What are your most important life lessons? These could be, for example, things that you've read or heard that have really resonated with you.

(I've recently discovered the 'thought for the day' whiteboard by the Tube at Paddington station, which has definitely inspired some of my life lessons :) )

Mine so far are:

  • time is the currency of life
  • aim before you shoot/look before you leap
  • if you always do the same thing, you'll always get the same result
  • learn how to recognise and work on my own weaknesses.

"The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself."

"This too shall pass."

"If you do what you've always done then you will get what you've always got."

"Be kind. Everyone you meet is carrying a burden."

"If you are going through hell, keep going."

Know what you want, or you've no chance of getting it and might get what someone else wants instead.

Even if it seems hopelessly out of reach at the moment, know what you want!

Fruitbat1980 · 24/10/2017 22:15

Life is short. Don't dilly dally.

Life is too short for shit wine.

bimbobaggins · 24/10/2017 22:16

Mine is never rely on anyone for anything and you won’t be disappointed.
Another one is you can’t change anyone else’s behaviour, only how you react to it. This has served me well in recent years where I used to spend forever over analysing everything wondering if it was something I’d done now I couldn’t actually give a fuck.

soundsgreektome · 24/10/2017 22:20

What’s meant to be, is meant to be.

Impostress99 · 24/10/2017 22:21

Be very very kind to yourself.

ssd · 24/10/2017 22:25

christ I'm over 50 and I didn't know any life lessons before this thread

surely life is just lived, does it all have to be a lesson?

does this sort of stuff appeal to younger people then me, I wonder?

sort of instant quotes, like those annoying fb memes?

Namethecat · 24/10/2017 22:26

Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer.

Awks · 24/10/2017 22:26

beer after wine, you'll feel fine
wine after beer, you'll feel queer

TinklyLittleLaugh · 24/10/2017 22:31

And always wear sunscreen Wink

bimbobaggins · 24/10/2017 22:37

Maybe you’ve lived a charmed life ssd but sometimes those instant quotes and memes are all that someone has to brighten up someone’s day. It doesn’t just appeal to younger people, I’m not much younger than you but some of those quotes have got me through my darkest days and helped me become the strong person I am now

SleepingBooty · 24/10/2017 22:37

Surf the Highs, feel the Lows. Aim for the happy medium: Contentment. It cannot be bought or faked but when you have it, you'll know.

tomatoplantproject · 24/10/2017 22:43

It’ll be alright in the end. If its not alright, its not the end.

Shit happens.

ssd · 25/10/2017 17:39

wish I had bimbo, I just am cynical with these trite soundbites aka life lessons

ssd · 25/10/2017 17:40

actually fair enough, if it makes someone feels stronger at a difficult time.

I'm just a cynical old bugger.

ssd · 25/10/2017 17:42

seriously though, what does this mean?

It’ll be alright in the end. If its not alright, its not the end

does that mean when you die everything is fine and sorted? I cant imagine that's the case for loads of people. or am I reading it wrong?

ssd · 25/10/2017 17:45

or this one

You deserve what you tolerate

how awful!!! what if you have cancer or an ill child, or you've just lost your job/house?

this is what I hate about these things

MatildaTheCat · 25/10/2017 17:46

God helps those who help themselves. ( am not religious and it's aimed at lazy bastards not the truly unfortunate).

Speak in haste, repent at leisure.

It is what it is.

WindOuttaMySails · 25/10/2017 18:07

I agree with your reaction ssd. I tolerated abuse because I had a low self-esteem. I had a low self-esteem because my mother raised me to be no trouble and my father was sexist. I was bullied at work sacked and dumped all in the space of a few years and ended up with an abusive man. He attacked me as I escaped. I don't think I deserved any of it. I deserved better parents. Not better people perhaps but better parenting.

Vitalogy · 25/10/2017 18:12

The purpose of life is to experience being alive, that's it, you are good enough as is.

scaryteacher · 25/10/2017 18:18

To misquote Freud, 'time spent with a cat is never wasted'

What can't be cured must be endured
Tea makes most things better

sonjadog · 25/10/2017 18:18

Life is not about achieving perfection. I think for many years I thought that I had to reach a certain level of perfection and then life was about maintaining that. I was wrong. Life is and is meant to be a rollercoaster. Ups and downs. That´s how it should be.

Don´t sweat the small stuff. I wish I could say that to so many posters on MN who are getting offended or upset about trivialities. They don´t matter.

There should be a core of peace and confidence within yourself that no-one can touch. If you have it, then no-one and nothing can break you.

Be kind. Kindness is not a weakness and it is not about letting people walk over you. But if you can do someone a good turn or give them a kind word, then you should always do it. Try to make the world a little better with your actions.

Vitalogy · 25/10/2017 18:20

but some of those quotes have got me through my darkest days and helped me become the strong person I am now Oh, yes to that, I have a note book full of them.
