AIBU to wonder if no left turn can be enforced?

At my work's exit gate there is a "no left turn" sign - the road beyond that is a public road. They are trying to ensure the road doesn't become clogged up with traffic to the left when all the staff are leaving as there is a mini roundabout just past the left turn. I leave early most days so the road is never busy - can my work actually do anything about it if I don't adhere to the sign and turn left?

Odd. Surely turning right is what usually holds traffic up?!

Are you sure the employer put up the sign? Here private companies can't put up random road signs.

The OP said it's at the exit gate, so it could be on their own property.
If so the company could make it a condition of employment that employees obeyed their sign.

Yes, it's put up by my employer (big company, lots of employees). It's not a condition of employment. As I'm turning onto a public road I was thinking which way I go is not up to them!

I find turning right causes more issues as you have to wait for two lanes to be clear enough to pull out, turn left, and your only waiting for one.

It might be the company attempting to keep the public road flowing more smoothly, to stop masses of their workers turning left off the premises to do a u-turn at the mini roundabout (which is easier than trying to turn right out of a busy junction). They'd perhaps rather the queue backed up on their own property than on the road, to prevent annoying the public. There could well have been complaints or an approach from the council.

If they only want you turning left from that gate and they've got a reason for it (avoiding tension with local population or in response to council request) then yes they have the right to tell you which way you can turn when leaving their car park. If you don't like it then don't use their car park.

Whether they can legally enforce this is irrelevant. If you blatantly ignore it, they will deem you to bid some sort of arrogant idiot
