanting to do fancy dress with the actual pony dressed up too. F.M.L.

We did it once. With my dsis pony as ours threw itself on the floor when we put a jingle bells rug and tinsel on it. After 2 hours at a Christmas show freezing her arse off in a fairy costume stopping the pony eating her tinsel and watching the pony with a sleight attached bolting around the ring and splattering a few elves as it went she decided that fancy dress was not as fun as it looks.

Happy, happy days.
