To ask if it's still a "problem" even if you don't do it often

If you rarely drink but when you do it's 5+ bottles of wine to yourself, possibly spirits if you run out of wine and you get tearful/angry/sloppy etc. and everyone around you is kinda pissed off by it, is it ok because it's only 4/5 times a year? Or would you say even though its not frequent, it's still not acceptable?

It's a problem. Potentially a very big problem.

WhatwouldAryado · 13/10/2017 21:11

4/5 times a year IS often.
Binge drinking is a huge problem.

MonaChopsis · 13/10/2017 21:12

5+ bottles of wine / spirits?! Shock ShockShock Sheesh I'd be needing to get my stomach pumped. Yes that is a serious binge drinking problem and I would find it totally unacceptable.

OyyVeyy · 13/10/2017 21:12

5+BOTTLES? Seriously???

Ploppie4 · 13/10/2017 21:13

Totally unacceptable. Who drinks 5+ bottles in one go anyway? That’s a minimum of 45 units of alcohol in one sitting. Three weeks worth in one night. Totally stupid

FeedMeAndTellMeImPretty · 13/10/2017 21:13

Probably worse, as your body isn't accustomed to it and is obviously struggling to process that much booze in one go. Binge drinking is a big problem and in quantities like that surely it could be fatal.

Squirmy65ghyg · 13/10/2017 21:13

It is not okay. In any way. Is it you or another person?

Bubblebubblepop · 13/10/2017 21:13

4/5 Times a year no problem.

It's not normal to drink 5 bottles of wine in a night though. And I am a big drinker. That could poison you fairly easily I'd imagine. I've never even heard of someone drinking that much, and I can drink 2 bottles on a big old night.

Ploppie4 · 13/10/2017 21:13

Why can’t this person just have a couple of glasses?

FiveShelties · 13/10/2017 21:14

5+ botles of wine for one person? That is a serious problem - I think anyone who can drink that amount must be drinking regularly, I like a glass of wine or two, but five bottles is insane.

Crumbs1 · 13/10/2017 21:14

You don't mean 5 bottles, surely?

Phosphorus · 13/10/2017 21:14

Surely the person is drinking more frequently, if they can remain conscious after 5 bottles of wine!?

That suggests an amazing tolerance.

OlennasWimple · 13/10/2017 21:15

Yes, that is problem drinking by anyone's definition. Particularly the implication of not being able to stop once starting to drink

FairyDogMother11 · 13/10/2017 21:15

Yes, that's a problem. If it affects other people around you and you're doing it every couple of months, then I would call that an issue. That amount of alcohol would probably kill me Shock

AdalindSchade · 13/10/2017 21:16

Of course it's a problem!

Bubblebubblepop · 13/10/2017 21:16

Actually OP unless it's you drinking 5 bottles I think you're (unintentionally) exaggerating that

HipToBeSquare · 13/10/2017 21:17

5+ bottles in one sitting once a year is still a problem.

LovelyPrep · 13/10/2017 21:17

Sorry not me, my mum. Yet another nice family meal has turned into her drinking loads and getting maulding. If you tell her to stop she says she doesn't drink every night and it doesn't matter. Last time she fell out of bed, cried at my dad apparently until the early hours and woke up covered in bruises from the fall.
I just dread anniversaries, Christmas etc. Because it descends into this every time.
And yes I mean 5. She's on bottle 4 now and last time she ran out of wine so she started drinking Disaronno Envy (not envy!)

OP posts:
sweatylemon · 13/10/2017 21:18

That is a huge amount in one go!
I drink a glass of wine a few times a week (maybe 3-4 days a week)
After 2 large glasses I can feel it. A bottle and I would feel very sick. 5 bottles and I would be in A&E

LovelyPrep · 13/10/2017 21:18

I can take a photo of the ones she's drunk so far but I could take a photo of any old bottles so it wouldn't prove much. She used those big ikea (i think) wine glasses so a bottle is gone in about 2/3 glasses.

OP posts:
Bubblebubblepop · 13/10/2017 21:20

Well you don't need to prove it.

I bet she is ashamed.

anotherdayanotherdinner · 13/10/2017 21:22

That's a huge amount for someone who doesn't drink regularly. I would guess she is drinking more often than she's letting on. Is that a possibility?

LovelyPrep · 13/10/2017 21:23

After the event she just gets defensive and carries on the argument that she rarely does it. It does make her ill, she throws up and everything and she won't be able to do anything for a few days.

OP posts:
WickedLazy · 13/10/2017 21:23

That's a stupidly dangerous amount of alcohol. Even drinking that much once, ever, is too much! Do you not really suffer the next day? That must lead to one hell of a hangover. Sloppy and emotional is standard drunk behaviour, but being nasty, violent or destructive isn't acceptable.

RefuseTheLies · 13/10/2017 21:24

Sorry op, but your mum must be drinking more often and in larger quantities than she's admitting to. Five bottles of wine would, at best, render an infrequent drinker near enough unconscious.
