to think I will never lose weight?

frankie80 · 07/10/2017 11:32

I'm hoping someone can reassure me that losing 4 to 5 stone is still do-able when I am such a picky eater and super busy with a full time job, university course and child?

I eat too much junk and I'm a really bad cook. Seriously, I don't even know what most labels mean and leave it to DH who works two jobs so it's mostly take outs or ready meals for us.

I hate all fish except haddock. I don't like pasta or pizza. I hate most veggies unless in soup and even then it's only some soups. (I bought two soup makers and neither of them worked even with instructions and asking on help on here so I can't even make fucking soup. I feel pretty useless)

I don't like much fruit, except apples, satsumas, strawberries and grapes.

I hate salads - there's no taste and I don't like seasonings/dressings.

No seeds or nuts (except peanuts). No cheese, quorn.

DH hates fish, eggs, nuts and anything with a visible bone.

I love chocolate, chips, chinese food, fast food basically

I can't get to a gym time wise so I keep saying I'll try the likes of the 30 day shred but then work, study, and entertaining DD just takes over.

My uni used my old student photo for my 'new' card. They said I didn't need to send a new photo because they already had one and I stupidly agreed only to get a card through with a young, skinny, pretty me. What will shops etc think when I'm requesting a discount? Who is this woman in this card? Has she stolen the card?

I have in the past, tried and failed at SW, nutricheck, cambridge, hypnotherapy, myfitnesspal also tried and failed at gyms, zumba, yoga, pilates, personal training, using fitbits.

I did lose 2 stone through WW about 3 years ago but then WW changed their diet and there was nothing I liked to eat.

Is there any way in which I can lose weight whilst not eating food I hate?

You need to prioritise yourself above all the things you mention as being so over weight and eating poorly will have a bad impact on your life. Wake up half an hour early and start 30 day shred and start eating properly you will have to get used to eating some of te food you don't like or stick to the fruit and lean meat you do like. No diet will work you need to change your life style take away is a treat not daily food.

frankie80 · 07/10/2017 12:17

I need to learn how to cook, that's the main thing. I wouldn't even know how to cook a stir fry. I'd definitely under/over cook. I have tried in the past but DH took over as I always got it wrong. I moved straight in with DH from my parents so I've always been 'looked after'.

DD has a healthier diet than both of us. She eats pizza, pasta, loves cucumber and carrots, cottage pie and is very energetic

Yes you can lose weight.Plenty of thin people eat badly. Being thin is not about eating healthily, you can be fat and eat healthily, it is about portion size.

teta · 07/10/2017 12:17

Are you two?

dontbesillyhenry · 07/10/2017 12:18

Teta highlights what I'm saying perfectly

RavingRoo · 07/10/2017 12:20

Weight loss is about will power. If you’re not ready you’re not ready. And don’t listen to people who enable you and say maybe you ‘can’t’ lose weight - everyone can if they eat fewer calories than they burn even with hypothyroid and pcos disorders.

paia · 07/10/2017 12:23

Yeah, you probably won't lose weight with your current approach.

Eating shouldn't simply be about what foods you love the taste of (so often, that winning combination of fat + carbs). Yes eating should be an overall pleasant experience but it's also about fuelling your body appropriately and ensuring good health. Loads of us might not love the taste of broccoli as much as we do chocolate, but eat the former more regularly than the latter anyway because it is good for us.

If you want to lose weight you need to stop being completely ruled by your tastebuds and habits, responsibility for your health and eat a lot less of what you love, and a lot more of what you might not delight in but can tolerate (veg, salads, fruit) etc. You might actually end up liking these things more in time.

Don't do any of the faddy diets, put them out of your mind. Slowly cut back on the junk/fast food, and over time, you'll begin to move away from it . Do you like potatoes, bread & crackers? You say you'll eat vegetables in a soup. As you don't seem confident with cooking, could you buy some of the supermarket fresher soups? These are like a main meal, but some of them can be fairly low in calories and fat. You could have a brown roll or bread with them as well. Do you eat cereal and drink milk? You could have big bowl of cereal for breakfast and a banana or apple mid morning? Have a filling brown bread sandwich and low fat crisps & a cup-a-soup for lunch. In the afternoon have another bowl of cereal or crackers with a little bit of butter. Then have your soup and bread in the evening or a baked potato with something that you really like. Get yourself some ice lollies for your pudding or have a little bit of choc. Don't deprive yourself of treats. I think you're someone who needs to know they don't have to suffer with a strict diet, just like me! I've lost weight by cutting back. I'm veggie and don't drink alcohol, but I love bread, choc and crisps, so I understand that it can be difficult. Start off slowly and don't be hard on yourself. Take the odd walk to begin with and see where it takes you. Good luck and take care of yourself.

LadyLoveYourWhat · 07/10/2017 12:29

Don't let your DH take over, it doesn't matter if you make mistakes, that's how we learn! You will get better. It took me a while to learn, even though both my parents were good cooks, they didn't teach me anything!

If you've got a wok a stir fry is easy, but it will work in a frying pan. You can see if things are getting overdone, take the pan off the heat. If the veg is underdone when you put the sauce on, put a lid on and turn the heat right down so that it cooks a bit more. You can do it!

BewareOfDragons · 07/10/2017 12:30

You have a child. Are you going to let them dictate a very, very narrow range of food choices for him/herself, because s/he doesn't 'like' them?

I seriously hope not.

YABU. Either stop with long, long ridiculous litany of 'I don't likes' and start eating more healthily OR accept that, no, you're not going to lose the weight you want to lose.

BarbarianMum · 07/10/2017 12:31

You will lose weight as soon as you start eating less calories than you burn. It doesn't matter (from a weight loss point of view) whether those calories are chips and chocolate.

It really is about willpower. And i say this as obese woman whose trying and failing to lose weight.

jaseyraex · 07/10/2017 12:31

I thoroughly recommend the Body Coach DVD as a starter for exercise. No gym or gym equipment required. The workouts vary in length but for the beginners workouts you're talking no more than half an hour for a warm up, work out and cool down. If you really want to do it, you will find the time.

Learning to cook is a must, start with simple things like pies and stir fry's and curries. You also do not need a soup maker! A good pot and hand blender does the job, will be the best way to get veggies in to you if you're fussy. Cut down your portion sizes, even when eating take always. You'll notice change slowly but surely is you control your portions and do a bit of excerise daily. But again, your head needs to be really in it for it to work.

teaandcakeat8 · 07/10/2017 12:34

You won't lose weight unless you change your attitude to exercise and food. Frankly a lot of us would rather not bother with keeping fit and eat junk, takeaways and snacks for every meal. But we don't because it's unhealthy, unnecessary and expensive.

teaandcakeat8 · 07/10/2017 12:36

Also if you do lose weight, start eating better and being active, the rewards you reap will be so much better than the benefits of convenience food. More energy, better body, being able to fit into smaller clothes, clear skin, healthier hair, fewer health issues are far better than the convenience of takeaways.

LadyLoveYourWhat · 07/10/2017 12:38

YouTube is great for learning

Jamie Oliver has a website for those wanting to learn to cook.

www.jamieshomecookingskills.com

Schmoopy · 07/10/2017 12:43

Tbh, you do need to change your attitude. That's what's getting in the way of losing weight.

Get a basic cookery book. Delia did one. Or one of the Jamie Oliver ones, there are some simple healthy recipes in the 15 minute meals book.

Not only that, it's ridiculous to say you only like haddock. It doesn't taste much different to cod or plaice. Smoked mackeral and mackeral, I can see, what about trout?

And as for not eating salad, what none of it? No leaves, even though they all taste different? No radishes, cucumber, tomatoes? Even thought the taste/appearance/texture of them is each very different?

It does sound a bit defeatest to just point blank say you don't like any of it!

It always amazes me that people who object to the taste and textures of most food have no trouble at all eating junk food, when the taste and texture of most of that is virtually inedible when you actually think about it!

Blahblahboo · 07/10/2017 12:44

I have to disagree with above . It would help if you cut back on the amount of bread and carbs you eat. While you can eat some you can't eat alot, so cut back on the bread, have a slightly smaller pile of mash and if you don't like pasta or rice then leave it out completely. Instead swap it with lots of fresh meat and fish ( no batter or breadcrumbs) and have lots of bacon, sausage, pork chops, chicken, eggs in all varieties, . Mushroom, etc.
I regularly have a huge grill with piles of food and I'm losing it steadily. Down a size already in only weeks.
Think natural fats and protein. No fat free food as they are full of sugar. Have all full fat foods and yoghurt. Greek yogurt is great for you.

RoomOfRequirement · 07/10/2017 12:45

dontbesillyhenry The reason you're not 'taken seriously' is that what you're saying is nonsense. There are SO many different 'tastes and textures' in ALL the different fruits and veg, let alone ALL the different ways to cook/prepare/add all the various fruit/veg to current meals. If you just say 'I don't like any' Id still find it hard to believe there isn't a SINGLE fruit/veg you don't like but it would make more sense than a blanket 'The texture is bad.

JennyOnAPlate · 07/10/2017 12:45

Well you could lose weight and still eat your diet of unhealthy food. You’d need to calorie count and eat a lot less of it though.

Or you could just learn to eat some fruit and veg. You must be really unhealthy.

Schmoopy · 07/10/2017 12:47

smoked mackeral and salmon I meant.

TheNaze73 · 07/10/2017 12:48

I think you’re right.

You’ve got to really want to do it & not just make excuses as to why you can’t

Blahblahboo · 07/10/2017 12:49

The best part of low carb is no calorie count, you can eat till your stuffed and as you won't be spiking your blood sugar you will remain full for a long time .
Eventually you will notice your appetite for sugary things like chocolate will go down as you will be adapted to burning body fat as fuel rather than sugar. For example I have some small low carb chocolate in the cupboard that im not wanting yet and haven't wanted in a week or so. I have instead replaced it with peanuts which are also very good for you on low carb

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 07/10/2017 12:52

If you're time poor then try high intensity interval training (HIIT). There are a lot of videos on YouTube and there is a Michael Mosely book, Fast Exercise, that explains it well. You basically do very high intensity exercise for 30 seconds at a time, with low intensity or rest breaks in between. It takes 10 to 15 mins a day, 3 or 4 days a week. Just think carefully about whether the exercise might cause injury, you do them at full pelt and you don't want to damage joints or ligaments. Some of the YouTube videos are aimed at people who are already fit, so try and find some for beginners.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 07/10/2017 12:54

Please do not do lipotrim.

Im fat, so Im not here to lecture you, but there is no substitute for actual food.

yawning801 · 07/10/2017 12:54

You say that you don't like salad because it tastes of nothing. What about a celery stick stuffed with peanut butter as a snack?

Also, what about drinking a pint or so of water before meals and giving yourself a smaller portion? Someone I know did this and it was very effective. Apologies if either of those have already been said.
