As aptly dubbed by his own Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson.

Old thread:

And as I love giving you images to haunt your dreams, here’s another one, blasphemously titled ‘Our Lord and Saviour’.

I’m hoping this speculation is wildly off course

Bannon may run for president

Does seem as though the distractions are being ramped up. I wonder if this is trying to distract from something about to come to light or just generally trying to shift focus from Russia and trump

Omfg. President Bannon?

Unlike trump, I think Bannon is a very clever guy, and a much smoother operator (his politics and behaviour are just as vile). I think he's an incredibly dangerous man.

He does look ROUGH, like either his liver or his heart is about to cease to function at any moment, so maybe he won't be around for the next election, or the one after.

lettuceWrap · 24/10/2017 18:24

*Banon

Fekko · 24/10/2017 18:26

Lettuce I read your first paragraph - then was about to reply with pretty much your second. He looks like an angry leprechaun

AcrossthePond55 · 24/10/2017 18:26

Not sure if this has been shared on this thread. You go, CNN

cozietoesie · 24/10/2017 19:45

I saw that earlier, Across. Smile

cozietoesie · 24/10/2017 19:46

Bannon has little choice - in his own lights. Wink

JUST IN: Republican Sen. Jeff Flake won't run for re-election
Flake says he won't run for re-election: "There are times when we must risk our careers in favor of our principles"
Flake: “We must stop pretending that the degradation of our politics and the conduct of some are normal”

Jonathan Cohn‏ @CitizenCohn
Flake: "It's time for our complicity and accommodation to the unacceptable to end"
Flake: "Were shoe on the other foot, would we Republicans meekly accept such behavior? Of course we wouldn't."

Rob Ford‏*@robfordmancs*
There are now three GOP Senators with no electoral reason to toe the party line and support. GOP Senate majority is (was?) two.

Ashley Killough‏ @KilloughCNN
Corker and McCain just walked by reporters, both heading to the floor in support of Flake.

We need more Flakeiness.

There is a downside of course.

More extremists will be in control.

BREAKING: Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake says 'reckless, outrageous and undignified behavior' is dangerous to democracy.

Someone just sounded the fire alarm in the GOP.

Can't wait for Trump's melt down on this one.

cozietoesie · 24/10/2017 20:53

Whatever Flake’s reasoning, I reckon that his timing is just fine. Smile

badbadhusky · 24/10/2017 20:58

To be honest, thank God there are some Republicans prepared to call Trump out on his hideous behaviour. This cannot continue.

BiglyBadgers · 24/10/2017 21:11

Here is Flakes full speech

amp.azcentral.com/amp/794958001

cozietoesie · 24/10/2017 21:23

I don’t care what he said about 2020 - he didn’t give a Sherman pledge, I think?

BiglyBadgers · 24/10/2017 21:25

Just read Flake's full thing and it is one hell of a no holds barred speech. I admit to being a bit cynical and wondering if he was just trying to jump ship before the shit hit the fan, but it really is passionate and deeply scathing. I think he is a brave man to have made it.

cozietoesie · 24/10/2017 21:28

He’s only, what - 57 or 58? It’s young to leave politics. Entirely. Smile

RedToothBrush · 24/10/2017 21:35

Ezra Klein‏*@ezraklein*

In retiring, Flake is saying that the only Republicans who can speak out against Trump are those who have abandoned any hope of a political future. That's the worst message that can possibly be sent:

www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/10/24/16536982/jeff-flake-retirement-trump-speech
Sen. Jeff Flake shouldn’t retire. He should run for reelection.
In retiring, Flake is letting Trump win.

cozietoesie · 24/10/2017 21:44

I doubt he’s retiring permanently. Smile

RedToothBrush · 24/10/2017 21:46

Cov-Tcalaquilac-fefe‏*@tcalaquilac*
I think Dems are taking the wrong message from Flake. The message is, Republicans donors are not waiting for primaries to purge the party
this is a consolidation of power, not a fierce and bold resistance emerging

Sarah Kendzior‏ @sarahkendzior
Agree. When reps feel that they must quit their job to criticize POTUS or that they must obey him to stay that's erosion of democracy

Upon reflection, this seems to be closest to the truth. Which makes it a bad, not good, sign.

badbadhusky · 24/10/2017 21:48

Does one have to surrender one’s senate seat to run for President?

cozietoesie · 24/10/2017 21:56

I disagree with calaquilac, I think.

Not to my knowledge, bad. No bad move though. You couldn’t campaign and do an effective job at the same time.

(Perhaps Across could help us out on this one? )
