to wonder if you can lose weight on Slimming World if you are only a little bit overweight?

I've had a few friends rave about Slimming World and it looks too good to be true. I am about 1 stone heavier than I'd like to be (my metabolism seems to have completely slowed down as I've got older).

Would SW be suitable for losing a stone? Does it really work?

Yes, it's just basic calorie counting. Save your money and just put yourself on a calorie controlled diet, based on your BMR and your activity level.

Yup, it'll work brilliantly first time around providing you stick to it very rigidly. Which you'll probably do because it's a different way of eating and a novelty. The weight will fall off. Then the novelty will wear off, you'll put it all back on again, and probably more, then the plan will never really work well again...

I think it's more geared more towards those with lots to lose.

I also think it's just easier to count calories at home (use MFP), save yourself the money and avoid the shitty, chemical-laden diet food products they promote.

It's working great for me, I was about a stone overweight and now I've lost 6lb in about 6 weeks.

TonicAndTonic · 03/10/2017 12:27

I found it worked for me at around a stone overweight, but was very slow at some points. I plateaued very easily on it. But I think that's the same for a lot of diet plans if you don't have loads to lose.

Wherearemymarbles · 03/10/2017 12:32

Just moderate your diet.
Say 2-3 days a week with no carbs in your main meal, smaller portion sizes etc.
If you eat them cut out snacks/crisps etc.

Thats the best away as if you keep it up you change the way you eat long term so the weight stays off. Too many diets try to change the way you eat to such an extent its not sustainable long term so bingo, the weight just goes back on again when the diet is over.
And yes your metabolic rates does fall quite a lot, especially from 40 onwards.

I signed up to lose 1 stone. Probably could have done it on my own but felt unneeded a helping hand. Lost 10lb in a month and didn't bother going back. I have since shifted the last few pounds on my own.

justme93 · 03/10/2017 12:38

Definitely give it a try, like you my weight slowly crept up.. I was still small but did need to shift some weight. I felt like a bit of a fraud when I went to the first meeting but stuck to the plan and it really did work wonders! I had more energy and the weight came off in 6 months I'd hit my target and was back in my size 8 jeans. I've maintained that weight now for nearly a year. My eating habits changed for good and I'd highly recommend slimming world to anyone looking to lose weight. Go for it!

I was trying on my own but failing totally. I only have a stone to lose and have lost 6.5lbs in 2 weeks. Basically you fill up on low calorie food like veg so eat a mixed diet but with a better balance of meals and limited treats. I was originally calorie counting but with 3 dc it's hard to be that disciplined. I'm only in week 3 but it's got me making better choices as I'd totally lost my way. I was a sceptic but so far so good. I know I've gone off plan at the weekend (we went away so I wasn't cooking) but hopefully I'll maintain this week.

I personally didn't find it helpful and I had similar to lose. SW and WW both work better if you have much more to lose, according to the evidence base for them.

I've found the 5:2 diet, and generally just trying to eat a bit less and move a bit more. Buying a fitbit and aiming for 10,000 steps a day has made the most difference, all be it slowly

TieGrr · 03/10/2017 13:04

I lost a stone on it at the start of the year and was within 5lbs of my target weight. Put most back on and am going back this week. It's not a magic diet plan but the extra support is necessary for me at the moment.

AhWoof · 03/10/2017 13:14

It will work for you but may take a while so as others have said, maybe save your money. I had 1.5 stones to lose on SW and used to do a '777' challenge to speed up weight loss - cut down to 7 syns per day (instead of 15), fill up on 7 varieties of speed food and drink 7 glasses of water. That worked well when near to target weight.
