To not want to go on holiday to blackpool

I think dh has lost his mind.

He reckons the dcs will love it?

There's such hideous snobbery towards Blackpool here. No other town comes in for such stick.

Maybe Bognor. Which I reserve the right to loathe - well the Butlins there anyway. Dirty, soulless, staff with minging habits.
Of course the kids loved it but we left a day early as we couldn't bear it anymore.
I second pp - stay somewhere nice and just do daytrips to Blackpool.

LapdanceShoeshine · 02/10/2017 23:40

and there's Nickelodeonland at the Pleasure Beach

Blackpool is brilliant for kids, yes it's run down, yes it's grubby and has been for a long time. There is just so much for kids though. Do you want something for you or your DC. I've lived and worked in both Blackpool and Whitby and it's Blackpool I choose to take my DC to (must go to illuminations at weekend)

Sassy306 · 02/10/2017 23:41

I'm going next week. We always stay at Haven Cala Gran but we book a private Caravan as we know what we are getting and it's a much better standard.

We usually go once a year and while I would prefer a week on the beach or lying by the pool if you ask my children where they want to go it's blackpool every time (and they have been to Disney land and Still say bpool). They just love it and say that it's magical at illumination time...so as long as they are happy we are happy.

I have never encountered drunk people but we don't tend to stay in the centre much after 7.30pm.
I love the lights and the markets and the trams and the rollercoasters are ace!

Give it a try, plan and book your days out online to save some cash. Keep an open mind...You might even enjoy it :)

Mintychoc1 · 02/10/2017 23:47

I took the kids a couple of years ago. We stayed in the premier inn on the edge of Blackpool - peaceful, quiet, residential. We saw the illuminations, went up the tower, went on a few rides, played football on the beach, went to a light museum (can't recall the name). It was great fun. Because it was winter and dark at 5pm, we could have our evenings out before the stag/hen parties appeared . The kids loved it.

KrytensNanobots · 03/10/2017 00:10

I had fun at Blackpool years ago but it was hell getting there (by train)

That all depends on where you're travelling from though, surely. It's on a great train route if you're in the North.
Straight through train route with no changes if you're coming from major stations such as York or Leeds.

superoz · 03/10/2017 00:15

YANBU.
I grew up not far from there, went for the day with the kids in the summer, which they loved but would not stay overnight. Lots of investment on the promenade, but go back a couple of streets and it's so neglected.
Also dh got short shrift from some stall holder, who made it as plain as day he wasn't the right demographic of customer he wanted to serve. That pretty much confirmed it was time to leave town!

NoqontroI · 03/10/2017 00:19

I went on holiday to Blackpool once. It was interesting. Don't think I'll go back. Ever.

Bahhhhhumbug · 03/10/2017 00:21

It's a toilet..........awful. LTB.

Mrskeats · 03/10/2017 00:39

I saw a dead body there. It was beyond grim.

sandgrown · 03/10/2017 00:53

I suspect that some of the posters on here have not been for years. Put your preconceptions aside and take a trip. Bring warm clothes , comfy shoes and lots of 2p pieces for the arcades! Book attractions in advance and save lots or look for vouchers on cereal packets etc. Check out trip advisor to find some excellent places to eat or eat fish and chips on the prom. If you want to stay away from the bustle stay in St Annes or Lytham and travel in. I think your children will have a ball .

oldlaundbooth · 03/10/2017 01:00

Once every five years is more than enough.

And that's for someone from Lancashire.

KrytensNanobots · 03/10/2017 01:01

Well, I can safely say that I went at the beginning of the year for a weekend with the two kids and we had a great time.
We saw no dead bodies Hmm stag or hen nights puking on our feet or into the gutter Hmm or anything like that.
I used to love going when I was little and wanted to re-visit as an adult and take my kids too and go on a nostalgia trip.
Granted, it was a little more run down than I remembered. From an adult's perspective, it's not shiny, it's seaside tack etc.
From a child's perspective, it's frickin' awesome and they won't see or care that the B and B's you pass could do with a lick of paint.
Go expecting seaside fun and that's what you'll get and come away with.
It's not like you're going to see drunks staggering around puking in the middle of the afternoon/teatime anyway as you've got kids and you're hardly going to be off on an evening bar crawl or whatever with them.
I can only presume that those who apparently saw puking in the gutters/at their feet etc were out in the evening as we saw none of that as did the sights and fun in the daytime and were back in the hotel by early evening.

Glastokitty · 03/10/2017 01:02

Ferrier I worked as a waitress in Bognor Butlins for a season many many years ago, and can confirm the staff were a pretty feral lot. Most of the security staff were off their faces on bottles of night nurse or whatever else they could get their hands on, and the bed hopping in the staff accom was legendary. I was fresh out of uni and had never seen the like! Grin. It was a bloody good summer, but I wouldn't go there for a holiday in a million years. Same for Blackpool, although a day trip would be fine, I have very fond memories of the Pleasure beach and the Tower.

TattyCat · 03/10/2017 01:03

I saw a dead body there. It was beyond grim.

I saw a dead body too, but it wasn't in Blackpool. Shit happens, even in the 'loveliest town in England'...

KrytensNanobots · 03/10/2017 01:03

I suspect that some of the posters on here have not been for years.

I was wondering that as it looked freshly done up and smart all along the seafront when we went at the beginning of the year.

RoryItsSnowing · 03/10/2017 01:41

Can't think of much worse!

Topseyt · 03/10/2017 02:09

I took a day trip there 30 years ago. Didn't like it. It was grim and run down. I really couldn't understand the hype.

Of course, it may have changed a fair bit in the meantime, but doesn't attract me. I wouldn't spend an entire holiday there. Stay elsewhere and just go in for a few hours.

MrsOverTheRoad · 03/10/2017 02:18

I've never understood the whole "what's there for the children?" thing.

Or people booking breaks soley because "there's loads for the kids to do."

Can't they play on the sand? Explore a castle? Visit the shops and have an icecream?

Any pleasant coastal town is good for all that in the UK!

I wouldn't go to Blackpool either OP....full of stag and hen parties!

Frillyhorseyknickers · 03/10/2017 02:27

Put your preconceptions aside and take a trip. Bring warm clothes , comfy shoes and lots of 2p pieces for the arcades!

Why the fuck would I want to do any of those things, they're not what I want from a holiday.

Blackpool is a hole, on par with Skegness. It's not a holiday, more of a custodial sentence. LTB.

Bubblebubblepop · 03/10/2017 02:52

"we book a private Caravan as we know what we are getting and it's a much better standard"

Hold up: sassy are you saying the alternative is... a shared caravan?!?!? 😱😱

BadLad · 03/10/2017 03:06

I went there for a stag party a few years ago.

I was amused to see that one of the small hotels, advertising their faclilities on signs in the windows, was displaying the following:

TVs in all rooms
Full breakfast
Tea and coffee in all rooms
Keys to all rooms
Late checkout available.

Keys to all rooms! Fuck me, what luxury.

safariboot · 03/10/2017 04:02

I've been to the area several times and enjoyed it greatly. Normally staying at the Cala Gran Haven up towards Fleetwood, because it's cheap. No shortage of stuff to do. One day I'll be at the Pleasure Beach (a must for any thrill ride fan), another day I'll be walking along the Wyre Estuary without another soul in sight.

Yes, the nightlife spots are probably rowdy at night. That's the same in any town. I imagine you won't be taking little ones out to bars in the evening.

Day tripping it, well, maybe if you live nearby. Even from Birmingham it's a bit far for that, trains is 3 hours each way and car just as bad unless you're very lucky with traffic.

Bubblebubblepop, no ... the alternative is a caravan owned by Haven.

greentea4me · 03/10/2017 05:07

Margate is the trendy place to go at the moment. Absolutely heaving with Londoners!

DameGlitterSparkles · 03/10/2017 07:13

If I didn't have sentimental connections to Blackpool I'd never go back again 😂😂
