To be in tears thinking I will never get over this bug?

Have a bad stomach bug which originally caused severe stomach cramps and loss of appetite/nausea but then turned into diarrhea which I have now had for 9 days. Doctor just said to wait it out but although I feel a bit better and the time between each diorohea attack is lengthening, it is still there and worse in the early hours. I have it three or four times in the day which aren't that bad but in the night it is a different story and I have it 1-2 times really bad.
I have already taken a week off work and dread the thought of calling in for yet another week. Most people who get diorohea are over it in 5 days, I don't get why it is not the same for me. I really cannot live like this anymore wondering when it will decide to stop, it is pure hell :(

As soon as a stool sample came back positive, my GP rang me to say the prescription was at the surgery waiting for me! If it does turn out to be giardia, they're very hot on treating it properly and as quickly as possible, because it's highly contagious. (God only knows how I didn't pass it onto DS - must have been the industrial quantities of bleach I used on the toilet every time I went!)

Sienna333 · 09/10/2017 22:24

Giardia is yellow poo isn't it?

I am amazed DD hasn't caught it which makes me think it isn't contagious and therefore more serious

OP, I'm saying this with kindness but you need to stop trying to predict the outcome of everything. You're not the only person ever to have a bad bug that takes a while to go. Go back to the doctor if you are concerned but personally I wouldn't be unless it was over two weeks. Are you taking Dioralyte after every single BM? IF the same came back clear the doctor will have another suggestion.

Sienna333 · 09/10/2017 22:28

I know I just need to go back to the doctors but I can't get my mind off it :(

This happened to me

It was viral. Two weeks of bad illness (lost 20 lbs), then two more weeks for D to clear up. Small amounts of live culture yoghurt helped build back up the intestinal flora. Lots of D means you lose flora, which can lead to more D.

Where I am, the guidelines say up to 3 weeks of D can be normal for a viral stomach illness. Is it nice, no. Is it something to lose your mind with worry over, no again.

You are definitely overreacting and your anxiety is almost definitely making your D worse. But I think you won't be told. Hope you feel better soon x

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/10/2017 22:32

Lots of D means you lose flora, which can lead to more D

Yes,are you taking Dioralyte after EVERY BM?

funshine17 · 09/10/2017 22:38

Poor you! I hope you feel better soon. My only experience with extended bouts of D is when my Ds has d&v and then just D for ages! Turns out you can become temporarily lactose intolerant after stomach bugs. So if you are having any diary stop and reintroduce after a week or so. Good luck x

Sienna333 · 09/10/2017 22:57

Haven't touched any diary. I haven't been taking dioraylte after every bm as I am on and off the loo up to 10 times

OP posts:
DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/10/2017 23:00

But you need to take it properly, it may well slow the diarrhea down if you do.

TheCowWentMoo · 09/10/2017 23:33

Sienna I just had to accept I was ill and needed to rest tbh, I did a lot of frustrated crying and I was getting pretty desperate hence why I took the Imodium as I wouldn't usually take it if I had a stomach bug. Im a student so no work to worry about but had to write a graphic email to uni as they were getting cross with my attendance. I really should have gone to a Dr but didn't think I would make it. I just wanted to offer you some hope, it is possible to have a stomach bug for that time that you can get better from! Make sure you drink diarolyte and get some probiotics!

Sienna333 · 11/10/2017 07:39

Nearly 2 weeks and d seems worse then ever. Resigned myself to the fact it must be Crohns and had a sleepless/horrible night because of it. Sent stool sample in but I know in my heart this isn't normal and my life is going to centre around this illness and doctor/hospital visits now.

Terrified.

Op, you asked for an update, so after 12 days I've finally stopped having diarrhoea - must have been a horrible, long lasting, viral infection. My GP did say there were several such bugs doing the rounds. Still having cramps and a lot of wind, but my stomach/bowels were under pressure for so long that's to be expected.
I think it's a good thing you've got a stool sample in, and hopefully the results of that will give a clue as to what's happening for you.
You are very anxious and quick to worry about worst case scenario (Crohns, even if it is that, isn't the disaster you're thinking about) and I mean this with the utmost care and kindness, are you receiving help for your anxiety? It sounds as if it takes over sometimes. I've had MH problems, and anxiety was a big part of my diagnosed PND, so I understand the way it works, but I also know it's exhausting and not sustainable to always be 'on.' Plus it won't be helping your stomach issues. Might be worth looking in to once your physical health has improved? Flowers

Sienna333 · 11/10/2017 08:00

I am but it has taken a backseat to this at the moment. It just feels like there will never be an end to it. I am terrified of the days/months ahead and really don't know how I am going to cope.

OP posts:
DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/10/2017 08:01

Seriously, get a grip and stop being so dramatic, you know nothing if the sort. You are tired and anxious. Wait for the results and make an appt for a follow up with the GP.

Haveyoutriedturningitoffandon · 11/10/2017 08:02

Are you taking in enough fluids, including Dioralyte? I know it's tempting to stop drinking as it means your stomach cramps up, and then comes straight through, but becoming dehydrated will just give you a whole load of other problems. You're having diarrhoea anyway, so you may as well be as hydrated as you can be, and keep your kidneys etc healthy. Dehydration can lead to dizziness/fuzzy head too, and make you feel (even more) terrible, so it's worth trying to get the fluids in. Think of it as flushing out the bugs if that helps! Flowers

Haveyoutriedturningitoffandon · 11/10/2017 08:10

X post OP. That's good, and once you're feeling better physically you can concentrate on the anxiety again.
There's nothing you can do today about your worries for the future, so why not drink plenty, rest up, catch up on sleep, and wait to hear from the doctor? You'll be exhausted from not sleeping, and you need sleep to recover, just go for the one day at a time approach - it's out of your hands until you hear back from the GP anyway, so do what's best for you until then. If it's viral it will stop soon, if it's a bacterial infection it'll show up in your sample and you'll get treatment, and if it's a long term condition that will be managed too. Any outcome is covered, so don't waste today stressing out. (I do know that's not how anxiety works, but it's worth trying as there's nothing you can do today except self help measures)

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/10/2017 08:12

And yes, fluids including Dioralyte after EVER bm.

Chin up Brew

Sienna333 · 11/10/2017 08:17

I just don't know how I will cope if it is Chrones

OP posts:
DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/10/2017 08:19

There's no reason to think it is at the moment.

DingleBerries · 11/10/2017 08:25

My friends son has been recently diagnosed with Chrons.
He's ok.

I'm sorry to hear you're suffering so badly, my heart has been going out to you reading through your thread.

How long will it take to get the samples back? It's not very easy to diagnose Chrons is it?

Ollivander84 · 11/10/2017 11:53

There's no reason to think it is anything of the sort. I had norovirus that dragged on and instantly went down with flu after it
I do have a serious health condition, and used to have health anxiety. The reality wasn't as scary - and I no longer have health anxiety! I have to have bloods every 12 weeks and inject once a week and my life in no way revolves around doctors/hospital
If you're diagnosed with something, you just deal

BillyDaveysDaughter · 11/10/2017 12:01

Stop panicking, you don't know anything for sure yet. I had this for 9 weeks and lost 16lbs.

I had loads of time off, samples showed nothing, tests showed nothing, eventual sigmoidoscopy showed signs of a previous infection of some kind.

The suspicion was giardia (that won't always show itself in samples, unless you provide three consecutive ones) - I was given anti-parasitic medication but it improved on its own so I didn't take them.

That was this time last year, I've been fine ever since. Honestly, what seems life changing and dreadful to us at the time is often nothing much, medically speaking.

I know someone with crohns - if it was that (or ulcerative colitis, or diverticulitis), you'd know about it.

Sienna333 · 11/10/2017 12:11

Going back to the doctors yet again today, told them I can't deal with this any longer.

OP posts:
DingleBerries · 11/10/2017 12:19

What is it you want them today? Going in with an idea can help.

Dodie66 · 11/10/2017 12:32

Good luck. I hope you get some help x
