James Corden's 'jokes' about Harry Weinstein...

I'm horrified. Anyone else seen the footage? I genuinely like James Corden, or at least I did when he did Gavin and Stacey. What on earth was he thinking?!

OP posts:
LittleLionMansMummy · 16/10/2017 12:08

I've never really felt one way or another about James Cordon. He's never made me laugh out loud but I thought he was fairly inoffensive. But now I think he's a massive dicksplash of a nob rot.

hackmum · 16/10/2017 12:11

I think that he intended Weinstein to be the butt of the joke. It was a bit ill-judged because rape and sexual assault aren't really funny, even if you're making fun of the rapist. If someone commits a very serious crime, then they need to go to prison, not have jokes made about them.

But I'm not sure Corden deserves quite the level of opprobrium he's getting. Perhaps I just have a soft spot of him because of Gavin and Stacey, which I still think is one of the best comedies ever to appear on tv.

Lweji · 16/10/2017 12:12

Maybe John Oliver could set him straight. Brit to Brit.

(and the apologists too)

Herbcake · 16/10/2017 12:16

James Corden is one of those people, like Myleene Klass, Keira Knightly and Lewis Hamilton, that people love to hate for absolutely no obvious reason. I think it's a British thing about people being too successful and looking 'smug'. It's not a good trait.

I think he meant HW to be the butt of the joke. Last week, people were criticising the late night talk show hosts etc. for not making jokes.

Montacute · 16/10/2017 12:22

Speaking of Lewis Hamilton, did anyone see that poem he wrote to commemorate Diana's anniversary? It was THE BEST THING I EVER READ. Let me go find it. Grin

'I thought Gavin and Stacey was maudlin and sentimental shite.'

THANK YOU. I honestly thought I was the only one. One of the most trite, odd, unfunny alleged 'comedies' of all time. Some fine actors (NOT Corden) absolutely wasted on utter tripe.

The poster upthread who pointed out that Corden would never dare joke about the Las Vegas shootings is spot on. Rape and sexual assault - fair game coz its 'edgy' innit and if you have a problem with it, it's because you just don't get it. He's pathetic.

'England's Rose' by Lewis Hamilton (age 30 3/4)

The day we lost our Nation's Rose,

Tears we cried like rivers flowed,

The earth stood still

As we laid her to rest,

A day you & I

Will never forget,

The people's princess

Who came to see,

The love from a country

We'd hope she'd lead,

England's beauty

Captured in one sweet soul,

Carried the torch

God rest her soul,

With the gift she had

She'd light up the way,

With a smile to show us a brighter day,

Hearts still full

Of the love she gave,

20 years since she laid in her grave,

There will never be another like you,

Now a shining star in the midnight sky

I will always remember you,

Princess Diana,

As our sweet nation's rose

Lottapianos · 16/10/2017 12:32

Thank you Montacute. Thank you for sharing that. Stirring stuff Grin

should be 8 3/4

chipswithchips · 16/10/2017 12:33

I remember Tina fey making similar jokes at an award ceremony about Bill Cosby, it was fucking grim then and it’s fucking grim now.

CoolCarrie · 16/10/2017 12:38

Ruth Jones, Larry Lamb, Alison Steadman and Sheridan Smith made Gavin and Stacey, not Cordon

ZaZathecat · 16/10/2017 12:40

I think HW was the butt of the 'jokes' so I didn't find it offensive. I did find it cringingly unfunny though, and I also wondered if it was ok legally to talk about stuff like that when the court case is still going on.

MillicentFawcett · 16/10/2017 12:44

Did you read my post @Herbcake? The man's a prick and he's well known for it.

chipswithchips · 16/10/2017 12:44

It isn’t funny and it completely trivialises what is a hideous crime.

Pannnn · 16/10/2017 12:51

I mean the jokes weren't even good ones. Something about wanting to come/cum and a bath having hot water. They alone demonstrate his utter lack of comedic talent. 14yo boys would be saying those things.

But even thinking jokes on sexual violence are okay means he is the shit that always sinks to the bottom. The kid that inexplicably got lucky.
Piglet indeed to HW's pig.

Pannnn · 16/10/2017 12:52

Though I am also bemused by the criticism of Mylene Klass.

HandbagKrabby · 16/10/2017 12:56

Corden is as funny as a dose of the clap. Hopefully he will stay in the us though I hope this doesn't mean his poor wife has to stay with him - that plane story is appalling

CockacidalManiac · 16/10/2017 13:22

My reason is that he’s an unfunny, conceited and annoying cunt.

CockacidalManiac · 16/10/2017 13:24

Lewis Hamilton, the boring tax exile that’s rich and famous because he can drive a car?
Can’t stand him either.

CockacidalManiac · 16/10/2017 13:26

Keira Knightly can ruin a film just by being posh and shit in it.
Did you put any thought at all into that list?

VivaLeBeaver · 16/10/2017 13:35

I know someone who had to spend several hours working alongside him. This was years ago, before he went to America. She said he was the most obnoxious person she'd met in her life. Loud, rude, treated people like dirt, very much "don't you know who I am" persona.

whatathingtosay · 16/10/2017 13:42

It was terribly misjudged, not least because it wasn't totally 100% clear that he was really taking what Weinstein has done seriously. Comparing the women who were assaulted to "the nearest pot plant" is derogatory. At least Tina Fey was clear that Cosby was the bad guy.

hackmum · 16/10/2017 13:53

"Ruth Jones, Larry Lamb, Alison Steadman and Sheridan Smith made Gavin and Stacey, not Cordon"

Well, apart from the fact that he co-wrote it. Give him credit for that, surely. He was only in his early 20s at the time - not many of us could have done that.

I also thought that Smithy was a brilliant character. The scene where he rants about not wanting to share his curry is just marvellous. He's such a flawed character, immature, a bit self-absorbed, very in-your-face. He ought to be unlikeable, but one of the great things about Gavin and Stacy was that the characters were very tolerant of each other's weaknesses.

I wouldn't call it sentimental either. I find that rather odd.

CoolCarrie · 16/10/2017 14:25

Fair enough, I give him, and Ruth Jones for writing it.

CoolCarrie · 16/10/2017 14:25

Still don't like him much though...
