It's definitely a mouse not a young rat - you can tell by the ears which are very big proportionally to its body - rats have small ears.

LEMtheoriginal · 12/10/2017 22:06

I'm torn between baby rat and mouse. Would need to see back end to decide.

But does it matter? Rat or mouse? I'd prefer rat I think. Easier to block up entry points.

I'm on the fence because I likecrats and mice but I don't want them in my house chewing my wires and pissing everywhere. I have used humane traps to good effect but hated finding one that had died. Also there is the agruement that a mouse released away from its nest won't survive. So if you need to get rid then a quick dispatch might be better.

Although I do wonder at the arrogance of the human species with our belief that our needs outweigh those of other species.

happy2bhomely · 12/10/2017 22:09

We have pet rats and even as babies they didn't look like that.

I vote mouse.

Ours look like this and are adorable but I am still freaked out by tiny mice when the cat brings them in.

There’s a comparison image of droppings here

Peaches77 · 12/10/2017 22:14

Ok got another pic

Peaches77 · 12/10/2017 22:18

I know It looks big in comparasion to the trap but the traps are small like they aren't as long as an iPhone they're only 10cm in length

LEMtheoriginal · 12/10/2017 22:18

Mouse!

DaisysStew · 12/10/2017 22:20

I've just had pest control out for mice and they said the easiest way to tell is by the tail. Apparently mice have furry tails and rats have smooth tails.

It looks smooth to me... sorry OP ☹️

ThePinkOcelot · 12/10/2017 22:21

Another vote for mouse.

Dumbledoresgirl · 12/10/2017 22:25

Categorically, that is a mouse. I have had cats all my life and am more than familiar with mice. Plus, I once had a pet rat and rat tails are very distinctive. Not like that animal's tail at all.

Somersetter · 12/10/2017 22:25

Having said definitely mouse I'm really not sure now - sorry OP!

At the end of the day it doesn't actually make a huge amount of difference which it is and doesn't affect how you get rid of them as far as I'm aware. Rats get a bad press but are a native species just like mice and not generally a problem as long as they live outdoors.

I can well imagine why you wouldn't want them in the house though - hope you manage to get rid of them soon! 🐀

Sunnydays365 · 12/10/2017 22:30

That is a rat. I can tell by the tail and ears. I have suffered for 3 years in my house and they just keep getting in and tunnelling through. Pest control said they use my house as a nesting point. Don't use poison as they go off to die and then you can't find them and the smell is vile. 😢

JonSnowsWife · 12/10/2017 22:33

That's a mickey.

We had a Roland at the weekend that ExDH kindly came out for this wimp and killed it.

Not one bit bothered about the methods being inhumane or not. I have children and have been told I have to wait a week for the pest control person to come out. I want them gone. and my neighbour to stop being such a tramp and leaving fucking rubbish everywhere

Traps are all laid down and we are bunkered down in my bedroom until pest control have been.

Weedsnseeds1 · 12/10/2017 22:50

100% mouse.
I was rather confusing by what appeared to be a big, chunky rat on holiday in Italy, until we saw its mum and dad...

I have a little box that I plug in to the mains. I think it plays a high pitched noise through the wiring, something like that. I had a big problem with mice but I haven't had any since getting the plug in.

Peaches77 · 12/10/2017 22:57

I have the plug in but I read you should make sure they are gone before plugging in?? As they can just get use to it

stopbeingadramallama · 12/10/2017 23:00

Poor thing

MaidenMotherCrone · 13/10/2017 10:50

Droppings are mouse so I withdraw my previous post. Unless..........you have both!

Peaches77 · 13/10/2017 14:54

Noooo not both

OP posts:
puddingpen · 13/10/2017 15:02

It's face looks more rat-shaped to me. Young rat.

AtHomeDadGlos · 13/10/2017 16:10

It’s a mouse and the traps you’re using are the best kind to use. No point humanely trapping them as they’ll only come back.

I used to live opposite a common, we saw one in our living room one night and found they were coming in through the pantry - a small hole at the bottom of the wall and droppings/nibbles out of packets we rarely used etc - gross!

Tried humane traps - pointless. Tried proper mouse traps and the next day had caught two. Went on like that for a further week. Think we killed around 10 in the end.

NeedingSolutions · 13/10/2017 17:05

Looks like a tiny rat to me (long nose, ears and smooth tail). But what difference does it really make? Some of the old sayings are true.

"Where there's a mouse always there's a rat nearby" is a true old saying.

treeofhearts · 13/10/2017 18:52

Young rat I think.

WanderingTrolley1 · 13/10/2017 18:56

That's a rat.

CarcerDun · 13/10/2017 19:09

Another vote for young rat, the tail is ratty and it’s face is long.
