To think that no one would notice if I spent £50 on a wedding dress...

All the wedding dresses I have seen that I really love are quite overbudget as I'm looking for something a little bit 'alternative' when compared with the traditional princess-y style. IABU to some extent because I could probably afford to pay over the £500 budget I have set myself. But I also think that it's a huge amount of money to spend on something that I will definitely only wear once (I'm not by any means a dressy girl) and I don't feel like being extravagant would be a very good representation of DP and I as a couple.

I've just been looking at alternatives on Asos and have seen a couple of things I like in the £50 region. AIBU to think that no one would notice if I got something really cheap as long as it fitted nicely? Do you think budget wedding dresses can look just as good?

Ohhh following!! I am engaged and am keen to not spend too much on a big fancy dress!!
I think if you are happy then you shouldn’t think twice about it!
As we are learning there is a lot to compromise on planning a wedding so surely one thing you do not need to compromise on is the dress!
Congrats! And good luck!

I also feel bad about mine being hidden away never to be worn again. Really not sure I want to sell it though, though I'm sure I could get at least £800 for it.

There are two charities online. One where you can donate your dress to be made into burial clothes for a baby and one where you can donate the dress to girls in Africa.

I bought a pattern I liked and then found a dressmaker. Total cost was about £80 and it was the dress I definitely wanted.

My DF was paying and was very happy as the dress I'd first wanted was £1,600. Lovely dress, bit the more I looked at it the more I thought it was a lot of money for a dress that wasn't perfect.

£50 for a dress then another £50 to get it properly fitted would be money well spent.

No one will care how much your dress cost. A few weeks after the wedding most people won't even remember what it looked like. Not because they don't care but because it's only really important to the bride. Most people will just think on the day 'oh she looks lovely' then forget about it.

My friend got her wedding dress from "not on the high street". She was after a sparkly 20's affair.
She loved Jenny Peckham but not the price tag. Anyway she ended up wearing this:

She looked gorgeous

Thank you madamejosephine and stripeysleeves I’m super excited to wear it. Just need to find a birdcage veil that I like and doesn’t cost a bloody fortune.

JennyBlueWren · 01/10/2017 11:28

Feel like I overspent now! £70 1950s vintage lace dress from USA on the internet. Spent another £20 on adjustments.

If anything spending less made me feel better and had more money to spend on other things.

MagicFajita · 01/10/2017 13:40

Not rtft but have you looked at Lindy Bop wedding dresses? They have some in a similar style to chichi dresses.

MagicFajita · 01/10/2017 13:43

Also , have a look at dig for victory , their dresses cost more than chichi ones but they have an interesting range if your want something different.

OllyBJolly · 01/10/2017 13:44

Mine was £90 from eBay and stunning (if I say so myself!). Spent £30 on alterations.

A wedding is a sum of all the parts and a dress is only a small part. When I remember weddings I remember how happy the couple look, the good company, and seeing families together.

milliemolliemou · 01/10/2017 19:11

Yes to birdcage veils! Are you near a hatter? You can get one made v precisely in a range of nets for under £30 ......

And as any fule no, it's not the cost of the dress it's the pleasure it gives the wearer and her groom and the enjoyment of the wedding itself. Agree with PP who said £50 on a dress and £50 on fitting is money well spent.

gunsandbanjos · 01/10/2017 20:03

I went to a wedding shop and they wanted £200 for a birdcage veil!

Need to look elsewhere.

Eemamc · 01/10/2017 20:20

Mine was £67 from ASOS I loved it, no regrets!

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 03/10/2017 16:33

I was surprised at how flimsy commercial birdcage veils were so I made my own. It looked great. It cost approx £1 for hairband, £6 for a diamanté brooch from eBay and £4 for netting. Took maybe an hour of fiddling/sewing. Wasn't too difficult but v satisfying to have DIY'd. My sister used the netting I bought in another colour to make a birdcage veil for her wedding the year after.

It seems a bit reckless but my mum cut the veil to shape over my face on the morning of the wedding once it was in place and my hair was done. I can't remember if we'd always planned that or if it was tickling me.

butterfly56 · 03/10/2017 16:42

I bought 2 dresses...well actually beaded bodice and skirt(£35) and a dress sort of empire line with long chiffon sleeves(£20) both off Ebay! Neither had been worn!
I wore the bodice and skirt for the church and the other one for the evening!

gunsandbanjos · 03/10/2017 17:03

I’ve bought a cheap birdcage from eBay, I’ll be wearing it for maybe an hour or two. Will get something pretty for my hair too.

Frouby · 03/10/2017 17:25

Am following with interest. We want a cheap wedding next year. Am not really a frock person and really don't want to spend more than £100 on an outfit that will be worn once.

Love the chichi dresses.
