To be in tears thinking I will never get over this bug?

Have a bad stomach bug which originally caused severe stomach cramps and loss of appetite/nausea but then turned into diarrhea which I have now had for 9 days. Doctor just said to wait it out but although I feel a bit better and the time between each diorohea attack is lengthening, it is still there and worse in the early hours. I have it three or four times in the day which aren't that bad but in the night it is a different story and I have it 1-2 times really bad.
I have already taken a week off work and dread the thought of calling in for yet another week. Most people who get diorohea are over it in 5 days, I don't get why it is not the same for me. I really cannot live like this anymore wondering when it will decide to stop, it is pure hell :(

I meant the person who said it sounds like I have crohns. Now I really am terrified

I had similar lingering diarrhoea once. It was horrible but it ended eventually and I was fine very quickly afterwards. Try to see out of hours today if you can to put your mind at rest, but there's no need to assume you'll need another whole week off work. By Sunday evening it may well have eased off.

Sienna333 · 07/10/2017 11:36

Surely if I had crohns I would be vomiting, still have cramps and not only have bloody diorohea as a symptom?

Sienna333 · 07/10/2017 11:38

Youcanstayundermyumbrella How long did yours last and was it caused by a bug?

OP posts:
Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 07/10/2017 11:39

Yes, mine was a bug, and lasted a couple of weeks.

Sienna333 · 07/10/2017 11:46

What did the doctor do? (Sorry for all the questions)

OP posts:
PuppyMonkey · 07/10/2017 11:48

I honestly didn't mean to terrify you and I didn't say you have Crohn's - I said it could be something to ask the doctor about. Crohn's is not something to be terrified about, my brother lives a perfectly happy life now. But I'm not saying you have it, ask the doctor.

Sienna333 · 07/10/2017 11:49

I will go to the doctors again Monday, sure I will be just as bad then. I really do not see this stopping and am physically exhausted and drained.

OP posts:
Sienna333 · 07/10/2017 11:51

But Puppy, I am left with just the dirohoea. Surely there would be other symptoms? My stomach cramps have been and gone as has the sickness. If I had crohns surely there would be other signs other than just bad dirohoea.

Oh OP. I'm sorry you're having such a rotten time. I get anxiety too and it's always worse with lack of sleep and sickness. It's hard not to imagine worst case scenarios and start catastrophising.

I agree with the other posters who are saying to see a different GP next week. If they won't accommodate you, cry on the phone and say it's urgent. When you see the GP tell them about the blood and firmly request they take a stool sample. Lots of things can cause stomach issues but this does honestly sound like it's a nasty bug because of the way you've progressed through it - not something chronic.

It will get sorted out. I know it feels like it will be forever but it will end and you'll feel better again.

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 07/10/2017 11:59

I wouldn't have gone to the GP but I'd just got back from Egypt with friends, and one of them tested positive for a parasite and advised me to get tested too. My sample was clean and the GP just said it would ease with time. I didn't find it all as distressing you are, and I think checking for a parasitical cause would be sensible anyway.

Sienna333 · 07/10/2017 12:04

Thanks Presspaws. I will be on the phone crying Monday morning to the doctors if it makes them listen. I know the diarohoea won't be gone by then, it's just instinct. They need to do a stool sample and give me some antibiotics to clear it. I cannot be off work for a third week for this.

DS2 had something similar last winter - Normally bugs last a few days with our boys but this one wouldn't go away.

We ended up getting rid of his duvet and washing all of our bedding/sofa throws and pillowcases in the hottest wash in our machine and that honestly was the end of it.

It could have just been a coincidence but it may be worth a try?

Sienna333 · 07/10/2017 12:16

Just did that with my sisters help today Weebo. Not that there's any point as I will be stinking it all out by the end of the day but it's a nice thought to think it might solve it.

Weebo · 07/10/2017 12:26

Might be worth asking her to go out and grab you some of This also.

We sprayed it everywhere! :o From door handles to mattresses.

The good news is it just went away. He went to sleep still unwell and woke up the next morning better.

Fingers crossed for you.

Roomster101 · 07/10/2017 12:32

Hi, it probably is just a bug so try not to worry too much. I would see a different GP if it doesn't get better in a few days. In the mean time, have you taken loperamide or has this been recommended? If you do this you will be able to go back to work so at least you won't have to worry about losing your job.

Weebo · 07/10/2017 12:37

Careful, though - If it is a bug like Shigella taking loperamide will only make things worse.

Sienna333 · 07/10/2017 12:42

That's Immodium right?
It did nothing for me, just ran through me.

I am dying to go back to work, never thought I would say that but the thought of going out and leading a normal life makes me want to cry. It feels so far beyond my dreams right now as corny as that sounds.

Try not to panic. My dh and a friend have had these bugs in the past few weeks. My dh was vomiting. Went on for 5 days! Literally couldn't keep any food or water down. On the 5th day I made him see the gp as he was throwing up blood. Gp gave him anti sickness pills and they worked so he could keep fluids down. Said the blood would have been due to straining of the stomach and possibly from the throats and the fact there was nothing in his stomach to throw up. He took the anti sickness tablets for a couple of days but didn't eat anything just drank then started to eat small dry things. He's fine now.

My friend has the dirrohea. She's had it for just over a week now. I took her kids to school for her everyday last week as she was so weak. She's still got it now. Gp said same to her it can go on a while sometimes just wait it out.

Your anxiety will be playing hell with your tummy as well. Try and stay calm. Do something to take your mind off things. Try not to think about it. It's hard but the more you worry the more it will be there

SallySmiley · 07/10/2017 12:58

You can’t possibly know that it won’t be better by Monday. It may well not be but you sound disproportionately distressed.
While the doctor should do a stool sample and probably will, they may not give you antibiotics unless the stool sample shows a specific infection which responds to a specific antibiotic - otherwise they may well make it worse rather than better. If they don’t feel that from your history etc that you need them at the minute I would be cautious about insisting on them.

Sienna333 · 07/10/2017 13:06

So I am meant to just stay off work indefinitely then Sally? This NEEDS to go. I cannot spend another night up and down the stairs with this, I am exhausted. I don't think it is odd to be distressed over this for the length of time it has gone on.

Hannah, that is reassuring that it isn't just me and that there may be light at the end of the tunnel

Not RTFT but maybe you have Gastric Flu.

I had it a fortnight ago - nothing to do with what I ate. Cramps, nausea, no vomiting but lots of urgent diarrhoea. Mine lasted 6 days and my body was cramping terribly because I lost so much sodium. It was grim but has improved. I had a day or two of noisy stomach at the end and then it petered out. It's not nice but hang on in there.

SmartiesHaveTheAnswer · 07/10/2017 13:20

Actually, upon reading your updates and your anxiety, is there an out of hours service you can call? At the very least you'll have a medical
Professional to talk things through.

tiredybear · 07/10/2017 13:23

Go to out of hours, don't wait until Monday. Blood in your stool should not be ignored.

CockacidalManiac · 07/10/2017 13:35

No to loperamide, as someone said earlier.
Plenty of fluids and rehydration sachets.
I don’t think it’s helpful that people are suggesting all kinds of chronic conditions, it’s just causing the OP to catastrophise.
Yes to speaking to the GP at the start of the week.
Are you getting treatment for your anxiety?
