To think that no one would notice if I spent £50 on a wedding dress...

All the wedding dresses I have seen that I really love are quite overbudget as I'm looking for something a little bit 'alternative' when compared with the traditional princess-y style. IABU to some extent because I could probably afford to pay over the £500 budget I have set myself. But I also think that it's a huge amount of money to spend on something that I will definitely only wear once (I'm not by any means a dressy girl) and I don't feel like being extravagant would be a very good representation of DP and I as a couple.

I've just been looking at alternatives on Asos and have seen a couple of things I like in the £50 region. AIBU to think that no one would notice if I got something really cheap as long as it fitted nicely? Do you think budget wedding dresses can look just as good?

My dress was £13.95 in the sale. I loved it and everyone said they couldn't imagine a dress that was more "me". No one cares about the price. As long as you're happy and confident wearing it it will look £££££££££

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 30/09/2017 21:43

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g Makes sense; I have unfortunately seen people with that opinion.

TurquoiseTranquility · 30/09/2017 21:45

YANBU, the price tag has nothing to do with the occasion. As long as it looks good on, who cares what you spent on it. Just like the price of your wedding ring has nothing to do with its value. It's the thought that counts, right? ;-)
I made my wedding dress, it was 3 layers of pure silk and cost me less than £100 with all the trims. Wedding rings were palladium (we both hate gold, didn't think silver would last, and couldn't afford platinum), think they came up to around £90 each.
There are plenty of people who wed on a shoestring and live happily ever after Grin
In ye olde days, the bride would just wear the best dress she owned. Or one her extended family owned even.

Kintan · 30/09/2017 21:45

Mine was £49 in the Coast sale. If you've found something you can imagine yourself happily getting married in, then who cares how much it cost :)

AnneEyhtMeyer · 30/09/2017 21:54

Honestly, no one cares how much you spend on your dress - buy whatever you want and feel happy in.

TBH I have never seen the appeal of spending a fortune on a wedding dress as I think they are all very samey and indistinguishable, but if you want to spend your money on one then that is your decision. Personally I would go for the cheapest option.

LaughingElliot · 30/09/2017 21:56

Oh I would so admire a bride who had the sense to do this! Bodes well for your marriage too. Do it!!

TurquoiseTranquility · 30/09/2017 22:03

Not wishing to ruffle anyone's feathers, but I think wedding dresses have turned into a uniform. When people ask "what colour is your wedding dress" meaning shades of white/cream, I just think, what's the blinking difference.
I always admire a bride who's picked something that has an actual colour.

Toomanypackingboxes · 30/09/2017 22:04

I had a fragile vintage dress for the day, (about 600 pounds) and in the evening a John Lewis in the sale bodice and skirt that I think we're about 85 pounds, I felt great in both of them. 12 years later I have never once thought if only I had spent more on my wedding dresses.

TurquoiseTranquility · 30/09/2017 22:09

slightly off on a tangent, but my mum's dress was a fairly plain, pink, empire waist gown, one you could wear for a multitude of occasions (I later wore it for a school ball). My dad had two good shirts in his wardrobe - one pink, one orange. He wore the orange one, just to piss her off (or so she says ;-) ) Just as well the photos are black-and-white! Grin

Chewbecca · 30/09/2017 22:10

The bride wore a dress she bought from a charity shop the day before at the most recent wedding I went to. She looked radiant and amazing.

NataliaOsipova · 30/09/2017 22:16

You're the bride. People will say you look lovely. You will look lovely. Whatever you wear. And, to be honest, I suspect that most (by which I mean the majority - both men and women) wouldn't be able to guess accurately what you'd spent on the outfit. Wear what you like and enjoy your day! Congratulations.

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 30/09/2017 22:20

There was a ChiChi one and an Asos Petite one that don't seem to exist anymore!

If this was long, I'd snap it up in seconds:

I'm looking for something backless or low back, fitted across the hips and ideally in a chunky lace like crochet, battenburg, broderie anglaise or similar.

Yes. My dress was from same Asos for £43 (sale, originally ~£70) and it was beautiful.

MrsLettuce · 30/09/2017 22:23

Mango. No lace but lovely

MrsLettuce · 30/09/2017 22:25

not backless and marmite. I love it.

Danceswithwarthogs · 30/09/2017 22:28

Mine was £60 on eBay bnwt (apparently vendor had bought two and rejected this one) label said £500.

lozzylizzy · 30/09/2017 22:29

If you look happy then the dress is second fiddle

NotAgainYoda · 30/09/2017 22:30

You don't get married as a show to other people. Or have I got that wrong?

rightnowimpissed · 30/09/2017 22:32

Yanbu mine was in a bridal shop closing sale and I had it altered to fit and remove sleeves, total cost £100 and no one was any the wiser on its cast because it was the big full skirt princess style.

TBH if people are taking about the price of your dress they aren’t the people you want there are they

lionsleepstonight · 30/09/2017 22:36

My 1k dress is now rammed in a carrier bag and has been since I wore it. What do you do with them afterwards! I wish I'd spent £50 now!

MrsLettuce · 30/09/2017 22:36

Might this have been the chi chi one? they have so many that it's hard to guess!

Mumof41987 · 30/09/2017 22:40

It's personal choice . My wedding dress cost £2250 and then my veil was £550 but I felt like a princess . It was what I'd dreamed of and for me was my one and only indulgence . If you love a dress then Whatever price you should go for it . You only get married once ( well you hope to)

ShirleyPhallus · 30/09/2017 22:40

Christ. Threads about weddings ALWAYS descend in to competitive non-spending

"Oh yes, I got married on a budget of £8. All my guests got given a dry crust of bread and a glass of tap water. I wore a bin bag and frankly anything spent above this is a waste of money. We married for love not for show."

Suze1621 · 30/09/2017 22:41

My daughter recently got married in a beautiful Chi Chi dress which cost less than £40 direct from Chi Chi - definitely worth a look
