To think it's unfair Justin Timberlake has been invited back to perform at the Super Bowl?

Remember the publicity stunt wardrobe malfunction that killed Janet Jacksons career while his went on to flourish? I thought it was so unfair that she got all the blame while he got off scot free. I very much doubt she'd be invited back to perform Angry

in what way did it kill Janets career?

araiwa · 23/10/2017 13:21

How should he have been blamed?

Ninabean17 · 23/10/2017 13:26

In what way was it his fault? are you saying this was the only contributing factor to her decline and his success?

BakedBeans47 · 23/10/2017 13:27

I couldn’t care less

LagunaBubbles · 23/10/2017 13:29

It wasnt his costume that "malfunctioned" was it? You really care about this?

Gunpowder · 23/10/2017 13:31

YANBU. It did ruin Janet’s career and barely had an impact on his. #neverforget

this Rolling Stone article about it is interesting. It’s relevant because a black woman’s career was damaged irreparably and the white man was left untarnished. He could have stood up for JJ and he didn’t.

WitchesHatRim · 23/10/2017 13:37
Hmm
AttentionSufficientHyperOrderd · 23/10/2017 13:46

Sorry, Killed Janet Jackson’s career? Janet Jackson had already peaked after the 90s with a steady decline noted in her awards and nominations from 2000 onwards. She already had a big career. JT was just starting out, quite normal cycle in the music industry. JT on the other hand actually got a lot of flack from the non incident blown out of proportion by the press. Nobody was harmed, Janet herself said it was an accident.

nocake · 23/10/2017 13:47

I'm not going to lose too much sleep over a multi millionaire having her music blacklisted by radio stations as she isn't exactly on the bread line but her treatment emphasises the dominance of the white male view in the US. More accurately the conservative white male view. I wonder how them manage to justify the hypocrisy of voting in a self confessed sexual predator while condemning Janet Jackson.

Aquamarine1029 · 23/10/2017 13:51

Janet rolled the dice and lost. She knew what she was doing and did so intentionally. It's not as though Justin ripped her costume and exposed her breast without her permission.

astoundedgoat · 23/10/2017 13:52

I'm not in the least bit surprised. It was a awful of him not to speak up at the time, however I have no doubt that the stunt was premeditated between the two of them/their choreographers, as ill-conceived as it was.

It is pretty much in line with the American view that black women are hyper-sexual and less "innocent" and white men can do anything they want, to anyone, without consequence. (HW is the exception that proves the rule) Her "punishment" for what happened was astonishing, though.

CaveMum · 23/10/2017 13:53

Slightly off-topic, but I heard that this incident is the reason we have YouTube:

Two guys heard the news about the incident and were trying to search online for a video clip. When they couldn't find one they thought to themselves "there should be an online site where people can upload videos" and hey presto, YouTube was born.

So really you should be thanking JT Wink

Bruceishavingfish · 23/10/2017 13:54

Why was it in anyway his fault?

Wether you believe it was an accident or a publicity stunt, is there any hint he was the one who did it?

Dozer · 23/10/2017 13:54

WHat happened?

dustarr73 · 23/10/2017 13:55

So JJ is the victim. An adult female who has a mind of her own.I dont believe it was an accident,no.But shes not completely blameless.

And JT speak up for her,why did she lose the use of her tongue as well/

OrlandoMusc · 23/10/2017 13:55

Have you had a nip slip at work that wasn't your fault....

Lethaldrizzle · 23/10/2017 13:55

But he is way more talented than her.

astoundedgoat · 23/10/2017 13:55

Why was it in anyway his fault If I remember correctly, he pulled a part of her costume away, and her breast was exposed.

GlitterGlassEye · 23/10/2017 13:57

Didn’t she do it on purpose? She was wearing a nipple tassel wasn’t she? Confused

OnionKnight · 23/10/2017 13:57

YouTube was around way before this incident...

MorrisZapp · 23/10/2017 13:58

It also gave us the term 'wardrobe malfunction'.

The whole thing was choreographed. It wasn't in any way an accident. I'm all for freeing the nipple but not at a family sports event. Sorry Janet love.

Gunpowder · 23/10/2017 13:59

I thought her career was having a bit of a resurgence by that point?
Anyway, following the super bowl she was disinvited from the Grammys, JT not only attended but performed at the Grammys. He became a film star. Her music was blacklisted. She was scapegoated.

YY to it being symptomatic of the dominance of white male conservatism in the US.

astoundedgoat · 23/10/2017 14:00

Didn’t she do it on purpose? - yes, she had a "metal" star thing over her nipple, so it was definitely a planned part of the performance. I don't think anyone doubts that it was intentional, but it's odd (well, it's not, but it should be odd) that a consensual, planned performance with two participants should result in the slut-shaming of the female participant and no consequence at all for the male participant.
