Life lessons - what are yours?

What are your most important life lessons? These could be, for example, things that you've read or heard that have really resonated with you.

(I've recently discovered the 'thought for the day' whiteboard by the Tube at Paddington station, which has definitely inspired some of my life lessons :) )

Mine so far are:

  • time is the currency of life
  • aim before you shoot/look before you leap
  • if you always do the same thing, you'll always get the same result
  • learn how to recognise and work on my own weaknesses.

The Girl in the Glass

You may fool the whole world
Down the pathway of life
Getting pats on the back as you pass
But your final reward
Will be heartache and tears
If you cheated the girl in the glass

Be kind to others

Be kind to yourself

The best time to plant a tree was 10 years ago. The second best time is now.

Mishappening · 25/10/2017 18:36

Forgiveness is cool.

Apols for the disgusting imagery but..
If you're always smelling dog poo maybe you ought to check your own shoes.
Meaning that if the same shit things keep on happening to you over and over again it might not be other people, it might be you.

NormaNameChange · 25/10/2017 18:43

Some people will only like you if you fit into thier box. Be brave and shove their box up their arse.

Translation - be yourself, always.

YellowMakesMeSmile · 25/10/2017 18:51

Marry in haste, repent at leisure.

And my mum always told me to always rely on yourself, nobody else.

Vitalogy · 25/10/2017 18:55

Two things you never have to chase, true friends and true love.

ferriswheel · 25/10/2017 18:55

Don't waste money!

Doramaybe · 25/10/2017 19:04

Always have a running away fund. If you can.

If you don't need it that's a bonus, but always have something in reserve. Just in case.

The only lies for which we are truly punished are those we tell ourselves -V.S Naipaul

The measure of a real man is how he treats his wife when no one is looking.

The forced reflection that comes with loss - Christopher McCandless

Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.

I tell my child to have kind thoughts, kind words and kind hands. If anyone hurt my child,I would have a hard time adhering to that mantra though.

LemonysSnicket · 25/10/2017 19:17

Mine:

  • if you see someone behaving in a racist/sexist/classist way to another person... call them out. Cowards soon back down when confronted by a spitting mad, 5’3 blonde.
  • The phone is not scary and you get things a lot faster by using it.
  • don’t bitch.
  • Do some bloody work experience when at uni (sadly learned too late).

-DO NOT put a pair of triple platform converse on your feet and think you’re edgy.

BackInTheRoom · 25/10/2017 19:25

'You gotta keep on keeping on!' As in what ever life throws at you, keep going!

LemonysSnicket · 25/10/2017 19:29

Sorry mine weren’t quotes just ... things I learned.

hungrywalrus · 25/10/2017 19:29

Try not to make decisions as a result of fear. Try and make decisions that are out of love to yourself and that reflect your self worth.

For example, don't marry someone because you are afraid of being alone. Obviously there are lots of exceptions.

Bluebell1981 · 25/10/2017 19:38

Always trust your instincts.

Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need.

Take time to do what makes your soul happy.

You'll never regret time spent with your children.

You don't have to attend every argument you're invited to.

Do the best that you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.

Let your heart, not the world, define what success means to you.

Some of my favourites!

BeerBaby · 25/10/2017 19:44

Don't love for money but make sure you love where there's plenty (an old Yorkshire farmer told me this one 😂).

Any decisions you make were the right ones at that moment regardless how wrong the outcome was.

Everyone makes mistakes and do things wrong. Its what you do about it that counts.

You enter and leave the world on your own.

Everything is possible it's whether your prepared to work hard enough to get it (don't agree with this).

Notice the little things. They make up the big things.

Treat your friends how you would like to be treated.

Be nice to people on the way up. You'll meet them all on the way back down!

You can't buy time. It's the best gift you can give someone. (The older I get the more I love this!).

Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves.

thatone · 25/10/2017 19:51

Life is not a rehearsal, realise that every moment is valuable

failagainfailbetter · 25/10/2017 19:54

Rules for girls;
Be smart.
Be kind.
Be funny.
Easier said than done I find.

creepingbuttercupdrivesmemad · 25/10/2017 20:46

Every single person you meet knows something you don't.

Keep buggering on (I think that this is attributed to Winston Churchill. Not quite sure if I could articulate why I like it - but I do!)

Fundamentally we are all the same and want the same things.

Ginslinger · 25/10/2017 20:49

If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you always got.
