To give my toddler a bit of bread?

I imagine this has already been done to death, and would get the answer if I could be arsed to scroll...
At Waitrose the other day. Put a french bread stick in the trolley, which my toddler (2) saw, and started reaching for it. Told her no, to wait, but she is an untameable beast became upset. So..... I tore off the end and gave it to her BEFORE paying Shock One of the staff saw, and gave me a stinker of a look.

Now, my Mum used to do this with us. But, my Mum's understanding of social convention is.... interesting.
WIBU?!

I genuinely don't see the problem if you pay at the end.

It seems that most people's problem with it is that they just don't like it. There doesn't seem to be any logical reason why should be seen as wrong.

Jazzybeats · 04/10/2017 03:40

Ex supermarket manager here. YANBU. For it to count as theft you need to wilfully conceal the fact that you ate it AND leave the store. (Based on the retailer I worked for, 1 of the big supermarkets).

Better to avoid the screaming and let them eat bread I say!

Sayyouwill · 04/10/2017 04:39

@faithinthesound although I was on the other side of the fence, I like your post. A lot. It makes sense

faithinthesound · 04/10/2017 05:07

Oh wow, thanks! You don't often get that in internet back-and-forths, haha!

Cor!
Judgement people on here or what
It's a child eating a bit of bread
Totally not theft according to the law either
Those who are saying it's theft at least learn the law before you preach

I wouldn't in Waitrose. Judgemental fuckers.

TheNext · 04/10/2017 06:25

Gosh, if I’d been the member of staff I’d have tried to keep a poker face as I know there are people who see nothing wrong with this but inwardly I would be thinking it was hideously bad manners.

My children have often been awful or borderline awful in the supermarket at that age, but we never used food as a distraction tool as it’s not our culture to eat between meals, so they never expected to be fed while shopping.

strawberrisc · 04/10/2017 06:26

Strawberries I can reassure you I am just as much of a judgemental fucker in Lidl

Love these holier than thou mums. I do this all the time OP, no one had ever cared. You pay for it, it doesn't matter.

MistressPage · 04/10/2017 06:43

Of course it's fine OP. My toddler had half a packet of olives and a yoghurt in the supermarket yesterday. It helps keep them quiet while you get your shop done and causes no harm to anyone. Ignore the catsbum old miseries who reckon it's stealing. It really isn't.

PieOnEar · 04/10/2017 06:47

Nothing wrong with it as long as you pay for it.

Stop caring what others think of you. You'll forget about them in 1 or 2 mins and they'll no longer exist anymore.

popcornbag · 04/10/2017 06:54

I always feed my dd grapes while going round the supermarket. The supermarket doesn’t care so not sure why I should be bothered by anyone else.

popcornbag · 04/10/2017 06:54

NOT WEIGHED GRAPES
before anyone says anything Grin

I wouldn't in Waitrose. Judgemental fuckers.

It’s actually easy in Waitrose cos the self service till doesn’t have scales so you don’t have to get the staff over when you’ve eaten half a packet of whatever.
