Cant be fucked with going to the hairdressers (the only profession I'm aware of where it's acceptable to charge money for insults- "gosh your hair is so fine/dry/damaged on repeat despite me knowing that).

AIBU to fuck them off and do my own hair?

Should i straighten my hair before I get chopping?

Depends how much you like your hair is guess?
There's a YouTube video that demonstrates how to cut your own hair.

00100001 · 01/10/2017 16:48

I cut my own hair. Do the pony tail thing. Easy peasy.

It cost me the price of a good pair of hair scissors, have done it for about 5 years now.

KimGordonsKinkyBoots · 01/10/2017 16:50

Yeah why not cut your own hair with the bacon scissors. It's what my mum did in the 80s. Hope you like having a shit fringe that looks like a small rodent has chewed it.

ChangedToday · 01/10/2017 16:51

I do get a professional haircut on a regular basis but do trim my fringe in between and it's fine. Start with small cuts to see how it looks. And use proper hairdressing scissors. And watch how your hairdresser does it .
If you're not happy with your current HDs attitude, try to find another one who is more diplomatic?

YouCantArgueWithStupid · 01/10/2017 16:52

I think YABU. My hairdresser doesn’t talk to me like that! You should find another one

gosh your hair is so fine/dry/damaged on repeat despite me knowing that).

Maybe so they can make suggestions as to what to do?

Yep, go ahead. Why should people be properly trained to do such an easy job?

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 01/10/2017 16:58

Find a better hairdresser.

BobTheGoldfish · 01/10/2017 17:03

I cut my own hair as I don't like going to the hairdresser and don't have the time. I'm also tight and dislike spending money unless essential. I've never found a hairdresser rude though and I have crap condition hair.

It would probably look better with a professional cut but not much as it's wavy and I can rarely be bothered to spend time styling it. Very easy to do a basic cut, but do use hair scissors as pp say.

snowballkitty · 01/10/2017 17:06

I cut my own hair. I figure every 2-3 years I'll pay for a 'professional' to fix it then be horrifically upset with said hairdresser who didn't give me the cut I wanted and regret the whole rigamarole completely

KungFuPandaWorksOut16 · 01/10/2017 17:08

Go for it if you want.

Not as easy as it looks.

tissuesosoft · 01/10/2017 17:08

Mumsnet haircut! Link here

PandorasXbox · 01/10/2017 17:09

Yeah do it. Then find a decent hairdresser to rectify your cock up Wink

ladyratterley · 01/10/2017 17:10

I've cut my own hair for the past year. I got sick of hairdressers telling me how thin and fine it is, like I don't know that already!
Mine is pretty much all one length with a bit of shaping around my face. It honestly looks no different to when I used to pay to get it cut.
Invest in some proper sharp hairdressing scissors and look online for a couple of tutorials.

Ekphrasis · 01/10/2017 17:11

I've recently started cutting my own hair! Found a tutorial on YouTube.

allertse · 01/10/2017 17:11

swoopy side fringe is easy to cut. I watched a hairdresser do it once and did it myself for years after.

Tie all your hair back except the hair you want in the fringe. pull it over to the opposite side of your face, hold it below your ear, cut straight across. brush it back to the other side, job's a goodun. Make sure you don't cut it too short though - I'd start a good few inches below your earlobe and then go shorter if you want.

Eolian · 01/10/2017 17:11

I let dh cut my hair the other day Shock. I won't let him near the dc's hair because theirs is short and needs a proper cut. But mine is fine, dead straight and shoulder length and just needed half an inch trimmed off the bottom. I almost always trimmed my own fringe between haurcurs when I used to have a fringe. Not sure how I'd trim the back of my own hair though. Confused

Dahlietta · 01/10/2017 17:16

I've been cutting my own hair for years. Nobody seems to notice - in fact they usually say, "Oh, have you had your hair cut? It looks great!" Somebody spent quite some time telling me I looked French the other day Confused. However, if I ever tell somebody that I cut my own hair, they tell me that I am insane. I tie it back in a pony tail and then cut the pony tail off. I do the fringe as pp described. Then I make DH go round the back and snip off any locks that aren't the right length. Easy peasy!

KanielOutis · 01/10/2017 18:16

I cut my own hair, chopping off the pony tail. Chin length bob. I get nothing but compliments every time I do it. My hair is curly so I guess it doesn't matter if it's a bit wonky.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/10/2017 18:19

Can we have before and after pics?!

RoganJosh · 01/10/2017 18:22

I do my own mostly. I have some sharp (£7) hairdresser scissors that I got in boots.

I'd watch a video and remember that wet hair stretches. Do not cut your fringe when wet as it will jump up loads when it dries. Apparently. Grin

TheHungryDonkey · 01/10/2017 18:39

I've always cut my own hair. I don't have money for hairdressers. In about twenty years of doing so I've only had two oh fuck moments. It grew back.

Coulddowithanap · 01/10/2017 18:40

I cut my own hair, been doing it for years and no one has ever mentioned it looks odd (I have very honest sisters who would tell me if it did!)

I have all one length hair though, not sure I would attempt a fringe. There will be loads of guides on YouTube so have a watch before having a go. And get some proper hair scissors.

Arrowfanatic · 01/10/2017 18:43

I always cut my own hair, have neither the time nor the finances to pay someone to do it every few weeks. I use the ponytail method and get loads of compliments on my haircut.
