To trim my own hair and cut myself a side fringe?

Cant be fucked with going to the hairdressers (the only profession I'm aware of where it's acceptable to charge money for insults- "gosh your hair is so fine/dry/damaged on repeat despite me knowing that).

AIBU to fuck them off and do my own hair?

Should i straighten my hair before I get chopping?

I've done mine a few times usually after having a baby and not having time to get to a hair salon. It's quite easy but I tie my hair back and up so it's not noticeable if it's not staight

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 01/10/2017 20:49

I cut my own side fringe in once and it was my favourite fringe I've ever had (tend to grow it out then cut it back in often). I've cut my hair before and it's gone awfully wrong though.

KanielOutis · 01/10/2017 22:56

Totally outing but here's my DIY haircut.

To trim my own hair and cut myself a side fringe?
DeadMorose · 01/10/2017 23:09

I’m cutting my own hair too. Last time actual hairdresser cut my hair, it looked like a mushroom. Now I do mumsnet haircut and trim my own fringe.
My fringe is straight and I always dry and straightening it before cutting. Never had it wonky, always looks perfect.

On Friday I also did my first ombré on my hair and it looks amazing.

Hawkmoth · 01/10/2017 23:15

Oh yes I cut my own hair because I got nits off the bloody children and I couldn't get the comb through it. It looked ace.

I don't have nits anymore.

noeffingidea · 01/10/2017 23:20

Another one who cuts their own hair. I'm perfectly happy with the results, and have never felt the need to go to the hairdressers to have it sorted out.
There are plenty of tutorials on youtube to choose from. I would watch quite a few before you do anything. Some of them are a bit shit, some of them look amazing.
I got some hair cutting scissors from superdrug, I think they cost a fiver. Money well spent.

LellyMcKelly · 01/10/2017 23:32

I've cut my own hair for years after I moved cities and couldn't get another hairdresser to do it the way I liked it. It is long, very thick, and wavy though, so any disasters are well hidden. I tie a tight ponytail at the very front of my head, another one a couple of inches along, chop off what's beyond the second pony tail, remove the band and take deep snips into the hair remaining beyond the first pony tail. Takes 10 minutes and hardly anyone ever notices that it's been cut!

DuffRose · 01/10/2017 23:32

Another vote for the mumsnet haircut, been doing it for four years now, as fed up with mushroom haircut from different stylists

AllToadsLeadToHome · 02/10/2017 00:32

I have been cutting my own hair for years. I was sick of finding one side longer than the other, bits missed, not getting what I asked for, and that was in several London salons that were meant to be 'top' ones. Whenever I did find a good stylist they would leave, or the colourist would leave and I didn't fancy going to 2 different salons. Plus there was the sniggering and bitching going on that they didn't manage to hide, sometimes about the clients, sometimes about their colleagues. The same conversations, holidays, Christmas etc. and the rudeness. Some of them think they don't need to be polite.

Not all of them are like that, obviously, but when you have had the same one for years, who knows how to do your hair, and doesn't talk about holidays, then they die it isn't easy to find the right person again.

So, I decided not to waste any more money on mediocre cuts, and do my own, at least that way I can do it how I want.

AllToadsLeadToHome · 02/10/2017 00:37

You can buy tiny rubber/silicon bands to section it off if you are doing a shorter cut/bob. Some videos say to straighten first. It depends on your hair. I don't straighten and have a wave which I sometimes emphasise and sometimes dry straight.

oldlaundbooth · 02/10/2017 01:03

I cut my fringe all the time.

Haircut every other year.

UsernameInvalid66 · 03/10/2017 19:34

I think it's a great idea. I do it all the time although I have a proper fringe, not a side fringe. Hairdressers never cut enough layers in and don't listen when I say I want my hair dried as curly as possible. My hair is potentially as curly as kaniel 's pic above but hairdressers won't let me have it like that for some reason.

pigsknickers · 03/10/2017 19:39

Been cutting my own hair for years, including fringe and layers all round. It's fun once you get over the fear!

Blahblahboo · 03/10/2017 19:40

I wouldn't. I only ever use hairdressers because I like my hair in layers ( it's curly so it helps with the thickness)

Tanfastic · 03/10/2017 19:46

I've been cutting my own hair since my hairdresser went on maternity leave.

I think it looks all right! Grin

NameChanger22 · 03/10/2017 19:46

I cut and colour my own hair, I've been doing it for years. It looks better when I do it myself. The hairdressers charge far too much (£30 for 15 minutes work - I don't think so, hairdressers are not brain surgeons).

My hair looks as good as it can look. Random strangers tell me they like it. It is too fine and dry, but nothing a hairdresser has ever done has changed that.

Buy good scissors. Buy good hair dye i.e. salon quality dye and peroxide, gloves etc. Then get some tips from YouTube.

formerbabe · 03/10/2017 19:47

I cut my own hair. I hate going to the hairdressers. Look at some tutorials online first. I straighten my hair when I do it. Make sure you use proper hair dressing scissors.

greentea4me · 03/10/2017 19:52

KanielOutis lovely.

MikeUniformMike · 03/10/2017 19:52

If you cut it, cut with confidence. Don't cut it short as you might need to tidy it later.
Don't cut a fringe straight across but chip into it.
Alternative it to grow your hair long with no fringe.
Off to check the mumsnet haircut.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 03/10/2017 19:55

My tips:

-Don't cut it wet. Although hairdressers do, it's far easier to cut it dry and you're less likely to make a mistake.

-Go out and buy some hairdressing scissors. They don't have to expensive but it's important they're sharp.

-Set up two mirrors so you can see all angles

And please post us a picture of your finished cut and we'll critique. Smile

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 03/10/2017 19:59

Mumsnet haircut..

  1. Brush your hair into a pony tail on top of your head
  1. Hold the ponytail up vertically with one hand
  1. Cut the end off the ponytail, moving scissors horizontally, aiming to cut a couple of inches off.
  1. Let your hair down to admire the layers
  1. Cry
ghostyslovesheets · 03/10/2017 20:01
  1. Go to an actual hairdresser!
MikeUniformMike · 03/10/2017 20:08

Ok. Watched the clips. Go to a proper decent hairdresser. you wear your hair 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 03/10/2017 20:19

Kaniel you've done a good job there. I think some people just have a good eye for cutting hair and a flair for it.

It's no good cutting it on a whim though. You need to think what you're doing, look at some videos, plan how you want it to look and cut it before you drink a bottle of wine. I've tried drunk cutting and wouldn't advise.

Orangebird69 · 03/10/2017 20:20

That mumsnet haircut is fucking awful. Truly.
