to think I will never lose weight?

I'm hoping someone can reassure me that losing 4 to 5 stone is still do-able when I am such a picky eater and super busy with a full time job, university course and child?

I eat too much junk and I'm a really bad cook. Seriously, I don't even know what most labels mean and leave it to DH who works two jobs so it's mostly take outs or ready meals for us.

I hate all fish except haddock. I don't like pasta or pizza. I hate most veggies unless in soup and even then it's only some soups. (I bought two soup makers and neither of them worked even with instructions and asking on help on here so I can't even make fucking soup. I feel pretty useless)

I don't like much fruit, except apples, satsumas, strawberries and grapes.

I hate salads - there's no taste and I don't like seasonings/dressings.

No seeds or nuts (except peanuts). No cheese, quorn.

DH hates fish, eggs, nuts and anything with a visible bone.

I love chocolate, chips, chinese food, fast food basically

I can't get to a gym time wise so I keep saying I'll try the likes of the 30 day shred but then work, study, and entertaining DD just takes over.

My uni used my old student photo for my 'new' card. They said I didn't need to send a new photo because they already had one and I stupidly agreed only to get a card through with a young, skinny, pretty me. What will shops etc think when I'm requesting a discount? Who is this woman in this card? Has she stolen the card?

I have in the past, tried and failed at SW, nutricheck, cambridge, hypnotherapy, myfitnesspal also tried and failed at gyms, zumba, yoga, pilates, personal training, using fitbits.

I did lose 2 stone through WW about 3 years ago but then WW changed their diet and there was nothing I liked to eat.

Is there any way in which I can lose weight whilst not eating food I hate?

OP, if you want reassurance that you can lose 5 stone while only eating pizza, chinese food and burgers and never cooking from scratch then I'm afraid that's not going to happen. You could lose weight eating those things if you only ate very, very, small portions every day but you'd not only be crying from the hunger, you'd also be massively malnourished!

But you CAN change, I promise you. The reason you don't like fruit and veg is very likely because you don't eat much of it. Once you get yourself more used to eating something you'll find that you actually start to enjoy it. I remember hearing some statistic (which is probably bollocks but I think there's a grain of truth in there) about how you need to try something fourteen times to get yourself to like the taste of it. On those (awful) dieting TV shows people always seem to come out the other side saying that such-and-such is now their favourite food even though they previously hated it.

I promise you, I would much rather have a pizza every night than a plate of broccoli but I know that pizza will make me fat, greasy, spotty and grumpy if I eat it every day, so I don't.

What kind of veg do you hate the least? Start there and see what you can make with that. Soups are dead easy, you don't need a 'soup maker' or even a blender, just chop all the veg up small and add some stock. It doesn't matter if you end up overcooking it a bit at first, it'll still taste good and that's how you'll learn! Watch some videos on YouTube for help if you're struggling.

Can you afford to see a nutritionist for a couple of sessions? That might help you to come up with a meal plan that works for you.

Good luck. You CAN do it!

I think weight loss is secondary. it sounds like you have an unhealthy diet. So not only is it not good for weight loss, you probably aren't getting the good stuff and too much bad.

I'd say the easiest entry into cooking is youtube. Try and find some of the chinese dishes you like and see if there is someone who has posted a recipe.

I too like chips and chocolate, but you can get in the habit of eating a salad with your meal. I am now in the mindset that a meal isn't complete without one.

I agree with much of your post, but this sounds unnecessarily grim. A tasty salad is isn't just a tasty salad, it's tasty food. I am no angel when eating, but my diet in recent years has gotten much better and my tolerance for low quality food has dropped substantially. The smell of a greasy diner turns me right off. As does a greasy pizza (I do however really like good pizza).

If you view good healthy food as a 3 times a day chore, it's going to be hard. Find some healthy foods you can make that you really like and build from there. I'd say don't even worry about the fat content to begin with. Just make sure you can make it with real ingredients and that you enjoy it.

well whatever the ww thing was, do that!

i struggle with my weight too, i did however manage a few stone earlier in the year, its all gone back on because i just fell off the wagon.

I did do a lot of stirfried rice with chicken and veggies. I really filled my boots, but the only thing was I was trying to get 50% of my plate being veg. I used tonnes of chopped peppers, onions and mushrooms. I cooked it in frylight with loads of pepper. that was a real favourite for me. I was low sodium, but if i wasnt, I would have chucked some soy sauce in with it. honestly was a real favourite of mine.
It was great, i had huge bowls of food, that were lovely to eat, and i was absolutely stuffed, but mostly on healthy things.

Ive just put in an order for a food shop this week, which i will pick up in the morning.
I have loads of oats, which I will eat with banana or plain.
i will just cook up batches of chilli/ chicken balti/ chicken fried rice/ pasta with bolognese type of sauce/ roast dinner type meals. ..loads of veg, bit of potato and roasted meat.

I even keep a few spare portions in the fridge incase im hungry, so i dont go ruining my diet.

my absolute saviours have been the fizzy water in aldi and lidl, I also snack on dark chocolate if i fancy something sweet.

Mullerlights, bananas and grapes are also something i keep close.

One week, not necessarily my first week on this plan I lost 6 lb. it was amazing.

Will the low carb people just keep stop pushing their agenda, there is absolutely nothing wrong with carbs in moderation, any nutritionist who would tell you to cut them out unless there is a medical issue is a idiot, you do not cut out a food group.

That's exactly that nothing wrong with most things in moderation, if you eat too much you will put on weight, trick is to cut down portion sizes and move more.

I don't buy you don't have time to cook, a jacket spud is one of easiest things to cook in world and takes 30mins if you do it in microwave for 10mins first.

All the low carb people seem to forget that most runners tend to eat lots of carbs before their races, but of course those are over weight.

Octopus37 · 08/10/2017 18:49

You can do it, with a few tweaks. Firstly, it is possible to lose weight without having to do loads of cooking for give up take aways. You need to believe you can do it, whilst also being kind to yourself. Over in weigt loss there is a thread entitled, lose weight being kind to yourself, why not come over and join us. Meanwhile I have some tips:

You say you don't like fruit, but you listed four types that you like, if you add an apple a day in that would be a start.

As others have said, you don't need a soup maker, especially when pots of soup that go in the microwave don't break the bank, if you could find one or two you like it would be a start.

You don't have to give up take aways but you do need to go for healthier options. Eg shish kebab rather than a donor kebab, tandorri chicken rather than a creamy curry. stir fry or beef and black bean sauce. Pizza unfortunately is a bit of a no goer, although some of the frozen thin and crispy ones dont come up too badly calorie wise, also healthy options in Zizzi and Pizza Express.

Stuck for time for breakfast. I know in an ideal world you're supposed to eat eggs or something, I hate them and cannot do them. You can eat something like some Belvita breakfast biscuits. Some will slate you for this, but it is a way of eating a breakfast you like whilst limiting calories.

Dont worry about the gym for now, dowload a pedometer on your phone and aim for 10,000 steps a day as a minimum. Build on this as you get fitter and lose weight.

Ready meals. Some say they are the work of the devil, but if you look at the calories some are not too bad. Just do your homework in the Supermarket. When you are feeling a bit more up to speed on this, try and do shopping online. If you do an Iceland shop, you get free delivery if you spend £35, they also do Slimming World ready meals, including a couple of nice Chinese options and usually chuck in a freebie if you buy however many. Also make sure you sign up with Quidco to get cash back to spend on new clothes when you've ost some weight. Iceland come under Quidco.

I am in the process of losing some weight myself, have lost just over half a stone and have a few more pounds to lose. Think a huge part of it is getting in the right mindset, someone said on here, losing weight is hard and being fat is hard, pick your hard, the way I look at it one of these hards is going to get harder, one is going to get easier. Dont get me wrong, I have fallen off the wagon a few times in the last six weeks but am learning not to just throw the towel in. You can do it. If you want to post a typical day's food, I can look at it and tweak it to make it lower in calories to show you how much easier it can be. Good luck

MatildaTheCat · 08/10/2017 18:56

What do you mean by, 'I don't even know what the labels mean?' As a university student this is pretty baffling. Maybe you don't like what they tell you so you don't read them. Ready meals and takeaways are generally about as unhealthy as it gets unless you like consuming a pound of lard and a glass of fructose. Some of the ingredients are also addictive.

Tons of good, well reasoned advice on this thread. Stop making excuses and start planning. Weight loss over.a sustained period is only possible with proper planning. Make a weekly meal plan from foods you like and are quick to prepare. Do an online shop and then JFDI.

frieda909 · 08/10/2017 19:23

habenero20 Well obviously my post was massively simplifying things - I do actually enjoy the taste of veg, obviously! I just mean that the enjoyment also comes from feeling nourished afterwards in a way that I wouldn't get if I ate pizza every day.

Keeping weight off for me is a constant battle, and I find that the only way for me is to have lots of determination to eat healthy food and exercise. You have to want to do it before you can do it. After each of my two children, I put on loads of weight and never really lost it. Five years ago I'd had enough, and with encourageent from DH I went on a diet. That and starting jogging has been my saviour, but its hard!

Hippadippadation · 08/10/2017 22:29

HeresMe re the low carb thing. I don't usually get involved in these threads, as I tend to "quietly" low carb. Low carbing is not cutting out a food group. We still eat carbs, but from vegetables rather than processed carbs like bread etc. It's just the same as following a low fat diet - you still eat fat, just not as much of it and "cut out" things like butter etc.

As for the running thing, I've been a runner for a while, both carb adapted and fat adapted. My running has improved on LCHF and I got a 5 minute half marathon PB fuelled by eggs and chorizo, compared to the half fuelled by toast, peanut butter and banana.

No one is "pushing their agenda" - people are simply commenting on what works best for them. Are you accusing the Slimming World / Weightwatchers / calorie counting people of "pushing their agenda"? No.

OP if you genuinely don't like everything, then you will have to just eat less of what you do like I'm afraid. You might be hungry, but how badly do you want to lose the weight?

BlueEyedWonder · 08/10/2017 22:57

Yes, you can if you are sufficiently motivated to do so.
There's no quick fix. You need to eat less, count calories and move more.
Avoid fad diets. But we all know the foods we should eat more of and the ones we should avoid.
Soups and smoothies are good if you struggle with fruit and veg.
Try the wholemeal sandwich thins instead of bread.
Cut out crisps, sweets and chocolate. Have a weekly treat.
