If you release them alive, you need to release them at least a mile away from your home.
We caught a few alive and released them away from the home.
I think that looks like a rat going by the tail and the ears.

Maudlinmaud · 12/10/2017 21:43

Not good news op Sad

xqwertyx · 12/10/2017 21:43

I have pet rats since babies and id say that is a mouse, if it did turn out to be a rat then it is definitely a baby, no where near the size of an adult.

JamPasty · 12/10/2017 21:46

Hard to tell - could be massive mouse or a tiny rat. Either way, don't panic, just call the council and ask them to sort it. It's free for rats, but you have to pay for mice (I think).

Clandestino · 12/10/2017 21:47

It’s a mouse, pretty sure about it.
Rats have much longer noses, even the juvenile ones. Source: dead bodies brought as a present.

MehMehAndMeh · 12/10/2017 21:48

Juvenile rat. You have a problem, because if there is a juvenile then there is a breeding pair and if there is a breeding pair, there is a nest.
The brown rat can breed throughout the year if conditions are suitable, with a female producing up to five litters a year. The gestation period is only 21 days, and litters can number up to 14, although seven is common. They reach sexual maturity in about five weeks. Big problem OP.

Jemgoback · 12/10/2017 21:48

Awful way to dispose of them 😢

Weedsnseeds1 · 12/10/2017 21:50

It's a mouse. Snap back traps are actually not that inhumane, instant death.
Glue boards are horrible though and poison isn't much better.

dameglittersparkles · 12/10/2017 21:50

I'm confused. Aren't traps like that kinder than laying poison?
I'm saying this because I used to work in a hotel with a rodent issue - the ones we found that had died from poisoning looked a lot worse off than the ones who died in the traps 🤔

HotelEuphoria · 12/10/2017 21:50

I think it's a mouse. Three cats here and dead rodents are pretty common on our doorstep. Even baby rats are pretty bloody big, no mistaking them for a mouse. Rats have small ears and big feet and thick tails. And you just KNOW when you see one.

gincamelbak · 12/10/2017 21:51

That looks like a bloody big mouse to me. Or small rat. ShockConfused

We have had a field mouse in the house. After successfully training us to feed it peanut butter and chocolate for a few days (the crafty bugger was too light to set off the inhumane traps) a humane one got it.

My dad released it and said it had the look of a snickers in fur form as it scampered off into the field...

I hate mice in the house. They creep me out and the thought of them make me feel ill.

Poor you OP. I hope there aren't any more.

SleepFreeZone · 12/10/2017 21:52

That's a mouse.

HemanOrSheRa · 12/10/2017 21:55

It looks like a young rat to me but I will absolutely defer to Weeds knowledge as Weeds knows of these things. However I agree that if you don't have a cat who could have brought a catch in, then it's unlikely that you had just the one.

HotelEuphoria · 12/10/2017 21:55

Rentokil site says rats have hairless tails whereas mice are covered in fine hair. I think that's what makes them particularly repugnant.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 12/10/2017 21:55

Poor little thing Sad

Have you seen any droppings? That should help identification.

Iiquidsnake · 12/10/2017 21:56

Have you ever read The Rats by James Herbert? I'd recommend it, it's a really knowledgeable and interesting book.

nodogsinthebedroom · 12/10/2017 21:56

Please get some snap traps - those sticky ones are horribly inhumane. The snap traps will kill them much more quickly. Bait them with broken up biscuits or crisps. (lots of people recommend peanut butter but I've never had success with that)

Flarrot · 12/10/2017 21:57

It’s a baby rat

CatastropheKate · 12/10/2017 21:57

Another vote for mouse here

nodogsinthebedroom · 12/10/2017 21:59

Sorry - just looked at the picture more closely and can see it is a snap trap.

shuggas · 12/10/2017 22:00

a mouse 100% Not a rat x I have been a rat owner for years, seen pregnancy and butch, that is a mouse xx

Peaches77 · 12/10/2017 22:00

This is the droppings we had a few underneath. The sofa where it was seen

Don’t get a cat! There are no mice in my house unless the fecking cats take them in, still alive and then lose them.

Maudlinmaud · 12/10/2017 22:02

Tell me where you are Peaches and I'll post you a cat. God knows I have enough of them.
